In a case of art imitating life, The Neighborhood’s creative team has taken a big moment from Marcel Spears’ (Marty) life and has written it into the May 6 episode. The actor’s wife, actress Sarah Francis Jones, gave birth to the couple’s daughter Nola Renai Spears while at a Beyoncé concert in Los Angeles last September. In the season finale of The Neighborhood, titled “Welcome to the World,” Marty and his girlfriend Courtney, his parents, Calvin (Cedric the Entertainer) and Tina (Tichina Arnold), and their neighbors, Dave (Max Greenfield) and Gemma (Beth Behrs), attend a Toni Braxton concert. Before she can belt out “Un-Break My Heart,” the tearful ballad many bawled their eyes out to back in the 1990s over failed relationships, Courtney’s water breaks and she goes into labor – just as Jones’s had. Below, Arnold previews the big episode. The family gets a little bigger...

As reported by Deadline, Townsend is set for a recurring role in Season 6 of the hit CBS comedy series. It’s late March and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and star Robin Thede is working with the show’s editors to put the finishing touches on Season 4 of the half-hour HBO comedy.
“First season,” she tells Variety, “I was like, I want every third line to be a joke. Second season, every other line. Now, literally every line is a joke, even the setups to the punchlines. It’s crazy.”

Even when the subject matter has nothing to do with Blackness, the show’s existence is impactful, a sentiment Whoopi Goldberg underlined during a recent episode of “The View.”

It’s time to break out the good hair and sip on some celebratory champagne because HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show has returned for its fourth season tonight. Keeping in theme with the series’ previous seasons, creator and star Robin Thede, alongside her mainstay cast members Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend, continues to highlight the niche inner workings of the Black American community through absurdist humor and topical commentary. Season 4 ushers in three series newcomers, TikTok personality DaMya Gurley, The Voice star Tamara Jade, actress Angel Laketa Moore along with a special bevy of guest stars including Jackée Harry, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Colman Domingo, who suffers a hilariously awkward interview with fan-favorite character Dr. Hadassah Olayinka Ali-Youngman Pre-PhD.
Here, Thede spoke to Deadline about the importance of creating Black female comedy, collaborating with her new cast and guest stars, and how she manages to maintain the funny.

Robin Thede designed A Black Lady Sketch Show to have no end. “That is my original vision for the show,” she tells TV Insider ahead of the April 14 Season 4 premiere on HBO, “that the show can be an institution and a launching platform for so many talented Black women to come through and to be able to show the world everything they’ve got.” That talent is on full display in A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 4, which features returning stars Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend. This is the first season without star Ashley Nicole Black, but three new cast members — DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, and Angel Laketa Moore — join the hilarious crew in her stead. Thede serves as an executive producer, showrunner, and writer in addition to being a star and creator. “Teamwork is the key” to keeping the magic flowing in their writers’ room and beyond. “I’m constantly moving.

Robin Thede, creator and star of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” has set a new comedy series for development at HBO.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” created by Robin Thede with fellow actors Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black and Skye Townsend is certainly an improvisational, production-heavy, comic masterpiece. But who knew that it was in the business of making history?
Last year for Season 2, editor Stephanie Filo made history as part of the first-ever, all women-of-color editing team to win an Emmy. Now, in 2022, for its third season, the editing team of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” — Filo, Taylor Mason, Bradinn French, Robyn Wilson — are the first all-Black editing team to be nominated for an Emmy.
Of this achievement, each editor is proud.
“For all of us, what’s important is representation,” says Filo. “’Black Lady Sketch Show’ proves what it means when you prioritize inclusion. Robin is efficient at finding diverse teams behind, and before, the camera.”
French, who worked with Filo in the editing room for Lifetime’s “Surviving R Kelly,...

Season 2 of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” ended up being a mix of emotions for series creator and star Robin Thede. Covid safety protocols made production more difficult and one cast member from Season 1 could not come back, but the multi-hyphenate found safety in being able to produce a comedy series in troubled times. “We were feeling so much of the sadness for the year that was going on,” says Thede in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. “It was really bittersweet in that way to have a year that was so hard for so many people but to know that we were making something that was going to end up being such a source of joy.” Watch the video interview above.
