The struggle to keep movie theaters alive gets very personal in “Showdown at the Grand,” an enjoyable tribute to retro exploitation pictures with Terrance Howard as a movie palace proprietor besieged by diminishing receipts and violent goons. Dolph Lundgren plays the former action star who shows up for a personal appearance, then stays to help save the joint from those agents of unscrupulous developers. More low-key homage than campy cartoon, writer-director Orson Oblowitz’s fourth feature does manage to deliver some tongue-in-cheek mayhem in an extended climax.

"Stay away from my friends, my theater, and my neighborhood." Shout has debuted the official trailer for an indie action comedy titled Showdown at the Grand, from filmmaker Orson Oblowitz. This trailer has been out for a few weeks, but we're just catching up with it – looks like some harmless fun. It's an 80s action movie homage with a big battle at a vintage cinema. A proud movie theater owner honors action star turned recluse "Claude Luc Hallyday" with a retrospective of his illustrious career but when real estate developers show up to ruin the party, the two new friends must fight off corporate greed in the name of art. Showdown stars Terrence Howard, John Savage, Amanda Righetti, Piper Curda, and Swedish badass Dolph Lundgren as Claude Luc Hallyday. Looks like an entertaining tribute to movies they don't make anymore, and the way theaters used to be. Though it's also fairly cheesy & cliche,...

Speaking to the press after a screening of May December, Todd Haynes identified himself primarily as an interpreter, both of cinematic forms of the past and of the pre-existing material from which his work is often adapted. That characterization certainly tracks through his filmography, from metacinematic homages to kaleidoscopic renderings of pop idols to his contemporary readings on midcentury fiction.
Loosely based on the ’90s tabloid scandal of Mary Kay Letourneau, who at age 35 served a prison sentence for rape when her sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy was made public, May December is perhaps the slipperiest entry in that interpretive project to date. Written by Samy Burch, the film examines real-world events through the lens of mass media with a wry humor that masks profoundly complex and painful undercurrents of emotion.

The official trailer for Todd Haynes’ upcoming film, May December, explores a twisted personal drama, reminiscent of the real-life scandal between former teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau.
The film stars Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Berry, an actress who travels to Maine to spend time with the real-life character she’ll be portraying in an upcoming film, a disgraced former teacher who made tabloid headlines for her relationship with a young teen student.
Julianne Moore plays the teacher, Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who has since married and had kids with the now-grown student, Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), having given birth to one of their children while she was imprisoned for her crimes against the then-minor.

This post contains spoilers for The Flash series finale.
The Flash has always been about hope, even when things look darkest. And for fans of the Arrowverse, it’s hard to imagine anything darker than the series finale. Not only is the official Arrowverse coming to a close with the end of The Flash, but even other superhero shows on the CW face an uncertain future, with Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights facing potential cancelation. And yet, during the final episode of The Flash, hope arrived in the form of a lightning bolt.
As expected, the final episode built to a showdown between Flash Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Cobalt Blue (Rick Cosnett). But the really exciting part of the show came in its final seconds, when Barry told a story to his and Iris’s (Candice Patton) newborn daughter Nora, herself destined to become super-speedster Xs (Jessica Parker Kennedy...

“The Flash” has officially crossed the finish line on The CW and with it, the Arrowverse has officially come to an end. So, how exactly did the show wrap up its nine seasons and an entire on-screen universe?
Well, the good news is pretty much everyone got their happy ending. But before we can get to the ending, let’s start at the beginning.
As promised, Tom Cavanaugh indeed returned for the series finale of “The Flash,” and pretty early too. Eobard Thawne was not the only major villain from Barry’s (Grant Gustin) past that returned though. Savitar made an appearance too, along with Karan Oberoi’s Godspeed and a few others.

Variety has a first look at the anticipated Cannes Film Festival competition premiere “May December,” led by Oscar-winning heavyweights Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and directed by Todd Haynes.
The title, which is also for sale out of this year’s Marché du Film, represents a “Far From Heaven” reunion for Moore and Haynes and a significant breakout opportunity for “Riverdale” heartthrob Charles Melton.
Moore and Melton star as married couple whose 20-year relationship inspired a national tabloid obsession at its offset. Now preparing to send their grown children off to college – as Melton reconciles with empty nest syndrome in his mid-30s – an actress (Portman) embeds with the family to study them for an upcoming film where she’ll play Moore. Saying goodbye to Legacies is not going to be easy.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 19 perfectly highlighted that there's still a lot of life left in the series.
It's just unfortunate that we've been waiting all this time to see any form of stakes.
The Vampire Diaries and The Originals killed off characters as the shows deemed necessary, but Legacies has predominantly found loopholes to keep everyone safe.
In some aspects, the message of the series is that good will prevail, but sometimes, there are war casualties, and allowing big characters to die isn't something the series should be shying away from.
We'll start with Aurora. If you watch Legacies online, you know the broader aspect of her arc has been coming to terms with the past.
Whether that involves killing the Tribrid or realizing there's more to life than being filled with hate, it's all been part of her journey.

It’s hard to believe that American Pie arrived over twenty years ago as it seems like just yesterday that we were all listening to wild band camp stories and getting hilarious advice from Jim’s awkward father. Over two decades later, the iconic R-rated comedy has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and inspired tons of other comedies, but as of yet, we’re still left waiting for a proper American Pie 5.
Whether or not the fifth installment ever happens remains to be seen, of course, but in the meantime, the brand is continuing to pump out spinoffs and the latest is American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. As you can see in the trailer up above, it’s not exactly the new outing that fans may be hoping for, but it’s still the first entry in the franchise in quite a long time and looks to be following...

2020 has not been an easy year on cinemagoers, in fact it has been the worst since some of the earlier days of the medium. Still, despite the disappointed sighs that have grown among audiences when hearing another much anticipated film has been delayed further, there has been some plucky films that have thrived at this time of panic. Many of these films have been ones which have solely enjoyed huge VOD success but Brett and Drew T. Pierce’s (known and credited collectively as The Pierce Brothers) horror film The Wretched, is a film which has indeed hit VOD but also cinemas, doing particularly well at select drive-ins Stateside, as it topped the box office six weekends running. The first since Avatar to do so (obviously with wildly different box office takings). And little wonder too, because The Wretched is a film perfect for a drive-in experience and a brilliant throwback horror flick.

In her 4.5-star Fantasia review, Sara Clements wrote that The Wretched is "one of the year's best scares," and if you missed it in drive-in theaters, then you can soon bring the witch next-door to your own neighborhood, as IFC Midnight will release the film on Blu-ray and DVD beginning August 11th.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, The Wretched stars John-Paul Howard (Hell or High Water), Piper Curda (I Didn’t Do It), Azie Tesfai (Supergirl), and Kevin Bigley (Netflix’s Upload).

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

A film by the brothers Pierce (Bret and Drew), The Wretched is a horror flick about a teenage kid named Ben who goes to battle with an ancient witch who is living beneath the skin of the woman next door. That’s the summary, the plot synopsis, the nut-shell on the back of the VHS cover (well erm… the press release) but there’s much more to The Wretched than that.
Ben (John-Paul Howard) is struggling with dealing with his parents’ divorce, and is staying with his Dad in a seaside town for the summer. Their relationship is strained and Ben is doing his best to mingle with the locals in order to get...
