"Moonrise Kingdom" was the film that made me fall in love with Wes Anderson's work. It's not that I disliked his earlier stuff; ironically, one of his least well-received films, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," was also the one that started turning me onto his movies in the first place. Yet, it was 2012's "Moonrise Kingdom" that solidified me as a Fanderson or Westie or whatever you call those who can't get enough of the quirky cineaste's funny, melancholic, meticulously curated art.
The movie centers on a pair of eccentric 12-year-olds -- orphan and devoted Khaki Scout Sam (Jared Gilman) and rebellious Suzy (Kara Hayward) -- who develop a romantic attraction to one another and, feeling alienated from the rest of their community on the small fictional island of New Penzance, conspire to run away together. Meanwhile, the adults in their lives scramble to bring them home, yet...

Wes Anderson has once again recruited Jason Schwartzman for another one of his films. Over the past two decades, the pair have worked together several times, including on "Rushmore," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," and "Moonrise Kingdom." Now, Schwartzman is the star of Anderson's latest theatrical release, "Asteroid City," which premiered on June 16. The period film, which takes place during the 1950s, follows a group of gifted students and their parents who visit a desert town for the annual Junior Stargazer convention. During their stay, they experience a mysterious cosmic event together.
Schwartzman plays a war photographer named Augie Steenbeck, whose son, Woodrow (Jake Ryan), is a Junior Stargazer winner. Also making up the cast are Scarlett Johansson as actor Midge Campbell; Tom Hanks as Augie's father-in-law, Stanley Zak; Jeffrey Wright as the convention's host, General Grif Gibson; and Tilda Swinton as scientist Dr. Hickenlooper.

In May, Prime Video will return to the world of live awards shows as it again broadcasts the Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11. The major event will be hosted by country-music superstars Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. The 58th ACM Awards will stream live from The Star in Frisco, Texas. One of the benefits of an awards show on a streaming service is that it doesn’t run commercials. If Prime Video continues the tradition it started last year, the ACMs will utilize the entire venue to keep the action moving throughout the show.
Coming to the streaming service in May is Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” a charming, stylized coming-of-age adventure about two offbeat 12-year-olds (played by Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman) who find solace in each other. Their touching romance is a potent reminder that love comes at all ages — and adults have much to learn from children.

From Zeph in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Frank Castle in The Punisher to David Drayton in The Mist (based on the Stephen King novella of the same name) and Baxley in The Predator, Thomas Jane is no stranger to bringing compelling characters to life on screen in multiple genres. His role in the recent horror comedy Slayers is certainly no exception, as he plays Elliot Jones, a modern vampire hunter who lives in an Rv, researches bloodsucker conspiracy theories, and eventually teams up with video game influencer Flynn (Kara Hayward) to help take down a nefarious vampire empire.
With Slayers now on Digital and On Demand, we recently caught up with Thomas Jane to discuss acting in and executive producing the new vampire movie, and he also reflected on filming his memorable fight scene with Kevin Nash in The Punisher and being a part of the gut-punch ending of The Mist.

I was lucky enough to chat with both Thomas Jane and Malin Akerman about their upcoming Vampire comedy, Slayers. In this day and age, vampire stories have been told time and time again and rarely do they have any kind of originality. Thankfully, Slayers has a new take on them that makes the rules around them much more interesting. Then there’s Thomas Jane’s Elliot Jones character who may just be my favorite vampire hunter of the last decade and we’ve got the recipe for a fun time at the movies. So join me for my fun conversation with the two actors where we dive into the film.

The recent release of television shows like Let the Right One In and Interview with the Vampire, as well as movies like Day Shift and The Invitation, prove that stories about vampires will always be in style. Our obsession with social media like Instagram and TikTok has made it possible for almost anyone with a camera and a platform to become a celebrity, so Influencer culture is also very much in style right now. When you take a group of influencers and force them to battle a vampire syndicate, you have the recipe for a modern horror comedy.
Written by Zack Imbrogno (The Shadow Diaries) and K. Asher Levin, and directed by Levin, Slayers tells the story of a self-proclaimed vampire hunter named Elliot Jones, played by Thomas Jane, who teams up with a clueless, spoiled group of YouTube celebrities who are being targeted by what Elliot describes as the vampire illuminati.

Plot: A vampire slayer targets billionaire bloodsuckers who have lured a group of social media influencers to their remote compound.
Review: Just one month after the theatrical and VOD release of the thriller Dig, which was directed by K. Asher Levin and starred Thomas Jane, we’re getting the theatrical and VOD release of another Levin / Jane collaboration… and this one is quite different from their previous one. The new(er) movie is a horror comedy called Slayers, which finds Jane taking on the role of experienced vampire slayer Elliot Jones. The narration from Jones informs us that vampires have existed since the dawn of time – and humans have been secretly warring against them for thousands of centuries. While Jones has been in the slayer game for a couple decades at this point, he’s just one of the latest slayers in a long line of them, including some major historical figures.

"It's vamp time." The Avenue has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled Slayers, yet another vampire hunters film out this year (to go along with Day Shift and V for Vengeance). In the indie horror comedy film, a kick ass vampire slayer is out to avenge his daughter, killed viciously by a vampire, and must team up with a superstar influencer content house called 'The Street Team' that will help him take his revenge before the vamp scum can take their necks and bodies. This is a tame red band trailer but they say: "Warning! Not for the faint of heart of those who faint at the sight of blood." This vampire slayers film stars Thomas Jane, Kara Hayward, Jack Donnelly, Lydia Hearst, Malin Akerman, Abigail Breslin. It all looks like a mashup of streaming keywords and every bad idea from the worst movies nowadays thrown into a basket of forgettable vampire fun.

Cynthia Erivo vividly understands the double standard that women tend to face in life — especially in their work. And she brought that understanding to her role in the upcoming Apple TV+ anthology series “Roar.”
In her episode of the series, Erivo plays a working mom who nearly dies giving birth to her second child. And throughout the rest of the episode, she juggles recovering from a traumatic childbirth, returning to work, and maintaining her relationship with her husband — all while also caring for her newborn son and young daughter.
“I think that more than anything, this sort of story expresses the experience of many mothers who have to deal with being mothers and working really high octane jobs and trying to navigate all of that experience at once,” she told TheWrap. “I think a lot of us are made to feel guilty when we can’t quite manage the whole thing at once.

The worst part of “Roar” is also its most consistent. While every episode of Apple’s new anthology show tackles an entirely different story with a different cast to match, they each open with a neon graphic of a woman’s mouth screaming out of a blooming flower. With this image, “Roar” underlines its logline as a feminist scream of a series that, as based on Ceceila Ahern’s book of short stories, explores “what it means to be a woman today.” Watching its trailer, which leans heavily on wackier moments like Nicole Kidman shoving photographs down her throat, you’d be excused for assuming it’s an exaggerated comedy of girlboss errors. Watching the actual show, though, makes for a bit of a more scattered experience.

"What's the reason for returning your husband?" Apple has unveiled an official trailer for new streaming series called Roar, a narrative series coming to Apple TV+ this April. Featuring an all-star cast, this genre-bending anthology series weaves together eight darkly comedic feminist fables that each take unexpected approaches to topics including gender roles, autonomy, and identity. Roar stars Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Issa Rae, Merritt Wever, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal, Fivel Stewart, and Kara Hayward. "How they emerge from their respective journeys speaks to the resiliency that exists within themselves, and with all women." The description is a bit vague because each of the eight episodes will tell a different story, each unique, about women and "what it means to be a woman today." The trailer introduces each of them and the stories - it looks way better than it sounds. Give the trailer a watch to get a better idea.

Some times a film comes along that you expect very little from but ends up being so much more than you expected and Drunk Bus is exactly that. it must have something to it based on its synopsis alone because I get a choice of many films to review each week and for whatever reason Drunk Bus just stuck out to me. I’m glad I chose to watch it.
The film follows Michael a young campus bus driver who drives the late night ‘drunk bus’ every night. When he gets security for his bus in the form of a huge Samoan guy named Pineapple they form an unlikely kinship and both start trying to enjoy life.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on the new film “Drunk Bus,” an indie about an aimless bus driver in a college town, and his unlikely friendship with a man named Pineapple, currently in select theaters and through Video On Demand.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Charlie Tahan is Michael, an aimless bus driver in a college town, assigned to the route with the most bars, thus the “drunk bus.” He has dropped out of that college, lost his girlfriend and is constantly being harassed by his wasted riders. When a fight occurs on the bus, his boss assigns a bodyguard named Pineapple, portrayed by Pineapple Tangaroa. The pair become unlikely friends, teaching each other the life lessons they need to break free.

It’s no secret that social media has left an indelible mark on the world. Whether it’s more of a positive or a negative mark depends on who you are and how you view its impact. The new documentary, The Social Dilemma, certainly is of the opinion that it’s doing major damage to the world, and in particular, to the youth of the world. In fact, it’s probably more of a fact than an opinion. However, while the Netflix release does make this case, it does so in a rather frustrating and puzzling manner that robs it of most of its effectiveness. Now available on the streaming giant, it’s intriguing, but an ultimately disappointing experience. The documentary is an unusual mix of investigative journalism, expose, and also narrative drama. The subject matter is, of course, the reliance on social media that people of all walks of...

In Oklahoma in 1960, 18 year old Maggie (Liana Liberato) moves from the city to a sparsely populated rural town. On her first day, she defends and becomes friends with class outcast Iris (Kara Hayward). The film chronicles the ups and downs of their friendship.
To The Stars had an unusual production, with director Martha Stephens and cinematographer Andrew Reed shooting for colour and black and white at the same time, with Stephens using a monitor that allowed her to switch between viewing the two different formats. This must have been a huge challenge for the production, necessitating clever choices with both lighting and colour palette to ensure that the film looked right, as if it was intended to be seen in this form, whichever version you watch. To celebrate the release of the acclaimed new drama To The Stars, which is released this week on streaming services, we spoke to the two leads of the film to find out more.
Based in a small town in Oklahoma in the 1960s, the film tells the story of the friendship between the reserved Iris (Kara Hayward) and the reckless, worldly Maggie (Liana Liberato) and how they begin to influence each other lives in profound and unexpected ways. But the film touches on more than just the two ladies and their new bonds, as it delves into such themes as class, race, sexuality, repression, all of which were reasons – amongst others – for both actresses to want to tell this story.
Directed by Martha Stephens (Land Ho!), the film co-stars Tony Hale (Veep), Shea Whigham (Mission: Impossible 7), Jordana Spiro (Ozark), Lucas Jade Zissman (20th Century Women), Tina Parker (Breaking Bad...

In a small town, everything is a big deal, and with the intense social conformity of early Sixties Oklahoma to deal with as well, life is tough for young Iris (Kara Hayward). She's mocked because she has poor bladder control, which is probably itself the result of bullying, and a long walk to school down an open road makes her an easy target for the sort of aggression that kids know all too well but adults routinely refuse to take seriously: jeering, shoving, kicking her books around, making sexual threats. The situation feel so hopeless that she doesn't even try to fight back - until one day new girl Maggie (Liana Liberato) drives up and starts throwing stones, and everything changes.
A sweet albeit rather slight tale about the liberating power of friendship, To The Stars explores the growing connection between its young heroines whilst highlighting some of the social issues.

A shy Oklahoma girl has her life transformed by a charismatic newcomer in this comfortingly formulaic coming-of-age drama
It’s the beginning of the 1960s in small-town Oklahoma: dress silhouettes oscillate between the flare of the 50s new look and hipper pencil-skirt sleekness, gossip runs rife and minds are, with a few noble exceptions, pretty small. Iris, a shy, speccy, secretly smart high-school senior with a humiliating bladder-control problem, lives with her alcoholic mom (Jordana Spiro) and taciturn dad (Shea Whigham).
One day during the long walk to school, Iris is saved from the local jocks’ daily dose of bullying by newcomer Maggie (Liana Liberato). With her sensuous physicality and imaginative mind, Maggie bamboozles the local popular girls with a semi-credible line of Bs about her father being a magazine photojournalist in town for a story about rural poverty, when really the family moved there to escape some vague scandal...
