Jason Statham is a franchise unto himself. He tends to more or less play the same growly-voiced butt-kicking macho man over and over with superficial differences, like how his titular super-spy in "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" enjoys a fine wine. Or how his personal driver, Frank Martin, in "The Transporter" films is meticulous about keeping his suits clean and neatly pressed. You always know exactly what to expect from his films and there's a comfort in that. They embody the type of "Action Movies Your Dad Watches" that were the bread and butter of networks like TNT and TBS in the pre-streaming age of cable.

In its biggest single showcase, Visions du Réel staged a three-hour showcase on Saturday where directors and producers delivered online presentations of nine doc features in post. Some will undoubtedly hit major festivals in the months to come. Following, bare bones profiles of the nine Wip titles:
“About Everything There Is to Know,” dir: Sofía Velázquez (Peru)
Produced by Carolina Denegri (Cultural Mercado Central)
A group of filmmakers arrive in Santiago de Chuco, a remote village perched high in the Peruvian Andes which was the birthplace of Cesar Vallejo, the most revolutionary of Latin American poets. Their casting for a play, inspired by Vallejo characters, provides the doc feature’s storyline. It also allows Velazquez to depict the village inhabitants and a mix of
“fantasy and reality” that builds as an equal part celebration of Vallejo and more nuanced portrait of Peru, where village life is rapidly eclipsed by emigration to nearby big cities.

How do you rank perfection? Duncan has a go, as he lists the top 25 Jason Statham films...
For regular Den Of Geek readers, it will come as little surprise to see this list come round. We've chosen our favourite Statham films before, but such is the productivity of the great man, it was decided that a mere top ten was no longer large enough to contain his ever growing body of work. Last time I mentioned updating this piece to the man himself back in 2012 due to his insane workload, he cracked up and responded, “My productivity is overwhelming! 'Have a fucking day off!'”
Since this list has now expanded to encompass 25 of his movies, it seemed only right to include multiple sequels, with his big trio of action franchises all spawning some thoroughly entertaining fare worthy of mention, though I’ve tried to exclude the personal bias that...

Ex-government agent Luke Wright (Jason Statham) cuts a bruising swathe through corrupt New York cops, vicious Chinese triads and psychopathic Russian mobsters in one night. They are all after one thing - 10-year-old maths prodigy Mei (Catherine Chan) - but only The Stath has her bests interests at heart. Bone-crunching rucks and whip-smart one liners distinguish this above average thriller with Statham never better as a morally-driven killing machine.

Action superstar Jason Statham teams up with director Boaz Yakin for Safe, which follows a beat up and broken down ex-cop as he protects a young girl from the Russians, Triads and corrupt cops. Safe might look like your average Statham B-movie on paper, but the result is actually an entertaining action flick that contains expertly shot action sequences and enough blood and violence to keep anyone entertained from start to finish.
Luke Wright (Jason Statham) used to be one of the finest New York City cops once upon a time, but something happened and he now participates in mixed martial arts fights in New Jersey. His former police partners have abandoned him and because of certain situations his wife was killed, leaving him with nothing and no one. He really doesn’t care about his life anymore and just when he’s about to end it all he finds a reason to continue living.

Chicago – Not to be confused with Todd Haynes’s 1995 masterpiece featuring Julianne Moore in the performance of her career, “Safe” is a forgettable would-be blockbuster that puts star Jason Statham through the emotional wringer in order to justify a marathon of repetitive carnage. This is as predictable a star vehicle as one could imagine, yet the direction by Boaz Yakin is so strong that it nearly saves the material.
A sense of palpable tension pervades all 92 minutes of this fast-paced thriller and doesn’t end after the final fade-out. It seems like everyone in New York is conspiring to take down the film’s two protagonists: a former detective (Statham) and a pint-sized Chinese prodigy (Catherine Chan) kidnapped by thugs intent on exploiting her extraordinary math skills. The first half-hour of the picture is so oppressively doom-laden that it leads the audience to cheer on the bloodletting once it finally arrives.

British hard man Jason Statham takes you on an ass-kicking, adrenaline-fuelled roller coaster in the box-office hit Safe, released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on 10 September by Momentum Pictures.
We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away to our readers.
From director Boaz Yakin (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) and the producers of Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds, Jason Statham (The Expendables, The Mechanic, The Transporter) once again dominates the screen as an all-out action hero along with a strong support cast including Chris Sarandon, (Fright Night, The Princess Bride) and James Hong (Bladerunner, Big Trouble in Little China).
When disillusioned ex-government agent Luke Wright (Statham) exposes the Russian mafia for rigging illegal fights, he is forced into a life of destitution and obscurity after they murder his wife and threaten to kill anyone close to him.

★★★☆☆ Jason Statham (aka 'the Stath') returns to the action fold with Safe (2012), a mostly by-the-numbers, yet surprisingly involving and dynamic thriller from writer/director Boaz Yakin. The film centres on Statham's Luke Wright, an ex-cop who, after stumbling upon a prized 12-year-old Chinese girl called Mei (Catherine Chan), finds himself caught up in a three-way gangland conflict. All the while, Wright begins slowly but surely falling into his old ways of life - one suffused with crime, violence and self-destruction.

Stars: Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, Anson Mount, James Hong | Written and Directed by Boaz Yakin
In a break with tradition, Jason Statham plays a tough nut who has to fight his way to justice in an enjoyable action film. I jest of course. Statham has well and truly carved out a niche for himself as the go to guy for bald-headed action brutality now that Bruce Willis is just about past it (except for in the ‘too old for this shit’ sub-genre in the action – see Surrogates, The Expendables, etc).
So long as The Stathe keeps churning out slightly by the numbers beat ‘em ups, I’ll be happy to keep watching them. The biggest draw in any Jason Statham film is the man’s undeniable charisma. It’s difficult to think of any other action hero who is so universally well-liked (around my office,...

In every action hero’s career, there will come a time when they dip their toes in more dramatic waters in favour of ripping people’s throats out.
Van Damme did it with Nowhere to Run back in 1993, Stallone started as a dramatic actor before Rambo and then went back to the drama with Over the Top in 87 and Copland in 1997. Bruce Willis once he established himself in the genre with Die Hard couldn’t wait to get back to dramatic acting. So now we come to Jason Statham who after ten years of kicking arse has decided to unleash his inner turmoil, but Safe isn’t actually a drama, it’s an action movie through and through and although it’s a massively flawed movie it does give us Jason Statham’s best performance so far and with an American accent too!

Depressing though it might be to action fans, there is only one truly bankable tough guy left who can prop up his own picture, and that man is Jason Statham. Thankfully, teaming with eclectic director Boaz Yakin – whose CV ranges from inspirational sports film (Remember the Titans) to cutesy comedy (Uptown Girls) – proved a wise choice, for Safe is one of The Stath’s more solidly entertaining vehicles for quite some time.
Shake the fact that the plot is shamelessly similar to Bruce Willis’ mediocre action thriller Mercury Rising, and there is plenty to enjoy here. Statham plays Luke Wright, a suicidal former NYPD cop who saves a 12-year old Chinese math whizz, Mei (Catherine Chan), whose gift for remembering numbers is being exploited to help the Triads’ bank roll. After rescuing her, Wright then has to fend off not only the Triads, but the Russian...

American Pie: Reunion (15)
(Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, 2012, Us) Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Alyson Hannigan. 113 mins
It's rare to see teen-movie characters all grown up, and this illustrates the reason why: they just make us feel old. The gang's all here, reverting to their old non-pc habits even as they mourn their lost youth. It's patchy and often dodgy comedy, but there's still something heartening about Stifler's defiant idiocy and Jim's dad's middle-age second chance.
Safe (15)
(Boaz Yakin, 2012, Us) Jason Statham, Catherine Chan. 94 mins
Triads, Russian mobsters, cops and everyone else in New York falls foul of Statham in another ludicrous but fast-moving actioner.
Two Years At Sea (U)
(Ben Rivers, 2012, UK) Jake Williams. 90 mins
Extraordinary, otherworldly observation of a modern-day Scottish hermit.
Goodbye First Love (15)
(Mia Hansen-Løve, 2011, Fra/Ger) Lola Créton, Sebastian Urzendowsky. 111 mins
Heartfelt study of a young teen's formative romantic fortunes.

To celebrate the presence of Safe in UK cinemas, here’s an updated list of action hero Jason Statham’s very best films to date…
2011 was without doubt Jason Statham’s best year so far. He managed a grand total of four cinematic releases, though at one point that total was nearer six, until 13 seemed to vanish without a trace and Safe was sensibly pushed back to 2012, thus avoiding an overload of machismo greater than the average human could cope with.
As a result of his insane productivity, our long-standing list of his greatest movies so far needed an update, an event that will hopefully need to be done annually, as he continues to be one of the most productive actors working today.
Statham’s still sensibly chosen to concentrate on making action movies and thrillers all squarely aimed at an adult audience, providing a constant and much-needed fix for someone as bloodthirsty as me,...

British bulldog Jason Statham always manages to beguile you on screen with his seemingly boundless choreographed energy and corny one-line growls that have become his reliable trademarks. Without such qualities of seasoned action veterans like Schwarzenegger and Stallone in their heyday, the Statham flick would be dead in the water, like an action flick of a bygone era.
Paradoxically, there is also a very fresh and contemporary feel to a Statham film too, in its video-gaming context that combines style and a breakneck editing pace that often defies reality. Writer-director Boaz Yakin’s Safe is in this category, as The Transformer energy is unleashed on the Big Apple, it keeps you gunning for Statham from beginning to end, however farcical and far-fetched the bits are in between, and comical his ‘American’ accent gets.

Jason Statham has cracked the art of giving an action performance with a heart
Jason Statham hits things. This time in New York, where he's a broken ex-cop helping a young girl (Catherine Chan) who's memorised the code for a safe that two rival gangs and the rottenest apples in NYC's police department are desperate to open. The Stath punches his way through the problem, but for once – between the explosions and Statham's "Brook-lahn" accent – there's space for emotion. Our man's Leon-like interactions with his protectee semi-justify the carnage. It's tough delivering an action performance with heart. Statham's cracked it.

Jason Statham returns with his usual great blend of action-thriller in Safe, due out in UK cinemas this weekend.
Statham has been brilliant in turning his tough-guy image into a career built on no-nonsense characters who do whatever they have to to get the job done, and it looks like Safe will be another in that vein.
A new action-packed clip has surfaced online, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, to give you an idea of what to expect.
“A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change… until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched,...

New 'Safe' movie delivered great hardcore action, violence, drama & more. Lionsgate released their new extreme action flick "Safe" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was totally awesome. Jason Statham always delivers on the intense, extreme action. This movie served up a ton of guns blazing, fists flying action over some money and an important disk. It stars: Jason Statham, Robert John Burke, Chris Sarandon, Anson Mount, and Catherine Chan. In the new flick, character Luke Wright (Jason Statham) is making a living by throwing mixed martial arts fights. However, one day,he accidentally wins one, causing the Russian mob to lose a boatload of money. To punish him, they murder his family, and banish him from his life forever by threatening to kill anyone he develops a relationship with. From this point,Luke wanders the streets, and almost considers ending his life...

Produced by Judd Apatow, The Five-Year Engagement took in a paltry $3.5 million at 2,936 locations on Friday, landing at no. 3 behind Tim Story / Michael Ealy’s Think Like a Man ($5.5m) and Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling’s The Lucky One ($3.91m). The Apatow comedy is expected to reach at most $11.5 million by Sunday, whereas Box Office Mojo had predicted an opening in the low 20s. Jason Statham movie: Safe Think Like a Man, inspired by TV/radio comedian Steve Harvey’s bestselling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, will apparently remain at the top of the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend. That’s less because of Think Like a Man’s ladylike staying power than because of the weak performance of this weekend’s four new entries. The romantic comedy, which many reviewers found simple-minded and cliche-ridden, opened impressively last weekend, but it has gone steadily downhill this past week. In fact, Think Like a Man’s Thursday take was 32% below the film’s gross on Monday. For comparison’s sake, the Zac Efron romantic drama The Lucky One was down 3%. As per Deadline.com, Think Like a Man is expected to collect $5.2 million on Friday, for a weekend total of $17.5 million — down 52% compared to last weekend. Directed...

Chicago – There is an underlying smokiness to the ultra-violent “Safe” that is worth exploring. By creating a triangle of doom between the Chinese mob (the Triads), the Russian mob and the corrupt New York City Police Department, it’s just a small leap to apply the same function between the countries they represent. Action star Jason Statham puts it all together.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There is a high body count and a lot of gunplay in this unusual thriller, which definitely has a post 9/11 vibe. The criminal mobs are reflected in the police “special units” within the department, and all three cooperate with each other to mostly work against each other. If that isn’t diplomacy in the age of terrorism, then it is back to metaphor class. It is also interesting to note that the outsider, portrayed by Jason Statham, becomes protective of a Chinese girl, which was a trend in...

If you still haven’t decided if you want to see Jason Statham’s latest ass-kicking venture, the Boaz Yakin-directed “Safe” yet, I would recommend you do so. Especially if you’re a fan of Statham’s brand of mayhem, then “Safe” will more than provide plenty of material to further your love of the man. But if you’re not a fan of the Stath? Eh, you’re probably not interested in this clip, either, which finds Statham beating the living crap out of a bunch of Russians on the subway. This is also basically what “Safe” is all about — Jason Statham going from one scene to another, beating, shooting, and just generally destroying everything and everyone in his path. Good times, good times. “Safe” co-stars Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, Reggie Lee, Danny Hoch, James Hong, and Anson Mount, and opens wide today. Be there...

This is a great week for first-run comedies in Austin. I've seen three of these new movies and I would watch them all again -- they all made me laugh. And if those aren't not enough for you, The Cabin in the Woods is still screening in town.
In addition, SXSW 2011 multiple awardwinner and Central Texas-shot film Natural Selection (Debbie's review) returns to Austin this week as part of Austin Film Society's "Best of the Fests" series. Writer/director Robbie Pickering and producer Paul Jensen will attend the Wednesday, May 2 screening at Alamo Drafthouse Village. Get your tickets now via the Afs website.
On Thursday night, Cinema41 screens the 1997 movie Clockwatchers, starring Toni Collette and Parker Posey, at Salvage Vanguard Theater. And the Hayao Miyazaki film Princess Mononoke is playing at Alamo Drafthouse all week long as part of Alamo's Studio Ghibli series.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A young kid is in possession of a highly valuable code that many would kill for. Stored safely in the kid’s mind, the only way to get the code is to capture the kid alive. But there’s one tough badass standing in everyone’s way, protecting and hiding the kid at every turn. Sound familiar? That’s more or less the plot of Safe. It’s also more or less the plot of the nearly forgotten 1998 film Mercury Rising. Trade out an Nsa code for a code for the combination of a safe (ha, get it!) and a 9-year-old autistic boy for an 11-year-old Chinese girl and you basically have the same movie. Mei (Catherine Chan) is a brilliant young student whose smarts and attitude give her teachers a bit of headache. But when the Chinese mob learns of her photographic memory, they...

Crime drama was not a genre that interested me until Luc Besson's 1994 Leon: The Professional, when I was lured in by the development of the quasi-paternal relationship of killer Leon and young girl Mathilda. Their relationship added another dimension to this genre for me, and since then I'm more inclined to view these often ultra-violent films that I might have previously avoided.
Reminiscent of The Professional, the crime thriller Safe opens in theaters this weekend and stars Jason Statham as Luke Wright, an ex-cage fighter with a mysterious past. Admittedly, all it takes to pique my interest in an action movie nowadays is the name Jason Statham thanks to his beefy role in the Transporter franchise.
However, within the first few scenes it is obvious that there are two stars of this film -- Catherine Chan in her feature debut as Mei has as much if not more screen time than Statham.

Jason Statham is not to be trifled with. Though if you only saw the first 20 minutes of Boaz Yakin’s “Safe”, you may think that last statement is a tad of an over-estimation of the man. Let me assure you — it’s not. Statham is a whirlwind of violence and sheer bone-breaking badassery as Luke Wright, an ex-cop turned cage fighter turned homeless bum. The reasons for our man’s fall from grace in “Safe” are many, including the death of his wife and unborn child at the hands of the Russian mob, the price of failing to take a dive during a fight. Besides not only not taking that dive, our hero actually puts his competition in a coma. So, you know, that’s like double the insult to the guy paying him to take the dive and whatnot. Things look up for Luke when he runs across 11-year...

Safe
Starring Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon
Directed by Boaz Yakin
Rated R
It's sad when I go into an action film starring Jason Statham that I automatically have extremely low expectations. The guy can act, just see any British film he's done (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Mean Machine, etc.), so I know he has some talent. That aside, I also think he has a knack for action, and rather enjoyed the Crank films (mindless, nonstop action can be quite the guilty pleasure).
So what I don't get is, why do you attempt to muddy the waters with a weak plot, sad dialogue that feels it has to explain everything (aside from some good one-liners), and basically rip off the plot from The Man From Nowhere? If you're going to go for action with Jason Statham, just let the man kick ass for 90 minutes, forget the plot.

Lionsgate's Safe directed by Boaz Yakin, looks set to deliver action galore. Fans out for a little Stathanism as I call it, shouldn't be disappointed this weekend when the action crime flick makes its box office debut. Sure, it won't top the charts, but Statham has a hefty fan base, and this new clip from the Boaz Yakin-written-and-directed movie, aims to please. Also in the cast are Catherine Chan, James Hong, Reggie Lee, Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, Anson Mount, Danny Hoch and Jay Giannone. In Safe, A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change…until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt,...

Having worked on everything from Reservoir Dogs to Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill to Inglorious Basterds, Lawrence Bender’s reputation as a producer has become forever intertwined with the filmography of Quentin Tarantino (though, interestingly enough, he’s not on board for the writer-director’s upcoming Django Unchained). That’s perhaps the main reason why Bender’s recurring affiliation with Boaz Yakin, the writer-director behind Safe, has been largely unnoticed. Admittedly, Safe is the first Bender-Yakin collaboration since 1998′s A Price Above Rubies, but, as you’ll learn in the interview below, Bender and Yakin have remained extremely close since the days that preceded 1994′s even Fresh, and the producer has since been in constant search for something that would reunite the two in a professional environment as well as a personal one.
Also discussed in the interview is a gripe that was also made ever so clear by Yakin...

Through franchises like Transporter, Crank, and The Expendables - not to mention the pair of Guy Ritchie films that came before – Jason Statham‘s name has obviously become synonymous with an intense, hard-edged action persona. In his latest film, Boaz Yakin‘s Safe, that image is taken full advantage of, but, as you’ll see below, there’s a briefly-explored emotional hook that perhaps adds something new to Statham’s canon. It’s certainly not a transformation of any kind, but moments of quiet sincerity are sprinkled throughout his performance, and when the film affords him the chance, they happen to mesh rather well with the actor’s more prominent I’m-going-to-pummel-everyone-on-this-subway side.
Last week, Statham was doing the rounds here in New York City, and we participated in a fifteen-minute roundtable session that took place over at the Trump SoHo. He was sleekly decked out in full black, but his comments,...

There are moments of bliss in Safe. A subway-set brawl, save for the shoddy visual-effects rendering required when Jason Statham‘s Luke Wright is forced to climb aboard the fleeting train, comes to mind for its giddy acceptance of the film’s one true right to existence: the sheer joy of watching Statham pummel some mobsters to a pulp and spout off a host of hammy one-liners while doing so. Seriously, with all the redundant drivel that’s out there, you could do a whole lot worse than basking in the humorous delight of Statham’s no-nonsense intensity.
Problem is, Boaz Yakin, the film’s writer-director, appears to be doing everything in his power to keep these instances of Statham mayhem as few and far between as possible. He infuses the story with a second main character, 12-year-old Mei (Catherine Chan), which would be less of an obstacle if the...

Jason Statham returns for yet another action movie, and this one may well be his best yet. Here’s Duncan’s review of the mighty Safe…
It’s amazing what a physiological effect a film can have on me sometimes. Despite the high expectations I had of Safe after the thoroughly entertaining trailer, mixed with my ardent love of Jason Statham, I was exhausted when I went to the screening. So tired in fact, that when I spoke to a friend of mine just before the film started I was barely able to string two words together, even using the word ‘magical’ to describe my hopes for Safe.
Now, I’ve used many superlatives to describe the films of our man Statham over the years, but ‘magical’ isn’t a logical fit. Regardless, by the time Safe had finished, I was running high on adrenaline and in a state of absolute joy,...

Monthly Movie Preview – April 2012
Can you smell that? It’s the scent of “Almost Summer.” No, that’s not the name of a cheap fragrant candle, but the aroma multiplexes let waft when it’s almost the main season for blockbusters. But before we focus on mega movies like The Avengers in May, and The Dark Knight Rises in July, April has some unique choices for us, most of which are not based off comic books, or feature gluttonous budgets.
April is going to be an intimate month with a slew of romantic movies, some more comedic than others – American Reunion, The Lucky One, Think Like A Man, The Five-Year Engagement, and even the indie Darling Companion. Even the horror genre is going to see some unique spins, with movies like The Cabin in the Woods, Detention, and The Raven.
