The Alice Initiative, backed by a group of anonymous female film executives, has released its annual survey of up-and-coming female directing talent, ready for their first studio feature.
The Alice Initiative’s 2022 List of Emerging Female Directors is voted on every two years by executives and producers and is made up of 10 directors who have directed at least one, non-studio feature and another 10 directors that have yet to direct a feature but have garnered attention for their work on TV or in short films.
Past list honorees have included The Farewell’s Lulu Wang and Portrait of a Lady on Fire‘s Céline Sciamma. Feature film directors from The Alice Initiative’s 2020 list included Laure de Clermont-Tonnere, who helmed Netflix’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and Where the Crawdads Sing directors Olivia Newman.

Exclusive: Film, television and media production company Olive Bridge Entertainment, which is led by filmmaker Will Gluck and producer Richard Schwartz, today announced the promotions of Madison Jones and Jacqueline Monetta.
Jones has been elevated to Director of Development in the company’s TV division. Upcoming projects she’ll be working on include the Hulu series Woke, the upcoming eOne series Hollywood Con Queen, along with several other projects in development at Peacock, Netflix, Disney+ and ABC. She previously worked on Netflix’s Chicago Party Aunt and the Disney+ documentary mini-series Among The Stars. She’s a four-year vet of Olive Bridge.

Exclusive: Fox is developing How To Be Human, a multi-camera comedy from writer Brenda Hsueh (Disjointed) and Party Over Here, the production company founded by The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.
Written by Hsueh, How To Be Human revolves around Eve, a robot becoming sentient who breaks free from her lab so she can learn how to be human by living among them. But when she tries to convince three housemates to let her live with them, she realizes it’s not going to be so easy.

Exclusive: Olive Bridge Entertainment’s Will Gluck and Jodi Hildebrand are developing Constance, a magical family hybrid feature for Sony.
Based on his original idea, Onward scribe Keith Bunin is set to write the screenplay, the storyline of which is under wraps.
Gluck counts over $782M WW at the global box office, his most recent hit being Peter Rabbit which grossed over $351M WW. The sequel he directed, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which was delayed due to Covid, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11.
Onward, which Bunin co-wrote, was the last notable family film to debut before theaters closed down because of the pandemic last year, opening to $39.1M stateside and grossing $142M before segueing to Disney+. Additionally, Bunin just delivered a feature adaptation of Delorean, which George Clooney will direct for MGM, and an adaptation of the Edith Macefield Story, which will be directed by George C. Wolfe.

The company has a first-look deal with the studio, and Olive Bridge’s film head Jodi Hildebrand will also produce. The film will be written by Nicole Delaney, with an eye for her to direct.

Exclusive: After optioning the screen rights, Greenland and The Night House producer Anton has tapped rising U.S. scribe Meredith Dawson to adapt Rosie Danan’s debut novel The Roommate, which has been getting strong notices ahead of general release next month.
Described by The New York Times last week as a “warmly funny and gorgeously sexy porn-star romance”, the novel follows two unlikely roommates – one straight-laced, the other an adult film star – who get more than they bargained for when the sparks that fly between them inspire a plan to launch a sexy, feminist start-up that risks their hearts and the wrath of a porn empire.
The book won the 2019 Romance Writers of America Golden Heart award for Best Contemporary Romance, and will be published by Berkley (US) and Piatkus/Little Brown (UK) on September 15.
Producer-financier Anton is producing, and The Gotham Group (The Maze Runner series) is executive-producing.

Universal Pictures nabbed rights to “When Michael Met Carrie… and Other People,” a spec script from Meredith Dawson, who is also attached to direct. Paul Feig is attached to produce.
Plot details are currently unknown, though the creative team promises it’s a new take on the romantic comedy.
