New Trailer for The Blackening: "The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver & Dewayne Perkins, The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

Actor Robert Blake, a man with a long and complex legacy, has died, a representative for his son-in-law Gregg Hurwitz confirmed to Variety. The former child actor was best known for his Emmy-winning role as the cockatoo-owning undercover cop in the popular 1970s TV series “Baretta” and, more infamously, for his trial following the 2001 murder of his wife. He was 89.
As reported by the Associated Press, Blake died from heart disease on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles.
These two aspects of Blake’s legacy were inseparable in some ways, and the personal turmoil that made the latter at least circumstantially plausible (the case against Blake hinged on motive — he may have wanted to be free of his rocky marriage) fueled his acting.
Blake was acquitted of the murder charge, as well as of one count of soliciting murder, in his criminal trial in 2005, but in a civil trial later that year,...

Fremantle has deepened its relationship with Artists, Writers & Artisans, Inc. (Awa) by making a minority investment in the company.
Fremantle had struck a strategic development deal with Awa Studios, the film and television division of Awa, last year.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In 2021, the company established Awa Studios, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president. Marvel alum Axel Alonso serves as co-founder and chief creative officer overseeing editorial output. Matthew Anderson, co-chair and president and Jon Miller, co-founder and co-chair, lead Awa’s executive team.
The two companies have revealed that the first project on the joint development slate after Fremantle taking a stake in Awa is “Devil’s Highway,” a thriller based on the comic series by Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover in which a young woman seeks to unravel a sinister mystery hidden in the dark underbelly of the long-haul trucking industry.

Fremantle, the production unit of Bertelsmann-owned TV giant Rtl Group, has made a strategic minority investment in Artists, Writers & Artisans (Awa), an independent developer of stories from creative talent working across graphic fiction, film and television.
James Murdoch’s investment firm Lupa Systems, an existing Awa backer, co-led the new financial injection, which also included new capital from long-term Awa backers and “a number of strategic individual investors with expertise in production, finance, sports, human rights and technology,” the company said. Financial details and the size of the stake weren’t disclosed.
“This investment signifies a deepening of the initial partnership made between Fremantle and Awa in April 2022, which saw the companies come together to collaborate on co-developing a slate of TV projects based on Awa’s rapidly expanding IP library,” the partners said. “Awa Studios, Awa’s film and TV arm, will benefit from Fremantle’s strategic input and investment,...

In the 2018 midterm election, novelist Gregg Hurwitz and screenwriter Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Richard Jewell), along with director Marshall Herskovitz, worked behind the scenes helping a slew of Democratic candidates in what would be a successful effort to retake the U.S. House of Representatives. Beyond fundraising, they advised candidates on speeches and overall messaging. In the end, 21 of the 30 candidates that the group supported in 2018 won their elections.
Two years ago, the trio was back in action in the 2020 election. Together with Altered Carbon creator Laeta Kalogridis and S.W.A.T. executive producer Shawn Ryan, they created what amounted to a political content studio, making more than 150 commercials, such as a high-profile ad which featured clips from Ronald Reagan’s “Shining City on a Hill” speech. Run by the group Republican Voters Against Trump, it asked “Has Your Party Left You?”

It’s hard to explain Marvel’s Moon Knight on the best of days. The former mercenary-turned-vigilante can mostly be found after dark on the streets of New York City, protecting those who travel by night as the earthly avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. But the man behind the mask, Marc Spector, also has Dissociative Identity Disorder, which means that he can flip between alternate identities like that of ‘Steven Grant’ and ‘Jake Lockley’.
He’s a complex character who now has almost 50 years of comics under his belt. As a result, it can be a bit daunting if you’re looking for a way into his Marvel Comics history and aren’t sure where to start. Luckily, we’re here to help you as much as we can by isolating some of his best offerings to date!

Paramount Players has optioned eight novels from author Gregg Hurwitz’s “Marked Man” series of books, with plans to adapt them for a series of feature films.
The division of the ViacomCBS-owned studio, run by Jeremy Kramer, is eyeing lower budgets for the contemporary noir thrillers and specifically looking for diverse and perhaps first-time writers and directors to create the world.
Hurwitz is the bestselling author of “Orphan X” and will produce the films alongside Emmy winner Scott Frank, producer of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” The latter brought the books to the studio. While not connected by a central character, Hurwitz’s novels are among the most praised of the pot-boiler genre — usually invoking heinous crimes or geopolitical intrigue. The film adaptations are said to be connected thematically.
Full titles being optioned include “Do No Harm,” “The Crime Writer,” “Trust No One,” “They’re Watching,” “You’re Next,” “The Survivor,...

Where to start with a movie like “Sweet Girl?” Its co-screenwriter is Gregg Hurwitz, the scribe of the infamous 2017 feature “The Book of Henry,” and, really, “Sweet Girl” feels like a sister to that movie. Both features espouse a dark narrative rooted in the social issues of the day before a big right turn onto “Are You Kidding Me?” Avenue. Things get weird and that weirdness probably seemed unique to everyone involved.
The “sweet girl” in question is Rachel Cooper (Isabela Merced), the daughter of Ray Cooper (Jason Momoa). Ray and Rachel have been struggling in the wake of family matriarch Amanda’s (Adria Arjona) death from cancer. To add insult to injury, Amanda’s death could have probably been prevented had a generic drug been made available to her instead of being indefinitely delayed by a competing drug company led by Simon Keeley (Justin Bartha).

Big Pharma are killers, and they take a resounding beating, in “Sweet Girl” — literally. An actioner about a father who responds to personal tragedy by going on a bloodthirsty rampage with his teen daughter in tow, Brian Andrew Mendoza’s feature debut is a giddily outlandish exploitation throwback, featuring Jason Momoa as a grieving bruiser whose answer for everything is violence, violence and more violence. Delivering the sort of R-rated macho carnage that was all the rage in the ’80s and ’90s, when it debuts on Netflix on Aug. 20.
Following some cornball voiceover that accompanies the sight of Ray Cooper (Momoa) leaping off the roof of Pittsburgh’s Pnc Park in front of FBI agent Sarah Meeker (Lex Scott Davis), “Sweet Girl” rewinds to detail the misfortune that befalls Ray when his wife Amanda (Adria Arjona) falls ill with cancer. Hope briefly arrives when Ray and his 18-year-old daughter Rachel...

Caught somewhere in between Jurassic World and Star Wars Episode IX – American auteur Colin Trevorrow is releasing The Book of Henry, a film far more steeped in the real world, and yet equally as fantastical. To mark the release of the family drama, out in the UK on June 23rd, we had the pleasure of speaking to the man at the helm.
We asked Trevorrow about the changes made to this Gregg Hurwitz screenplay, which was originally crafted two decades ago. The director also speaks about how his own approach differed, compared to when he’s on the set of a huge blockbuster, and also on the tone of the film, and just how much of a challenge it was to get right.
Finally, and let’s face it, we couldn’t exactly help ourselves, we spoke about Star Wars, and what it means to him to be involved in such a treasured franchise, while he gives us an update as to when his work fully gets going. In the meantime however there’s the eagerly anticipated Jurassic World sequel, and while J.A. Bayone is on directing duties, he’s still working from a Trevorrow screenplay, and we asked whether that alleviates the pressure somewhat – and just how refreshing it is that he can leave the set and buy a bagel, and not have anyone notice.
Watch the full interview below…
Synopsis

When Susan discovers that the family next door harbours a dark secret, she’s surprised to learn that Henry has devised a plan to help the young daughter.

Chicago – There are some total exasperations in “The Book of Henry”… numerous ones that are almost deal breakers. But somehow, some way, the strange twists and ideas take over, and the film becomes fable-like, examining a different line of story elements that switch from one character to another. Director Colin Trevorrow (“Jurassic Park” reboot) reveals a love in what he is doing in this film, and that also counts for something.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The early part of the tale, the part with the title character in it, is the most exasperating part. The notion of a 12 year-old boy handling family finances and spouting philosophical existentialism to a bunch of public school six graders is too precious to sit through, and there are many squirms in the front end. At some point that character becomes more ethereal, and hovers over the proceedings like an avenging angel. That switch brings the Naomi Watts character to the front,...

Summer may seem far from award season prime time, but this was a busy week for awards watchers. Distributors and Oscar campaigners are already pushing out new movies and positioning them for slots on the awards calendar. How they did ranged from impressive to fairly dreadful. Here’s a look at how it shook out.

Question: How do you deal with a bad movie made with complete and utter sincerity? Answer: Better than you do with cynical product solely motivated by box office. The Book of Henry starts well, begins flirting with absurdity in the middle – and ends in crashing disaster. But the feeling persists that director Colin Treverrow believes every word in the shambles of a 20-year-old screenplay by crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz.

Gregg Hurwitz, the screenwriter behind “The Book of Henry,” is a writer of crime novels and thrillers. For this movie, Hurwitz has overlaid a dubious sort of vigilante-like thriller plot on top of a family comedy-drama, and this is a shame, because the family story is often the richer of the two. The opening credits — which are set to a gentle piano-based score by Michael Giacchino — show us intricate drawings in a book, and this seems to be the set-up for a film aimed at children. “People are decent mostly,” says young Henry (Jaeden Lieberher) on the soundtrack...

Before it takes a bizarre dark twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan bristle with envy, “The Book of Henry” is a very familiar sort of family drama: Single mother Susan (Naomi Watts) juggles a thankless waitressing gig with caring for her two young children. One them, 11-year-old Henry (Jaeden Lieberher) exhibits above-average intelligence, managing the family finances and providing a practical voice to offset Susan’s chaotic personal life. Henry’s idiosyncratic personality leads to a number of whimsical, bittersweet exchanges. Somebody gets cancer, and the movie becomes a painfully obvious tearjerker.
And then, quite suddenly, the sentimentalism gives way to Hitchcockian suspense, and the most ludicrous conceit of any American movie this year. It’s a high-stakes gamble that doesn’t quite pay off, and at times courts disaster, but it’s fascinating to watch the movie go there.
That’s due, in part, to the conditions surrounding its existence.

Complain all you want about Colin Trevorrow's The Book of Henry — one thing you can't say is that it's not enough movie. It begins as a kid-genius family picture, then abruptly becomes a terminal-illness melodrama; it winds up a bizarro thriller in which deeply unlikely crimes are plotted from beyond the grave, but not before some child-molestation action pitting a defenseless girl against her stepfather, the commissioner of police.
The preposterousness of Gregg Hurwitz's screenplay isn't enough to throw star Naomi Watts off her game, and the actor's sincere performance may suffice to keep a segment of the family-film demographic...

The Book of Henry is notable only as a new addition to a canon of films that are bizarre in an extraordinarily specific way. These are the mainstream movies, the work of professionals, which nonetheless feature stories and beats which seem too defiantly out there to get through the Hollywood system. They are the movies destined to be remembered only in bottom-of-the-idea-barrel listicles or “My World of Flops” or How Did This Get Made — your Shadowboxers, Tiptoeses, The Beavers. They are weird, but in a subdued way and with big-name actors, which only enhances the weirdness. They exist in a limbo between the safe homogeneity of most wide-release films and the gonzo possibilities of the low-budget world — strange enough to be a curiosity, but not strange enough to recommend on that quality alone. They are rarely good, but traditional notions of “good” and “bad” don’t really apply when considering them.
