Exclusive: Netflix and the Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground prevailed in a mid-six-figure spec deal for Dyersville, a fact-based Chicago-set crime thriller. Will Hettinger wrote the script, and Grant Singer is near a deal to direct, so this is all moving on a fast track.
Dyersville became a hot spec that had five buyers circling. They asked to keep the plot under wraps, but I can report it is set in the Obamas’ old stomping grounds, in Chicago. Higher Ground’s Vinnie Malhotra and Mark Write will be the producers.
Hettinger has been a staff writer on the Netflix series Painkiller and the Starz series Hunting Wives. His script The Final Score made The Black List, but this is his first feature sale.

After premiering on Netflix on September 29, 2023, Reptile trended on the streaming platform’s top 10 for over a month. While it has had mixed reception from critics, it has managed to captivate the minds of many audiences. About two weeks after it premiered on Netflix, it was the most-watched English language film, attracting over 19 million views. As a general whodunnit film, director Grant Singer‘s crime thriller will leave viewers choosing and changing possible lead suspects. Although at some point during its 136-minute run, its story begins to feel like a drag, the cast performances help push the plot to...

Somewhere in the neighbourhood of, 100,000 people die a year of opioid overdoses in the United States alone. This is a sad result of the ongoing Opioid Epidemic which, in part, was driven largely by the increasing prescriptions of opioids for pain management pushed by companies like Purdue Pharma. While the oxycontin story was previously dramatized as Dopesick by Hulu and Painkiller by Netflix, Purdue wasn’t the only company with pharma reps pushing prescriptions. One company called Insys Therapeutics moved a fentanyl spray that was heavily marketed to doctors through thinly veiled bribes, which were first documented in a story by journalist Evan Hughes that was called “The Pain Hustlers.”

Since it debuted on Netflix in early October, the Benicio Del Toro-starring "Reptile" has consistently been one of the top 10 most-watched titles on the streaming platform. The film is the feature debut of director Grant Singer, who cut his teeth directing music videos for artists like The Weeknd, Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Ariel Pink, and Skrillex. "I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don't know where it's leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you," Singer said in the film's press release. "And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they'll find something exciting in this." Here's the film's official synopsis:

With Grant Singer’s Reptile, Netflix has a solid word of mouth hit on its hands. A crime thriller starring Benicio Del Toro, Alicia Silverstone, Justin Timberlake and Eric Bogosian, the film has sat at the top of Netflix’s top 10 for the last two weeks. Indeed, we caught it at TIFF (read our review) and really enjoyed the darkly humorous thriller, which eventually evolves into a tense action thriller boasting one of Del Toro’s most outstanding performances.
It marks the feature directorial debut of Singer, best known for his music videos. We were lucky enough to chat with Singer recently, who seems to have a bright future ahead of him as a director. While some have dubbed the film David Fincher-esque, if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll note that it likely owes more to the work of Sidney Lumet, which is by design.

In the two weeks since its release, Grant Singer’s Reptile has remained atop Netflix’s own film charts with 19.9 million views and counting. The Benicio Del Toro-led crime thriller is Singer’s feature directorial debut after nearly a decade of making inventive music videos for the likes of The Weeknd, Lorde and Ariana Grande. The film centers around Del Toro’s Detective Tom Nichols, as he investigates the murder of a real estate agent (Matilda Lutz) and uncovers a tangled web of corruption within his new community in Maine.
At a time when crime dramas and murder mysteries are still immensely popular, especially on Netflix, Singer, along with his co-writers Benjamin Brewer and Del Toro himself, knew that they had to work overtime to keep viewers on their toes.

Grant Singer made his feature debut with Reptile, recently released on Netflix, but to music video connoisseurs he has been an exciting name for well over ten years. Since storming on to the scene with a few music videos for Sky Ferreira and Travi$ Scott, if you wanted to look effortlessly cool you called Grant Singer. He worked with everyone who was hip and happening, like Ariel Pink, Skrillex, Ariana Grande, Lorde, Troye Sivan and The Weeknd, and excelled at a certain style of video that was earlier perfected by David Fincher, which...

The Boy and the Heron. Those attending the Toronto International Film Festival since its center moved downtown to the impressive Bell Lightbox cinema complex in 2010 can’t fail to notice the skyscrapers and new developments sprouting up around the neighborhood. They’ve been replacing older and lower edifices, redeveloping railyards and more industrial areas, filling in the gaps between Queen Street West and the Lake Ontario waterfront like an invasive species. Each year you think the transformation should be complete, and then again encounter new monoliths in once-familiar places and additional construction that blocks old shortcuts. Such gentrification—and the affluent residents it attracts—might be appealing to a festival like TIFF, but these towering and glassily characterless surroundings evoke TIFF’s own identity crisis: as it vies for profitability, its program is voluminous and contemporary, but it lacks a perspective. A festival cannot be a meaningful event without a point of view,...

Another week, another Netflix Top 10 list. In the murky realms of Grant Singer’s Reptile, audiences delve into a tale woven with intrigue, and mystery. Penned by Singer, Benjamin Brewer and Benicio Del Toro, the film attempts to entangle the viewer in a web of murder and corruption, manifesting through the gritty lens of a small-town investigation. Del Toro is flanked by supporting actors including Alicia Silverstone, Michael Pitt, Ato Essandoh, Justin Timberlake, Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Eric Bogosian and Domenick Lombardozzi,. However, the atmospheric tension conjured by the film echoes of potential left unexplored, marking it as a journey through familiar terrain desperately grasping for an identity of its own.

The engaging and surprising crime film “Reptile” is flying slightly under the radar and perhaps even somewhat underestimated. Maybe it is because it’s a Netflix film, which often falls into—one piece of content of many, for better or worse—maybe it’s because it’s been marketed in a pretty standard straightforward way that makes it look like a prototypical crime or killer procedural.

Don’t get me wrong, Grant Singer’s Reptile delivers its promising grizzly noir procedural in the most thrilling manner, but then, as if shooting us in the gut, fizzles everything out in the end with far less grit. In the first 40 minutes or so of Reptile, I thought to myself, This is like Zodiac, keeping me on the edge of my seat in wonder, shock, awe—all of the right feelings for a detective film like itself. Reptile does everything right aesthetically: gray for melancholy and a leather jacket for the detective, who himself appears as morally gray, but under the surface it simply comes across as a half-baked experiment.
Produced by and starring Benicio Del Toro, who also co-wrote the film, Reptile paints a picture of a small-town murder where a hardened detective weeds his way to the truth. Tom Nichols (Del Toro) is a detective with a...

Black Label Media, consisting of sisters Molly and Rachel Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, have returned to the screen with their calling card: a Benicio Del Toro-led crime thriller.
The independent production and finance company, most known for producing the Sicario films and co-financing La La Land, is set to release Grant Singer’s Reptile this Friday on Netflix, and it’s another example of Black Label’s commitment to preserving mid-budget films, as well as genres that are less prioritized now by the major studios.
Knowing how Del Toro works from their previous two Sicario films, Black Label teamed him up early with Reptile co-writer/director Singer and co-writer Benjamin Brewer, so that he didn’t have to present his own rewrites and suggestions during production. And due to the pandemic shutdown, the added collaboration time has now resulted in Del Toro’s first co-writing credit on a feature film.

Del Toro co-scripts and stars as a tough detective with a somewhat grimy past charged with investigating a horrific killing
Grant Singer is an A-list music video director who is now making a tough, ambitious but flawed feature debut with a film he co-scripted with his producer-star Benicio Del Toro, alongside Benjamin Brewer. It’s a noir procedural thriller, with Del Toro as seasoned cop Tommy Nichols, noted for his stolid impassive professionalism, who has just taken up a new job in Maine. Tommy left his old station in Philadelphia under suspicion of having covered up for a corrupt partner; he is a guy respected in the ranks for his honesty, but also for his code of omerta loyalty to his fellow officers. Tommy is married to Judy (a nice performance from Alicia Silverstone) who is a supportive and worldly cop wife, whose relatives in this close-knit community helped Tommy get the job.

I saw “Reptile,” the new Netflix homicide thriller, at home on a link and decided to watch it with subtitles, since this is the sort of moody cop noir about life in the shadows where there’s a lot of murmuring going on. And I didn’t want to miss a clue. This means, of course, that the subtitles will keep cueing you with descriptives like “sinister music” or “quiet ominous music,” and I couldn’t help but notice that this happened around 50 times. So much quietly sinister ominous music! That’s fair game for the genre, though it’s laid on a bit thick in “Reptile,” and that’s an emblem of the film’s aesthetic, which might be described as understated overstatement.

Plot: A detective (Benicio del Toro) living in New England with his wife (Alicia Silverstone) investigates the gruesome death of a local real estate magnate’s (Justin Timberlake) wife.
Review: There’s a version of Reptile that could have been a standard cop noir. After all, how many movies have we seen about a rumpled detective investigating a murder that implicates a well-connected family? Yet, director Grant Singer seems less interested in making the straight-laced neo-noir this could have been and instead turns this into a quirky, darkly comedic riff on the genre that almost functions as a spoof at times. After all, a movie that uses Bob Dylan’s ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door” for a gunfight can’t expect us to take it entirely seriously.

This minute-long clip from Netflix’s Reptile is short on dialogue but incredibly intense. The scene focuses on Benicio Del Toro chasing a shooter who’s attempting to take out the cops pursuing him.
In addition to Benicio Del Toro, the neo-noir crime thriller stars Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Frances Fisher, and Ato Essandoh. Eric Bogosian, Domenick Lombardozzi, Michael Carmen Pitt, Karl Glusman, and Matilda Lutz also star.
Del Toro was also busy behind the scenes, co-writing the screenplay with director Grant Singer and Benjamin Brewer. Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill produced, and Del Toro, Rick Yorn, and Rachel Smith executive produced.

For a first feature, Grant Singer could certainly do worse than Reptile. The question remains whether Netflix is capable of allowing anything better than routine potboiler material to fill their trove of originally produced and distributed films. Much of the streamer studio’s output has been heavily underwhelming and this latest offering is no different, the only adhesive element Benicio Del Toro’s natural screen gravitas. When he plays a cop or detective, like his Oscar-winning turn in Steven Soderberg’s Traffic or Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, it’s basically a cheat code.
Grant Singer’s best directorial decision in a film filled with clumsy ones is giving Del Toro as much real estate as possible, in many occasions having the entire screen filled by his visage––sad, squinted, glaring eyes look right at you through the dead-center of the frame. His voice, raspy and exhausted-sounding, talking under breath nearly the whole time,...

Ace music video helmer Grant Singer has worked with pop superstars like The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Lorde and Sam Smith to make artists and their record labels look good as they market album releases.
So you would expect Singer was in his element when he got into the director’s chair for his fiction feature debut, Reptile, a dark, moody crime thriller for Black Label Media and Netflix in which Benicio Del Toro plays a hardened homicide cop hunting down a killer amid small-town New England corruption and conspiracy, while trying to escape his own past.
Turns out Singer’s internal pressure gauge redlined on the Reptile set. “I always put a lot of pressure on myself to deliver on what I set out to deliver on. But this was on another level, in terms of me really wanting to take advantage of this opportunity, to do something...

Finally, a pop crime procedural that leans into the frustration of dealing with real-estate agents and kitchen renovations. All jests aside Grant Singer's debut film, a Netflix original, bucks the recent trend of the streaming service spitting out entertainment-by-algorithm. Reptile is quirky enough, fresh enough, take on the neo-noir whodunnit with deep cast. It has a thoroughbred of a lead, in the form of a mustachioed Benicio del Toro. Here giving a committed and nuanced performance as well, but not too well-dressed detective Tom Nicols, Del Toro is channeling that imposing Sicario energy without the geopolitical muck-raking, or assault rifle soldiering. Note that Reptile shares some of the that film’s producers. At one point after questioning a witness, Tom takes...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix releases the film on its streaming platform theaters on Friday, October 6.
“Reptile” opens on the plaintive notes of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” wafting through a sequence in which realtor couple Will (Justin Timberlake) and Summer (Matilda Lutz) prep a lavish property for a showing. It then splits to Will presenting to a conference as Summer hangs out in a gym’s locker room. Newton’s tune stutters and stops. These mundane moments with an oddball soundtrack are meant to create early suspense: Summer will eventually be murdered in a vacant property. And Will is the prime suspect.
And yet, “Reptile,” the directorial feature from Grant Singer — a music video director known for his collaborations with The Weeknd and Taylor Swift — isn’t really about Summer or Will. It concerns Detective Tom Nichols.

It’s fitting that Grant Singer opens Reptile, his meandering feature directorial debut, with an “Angel of the Morning” needle drop. Chip Taylor composed that aching tune about a one-night stand because he wanted to capture a passionate and ephemeral feeling. “It was beyond words,” he has said of the 1967 song. “And that is the power.”
Singer, like Taylor, reaches for the ineffable. The director, who’s helmed music videos for pop music royalty up until this point, is obsessed with controlling atmosphere and setting the mood. He crowds Reptile with gripping sequences, suspenseful moments, dramatic pauses and surprising levity — elements that, despite their overuse, keep the audience on edge and strategically blur the lines between dreams and reality. A malevolent score by Berlin-based composer Yair Elazar Glotman, with an assist from Venezuelan musician Arca, helps calibrate this tension and adds to the movie’s overall mysterious air.

You may never see a thriller more determined to tell you what a thriller it is than “Reptile.” The film, the feature directorial debut of music video and commercial director Grant Singer, is so stylish that it’s obnoxious and so determined to crank up the portentousness at every opportunity that it almost plays like a parody of a dense, thorny crime thriller.
But if you take it with a sense of humor and appreciate the performances by Benicio del Toro, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Eric Bogosian, Frances Fisher and other actors trying to put a spin on all those thriller beats, the Netflix production can be a hoot at times. As to whether you’ll still care about whodunit after more than two hours of overheated foreplay and teasing – well, I couldn’t do it, but your mileage may vary.
