Gina Rodriguez is stepping into the ring in what marks her directorial debut as Rodriguez, Ryan Garcia, One Community and Endeavor Content are teaming up to develop a feature film about a fictional character inspired by some of Garcia’s experiences in and around the sport as a Mexican-American boxer. Rodriguez will direct, star, produce and will co-write the screenplay with actor and playwright Bernardo Cubria. Garcia will also star star.
“I grew up in a boxing family and loved watching sports dramas with my dad. The philosophies of fighting – working hard, staying focused, being honest, fighting fair but to win – has stayed with me,” said Rodriguez. “On behalf of myself and my production company I Can and I Will, I couldn’t be more excited to partner with Ryan Garcia on this film. He is not only an outstanding athlete and champion, but a true advocate of normalizing and furthering conversations on mental health.

Gina Rodriguez is teaming up with professional boxer Ryan Garcia to develop a sports drama about the athlete’s experiences as a Mexican American lightweight champion.
Rodriguez, best known for The CW’s take on a telenovela “Jane the Virgin,” is directing, co-starring and producing the film. She’s previously helmed episodes of “Jane the Virgin,” but the upcoming, still-untitled movie marks her feature filmmaking debut.
Rodriguez will also co-write the screenplay with actor and playwright Bernardo Cubria (“The Giant Void in My Soul”).
Alongside Rodriguez, the 22-year-old Garcia is starring in the film as a fictional version of himself. Due to Garcia’s fighting schedule, the movie won’t begin shooting until summer of 2022.
Inspired by movies like “Rocky” and “Creed,” the sports drama mirrors Garcia’s own journey and follows a Mexican American boxer named Alex Guerrero (Garcia) whose struggles with mental health rival his toughest bouts in the ring.

If there’s been one constant about Latino representation in Hollywood, it’s been the abysmal representation that has barely shifted in decades.
Despite some gains in recent years, a 2019 study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed that underrepresentation and stereotypical roles for U.S.-based Latinx talent are, sadly, still the norm.
Enter Broken English Prods., a fledgling Latinx production company, which hopes to “change the narrative,” in the words of its CEO Christopher Acebo. The new shingle joins Lionsgate’s Pantelion and other companies in addressing the paucity of Latinx films.
Broken English forms part of new entertainment finance company Grandave Capital (Gc), launched by film financier Stanley Preschutti in June, which has boarded projects as a third-party equity investor but has also plowed considerable funding to its new Latinx production arm.
Gc aims to invest some $20 million in up to four Broken English projects a year...

The semifinalists have been named for the 13th annual NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, which celebrates diverse stories in a search for the next generation of storytellers.
Chosen from more than 3,400 submissions, the semifinalists feature stories about people of ethnically diverse backgrounds, the Lgbtq community, and women. Of the 15 projects that made the cut this year, 11 are directed and/or directed by women, topping 2017’s record inclusion rate, and about half feature stories centered on female protagonists.
“In a time where female storytellers are powerfully calling on the industry for more opportunities and recognition, it is fitting that our Short Film Festival has set a new record for female writers and directors represented in our semifinal shorts,” said Karen Horne, Svp programming talent development & inclusion at NBC Entertainment. “I’m proud that our festival not only puts more female storytellers into the spotlight but also features an array of impactful shorts about diverse people.
