James Franco has signed on to adapt the murder mystery novel The Killer Next Door.
The actor will work with Ahna O'Reilly on the project based on the book by Alex Marwood, according to Variety.
The story follows six neighbours who are forced into a shaky alliance with each other, not knowing a murderer is amongst them who will go to any lengths to keep their activities a secret.
There is no word yet on whether Franco will be starring in or directing the film, but it's possible he will fill both roles.
Franco has also been working on The Long Home, an adaption of the William Gay novel starring Josh Hutcherson, which he will produce, direct and star in.

At the rate he’s going with the novel adaptations, James Franco will be making movies from health and safety leaflets found in NHS waiting rooms before too long. He has another novel in development, collaborating with Ahna O’Reilly on The Killer Next Door. Alex Marwood’s murder mystery, which hit bookshops last year, finds six seemingly disparate neighbours forced into an uneasy alliance, little realising that one of them is a murderer willing to do anything to keep his secret. It feels a little different from the stories Franco has been adapting of late, which is probably why he and O’Reilly chose it. He’s worked on films based on John Steinbeck and William Faulkner books and William Gay’s coming-of-age tale The Long Home. Chances are he’ll end up directing and potentially starring in the film. O’Reilly has been appeared in several of the...

Courtney Love: the unlikeliest comeback story of the year? The Hole frontwoman, onetime critical darling and '90s cultural icon has been racking up an impressive number of acting credits lately, from recurring guest arcs on shows like "Sons of Anarchy," "Revenge" and "Empire" to her new role in the James Franco-directed feature "The Long Home," an adaptation of the 1999 William Gay novel about a young carpenter (Josh Hutcherson) who's contracted to build a honky-tonk by the man who murdered his father ten years earlier (Tim Blake Nelson). As reported yesterday, Love is set to play the wife of Nelson's antagonistic character in the 1940s Tennessee-set drama, which represents her first feature-film credit since -- are you ready? -- the 2002 thriller "Trapped" co-starring Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon. Could this be the beginning of a new chapter in Love's career? It's a little too early to make any grand pronouncements,...

After Sinister made a solid $18 million haul in its first weekend, Blumhouse Productions is understandably pleased with director Scott Derrickson and his efforts. But the eerie part comes when the woman refuses to give up the method, even after enduring a terrifying accident. Read on! William Gay’s stories were the stuff filmmakers dream of. His writing was like a punch to the face—swift and physical, electrifying. It woke you up. He worked a hardscrabble, stripped-down style—his sentences were sparse, with blatant disregard for quotes or unnecessary punctuation—but then every few pages you’d get this burst. It was poetry, lush and lyrical, dreamlike.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. Franklin Leonard‘s Black List is the go-to list for the hottest unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Just last year we got Margin Call, which is now one of the most-praised films of the year. The list also includes Doug Liman‘s next film, the thriller All You Need is Kill. David Guggenheim‘s Safe House hits theaters next spring with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington starring. Chan-wook Park‘s English-language debut Stoker was also in the top 10, along with Ben Affleck‘s recently wrapped CIA hostage film Argo, both arriving next fall.
Today, the top 10 has been unveiled and we get quite a mix of genres. There is a satirical behind-the-scenes film from Chewbacca aka Peter Mayhew‘s point-of-view, a zombie film, a homosexual WWII drama, a Melancholia-esque drama on separate people finding peace before the world ends, a space film about a botched Apollo 18 mission and much more...

A couple of years ago filmmaker Chad Feehan picked up the rights to a very well respected teen horror novel with the hopes of turning it into a feature film. He ran into one slight problem.
The book was unfortunately called Twilight. This book has nothing to do with Stephanie Meyer and doesn’t feature wanky effeminate glittery vampires strutting around looking moody and downbeat.
Instead it’s a brilliant gothic tale written by William Gay and tells of a brother and sister who uncover a seedy plot at their local funeral parlour. In all their wisdom the siblings decide to blackmail the undertaker, only to find themselves set upon by a relentless ex-con hired by the very man they were trying to blackmail. According to Screen Daily IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Feehan's psychological thriller Wake, which stars Josh Stewart ("Ghost Whisperer", The Collector, The Haunting of Molly Hartley) and Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Dark Ride, "The Sopranos"). As per usual IFC will release the flick through its IFC Midnight VOD service. Dig on the trailer and the plot crunch below.
The site also reports that Chad's next project will be an adaptation of William Gay's novel Twilight (no, not "that" Twilight) that will be called Beyond the Pale for obvious reasons. "In the novel teenage siblings Corrie and Kenneth Tyler suspect they've been ripped off by the town undertaker, but what they discover is much more sinister than either imagined.

In the previous article announcing IFC's acquisition of Wake they also reveal that director Chad Feehan will next direct Beyond The Pale, an adaptation of William Gay's novel "Twilight". In the novel teenage siblings Corrie and Kenneth Tyler suspect they've been ripped off by the town undertaker, but what they discover is much more sinister than either imagined. After their bootlegger father is buried, Kenneth sees undertaker Fenton Breece remove an item from the grave. The siblings dig up their father's grave, among others, and uncover unsettling evidence of Fenton's necrophilia. Corrie cooks up a blackmail plot and enlists Kenneth to steal Fenton's briefcase, which contains, as Kenneth and Corrie soon find out, photos depicting Fenton "capering gleefully" with corpses. Blackmail material in hand, Corrie demands $15,000 from Fenton, and Fenton hires local psychopath Granville Sutter to muzzleby whatever means necessarythe Tylers and get back the photos. - Publishers Weekly.

In mid-2008, producers Chad Feehan ( All the Boys Love Mandy Lane ) and Amanda Micallef took the screen rights to William Gay's novel "Twilight." Two years later, there is some movement on the project. According to Screen Daily, Feehan will direct the adaptation himself and the film will be called Beyond the Pale . Garnering kudos from Stephen King, the story follows two teens, living in a small Southern town, who discover the local undertaker, Fenton Breece, has been defiling the dead (necrophilia anyone?). They obtain incriminating photos of Breece's wrongdoings, but the fiend sets loose a convicted murder and local strongman to destroy the evidence.

Chicago – Director Scott Teems has been working the film exhibition circuit hard for the past two years since releasing “That Evening Sun” in 2009. Featuring Hal Holbrook in one of his finest roles, the film has built an audience one city at a time.
The compelling story is about a farmer named Meecham (Holbrook) in the twilight of his life, whose son has placed him in an elder care facility. Determined to reclaim his land, Meecham escapes from the facility, only to find another family living on his farm. He finds out that his son has allowed this, not knowing that the new tenants include a man named Choat (Ray McKinnon), who Meecham despises. His run-ins with Choat comprise the rest of the narrative, with themes of aging, family, friendship, redemption and truth.

Scott Teems directed one of my favorite films last year—That Evening Sun, an adaptation of a William Gay short story starring Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon and Carrie Preston. The movie made brilliant use of an original Drive-By Truckers song (which you can watch Patterson Hood play and discuss here). Teems, McKinnon and the Truckers have joined forces once again for the new Drive-By Truckers music video for “Working This Job.” The explicit version is below or you can watch the clean version at YouTube (the only difference is in the on-screen language)....

Television and Broadway actress Dixie Carter passed away Saturday morning at the age of 70. "This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, said in a statement. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy." Best known for her role as interior designer Julia Sugarbaker in Designing Women, the Tennessee native earned an Emmy nomination in 2007 for her guest appearance on Desperate Housewives. Her Broadway credits include a stint in Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2004. Carrie Preston, Mia Wasikowska, Hal Holbrook in That Evening Sun Directed by Scott Teems, who also adapted William Gay’s short story "I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down," That Evening Sun stars Hal Holbrook as Abner Meecham, an elderly Tennessee farmer who, after fleeing from his nursing home, returns to his homestead only to discover that his son (Walton Goggins) has leased the farm to a no-good neighbor (Ray McKinnon). Reviews have been highly positive. In Variety, Joe Leydon calls That Evening Sun "an exceptionally fine example of regional indie filmmaking," while in the New York Times Stephen Holden praises Holbrook’s "fierce, contained performance." If the 84-year-old Hal Holbrook is remembered by year-end film critics — and that seems quite likely, [...]...

It's time to move Hal Holbrook off the Oscar bubble and into the fold. The 84-year-old actor delivers arguably the performance of his career in That Evening Sun, director Scott Teems's terrific adaptation of the William Gay short story "I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down." Holbrook plays Abner Meecham, a Tennessean banished by his lawyer son (Walton Goggins) to a nursing home he'll soon flee in disgust. Returning to his farm, Abner discovers the Choate family -- led by ne'er-do-well patriarch Lonzo (Ray McKinnon) -- occupying the house he and his late wife built from scratch. When Abner decides to set up house in the tenant's quarters, the ensuing battle of wills between he and Lonzo zig-zags from comic to gothic to disturbingly violent -- thanks much to Holbrook's scenic route along the spectrum between righteousness and utter sociopathy. Imagine his celebrated character in Into the Wild...

Writer-director Scott Teems knew he'd written himself into a corner with That Evening Sun, an adaptation of William Gay's short story about an 80-something Southern man fighting to keep his house in the face of advanced age, surly renters and an indifferent son. Teems realized that there were very few elderly actors who could handle the role, much less the Southern accent, but he knew one guy who'd be perfect for it-- Hal Holbrook, the veteran actor recently Oscar nominated for Into the Wild, who knows a thing or two about remaining steadfast and stubborn into your 80s. In That Evening Sun, Holbrook plays Abner Meecham, a man who escapes from the retirement home to move back to his old farm, only to find that his son has rented out the place to another family, led by Lonzo Choat (Ray McKinnon), who hates Abner as much as Abner hates him.

With That Evening Sun, first time writer/director Scott Teems has adapted a modern Southern story (I Hate To See That Evening Sun Go Down, by Tennessee writer William Gay) into a elegiac, quiet film with heart, rugged authenticity, and a stubborn mule of a central character, portrayed by veteran actor Hal Holbrook. Holbrook's revelation of a performance in Sean Penn's Into the Wild two years ago (for which he received his first Oscar nomination at the age of 82 - the oldest actor ever nominated) caught Teems' eye; as he said, 'We knew we'd found our Abner.' Abner Meecham is an 80-year-old widower whose only son has moved him from his farm in West Tennessee into an assisted living facility several hours away. When Abner decides he's had enough of the place, he hitches back to the farm, only to find it (legally) occupied by the family of Lonzo Choat,...

As you read this I am quite possibly thousands of miles above you in a huge aluminum alloy vessel, travelling back to NYC. Nashville was a treat and I hope I get invited back to NaFF in some capacity. Here's a quick run down of the cinematic highlights for me. I was on the short film jury and didn't have a chance to see some of the narrative features so this is from a limited pool.

Hal Holbrook & Barry Corbin in That Evening Sun
As usual, the number of films seen during SXSW were in direct competition with the sum of hours slept, the quantity of BBQ consumed, the volume of alcoholic beverages imbibed, the length of lines endured and the number of parties partaken (Rachael Ray's was cool). And the music! I lost count of all the bands I saw, but I did enjoy: Bruce Robison at the Gibson Guitar party, the Meat Puppets at the Nat Geo taping, The Manichean at the Justice Records party, Theresa Andersson at the Boundless rooftop party and, of course, M. Ward at the Paste party.
Some final thoughts on a few more films...
