The hate for each of these projects has gained as much of a cult following as the shows themselves. But how much of it is justified?
Here are seven shows that are much better than critics and audiences say they are.
7. Imposters (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%
Where to watch: Prime Video, Fandango at Home
The list begins with Imposters, a well-crafted dark comedy about a con artist who seduces victims and takes their money, which, unlike many of the following shows, is currently receiving warm reviews. Unfortunately, the ratings were so low at the time of its release that the show was canceled after only two seasons.
6. Dark Matter (2015)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%
Where to watch: The CW
Dark Matter is often compared to a low-budget rip-off of The Expanse since both premiered in 2015. However, the show in question raised equally interesting ethical questions about the identity of the protagonists, and coupled with some good action scenes,...

Earlier this year, it was reported that Will Smith will continue his career damage control with a rare venture into indie territory with the action thriller Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.” With the film being put up at the European Film Market, which predominantly puts smaller films on display, the $80 million price tag makes the Will Smith vehicle the biggest movie at the show.
As the Cannes market event approaches, Deadline is reporting that Smith’s Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios have tapped Italian director Stefano Sollima to sit in the director’s seat for the vigilante thriller. Looking to keep his post-Oscar slap career resuscitation on more of an upward arc following the under-seen Emancipation, Will Smith is adding a new action thriller to his To Do list. He's now attached to star in Sugar Bandits.
This is a film that has been in development at Universal for a few years now; Joe Carnahan was rumoured to direct back in 2013, but he's nowhere to be found in Variety's story on Smith's jumping aboard.
Chuck Hogan, who worked on The Town and TV's The Strain remains attached, adapting his novel Devils In Exile. The script will focus on an Iraq War veteran named Neal Maven (Smith) who returns from the conflict with little hope of a good job or a satisfying future.
He teams up with a group of fellow vets to target the ill-gotten gains of Boston's drug trade, putting them firmly into the crosshairs of criminal types.

I don't know about you, but I love me a Nosferatu. With their shiny bald heads, sinewy claws, and animalistic nature, they are the antithesis of everything Count Dracula. Gone are allure, seduction, and charm, instead replaced by gargoyle-like beings who only have one thing on their mind; your blood.
With inspiration dating back to 1922, these beastly beings have been cropping up in film and television every few years, when audiences seemingly get tired of the Count's debonair musings. And if you're like me, you'll find yourself fist-pumping every time a new Nosferatu is born.

When it comes to dramatic storytelling, few shows do it better than Showtime's "Billions." Premiering in 2016, the series initially followed U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and hedge fund CEO Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Damian Lewis) in a cat-and-mouse game involving financial crimes, determined (and oft-corrupt) government officials, dysfunctional families, obsession, and tested loyalties. While taking some license to push the narrative and give each character a unique personality, "Billions" also highlights the real worlds of federal prosecutors and high finance. The first season and its two main characters were allegedly loosely inspired by the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara's case against Sac Capital Advisors founder Steven Cohen for insider trading.
As The Wall Street Journal reports, depicting these complicated worlds as accurately as possible was important to "Billions" co-creators and writers Andrew Ross Sorkin, Brian Koppelman, and David Levien, who...

Exclusive: J. Miles Dale, the Oscar-winning producer of The Shape of Water and an Oscar nominee for Nightmare Alley, has formed a creative partnership with Netflix. Dale will produce feature films under a multi-year first-look deal via his Demilo Films banner.
Dale’s currently an executive producer and co-showrunner on the Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and also executive producer on the Netflix series Sex/Life.
“Having just produced two series on the TV side at Netflix, I’m beyond excited to begin this new adventure with the feature film team,” Dale said. “I enjoyed a great partnership with Scott Stuber on a couple of films earlier in my career, and I look forward to expanding that relationship. It’s not wedding bells which break up the old gang in Ben Affleck’s The Town, it’s witness protection. The romance in the middle of the film is only there to delineate the boundaries between heist film and crime procedural. The movie’s center is Charlestown, right across the bridge from the rest of Boston, a legend in illicit locales. The blue-collar neighborhood “produced more bank robbers and armored car thieves than anywhere else in the world,” according to the movie’s prologue. Affleck’s second film as a director charts the fall of a mythic heist gang and the streets which made them.
The Boston area was prime cinematic crime fields during the early 2000s. In Black Mass, Johnny Depp plays South Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, an Irish gangster who informed on the Italian mob to the FBI. Some of the scenes were shot on the real crime locations depicted.

Guillermo del Toro has been directing movies since 1986 with his first short film Doña Lupe. Many were familiar with his horror films in the 1990s but it wasn’t until 2006 Pan’s Labyrinth that made him a household name.
Nightmare Alley is his new cinematic venture with an all-star cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara. Believe it not, his newest film contains a call back to his 1997 English language debut film Mimic.
In an interview with /Film, art director Tamara Deverell worked on Mimic and came to collaborate again on Nightmare alley and she revealed served as the production designer on del Toro’s vampire series The Strain (which he co-created with Chuck Hogan) in the 2010s and reunited with del Toro yet again on “Nightmare Alley.” What’s more, the noir drama even includes an easter egg commemorating their efforts on Mimic in the form of a...

The holiday season is probably going to look very different this year, but there’s one thing that hasn’t changed: the sacred ritual of gift-giving. While we might not be able to gather in the same way for the 2020 holiday season, we can still let the people in our lives know how much they mean to us with the perfect gift (and maybe get ourselves something nice while we’re at it—we deserve it).
We here at Den of Geek believe there is no better gift than a good book and, with nerd culture still very much mainstream culture, there is no shortage of geeky books to get the nerd in your life. From Star Wars and Star Trek to Outlander and Wheel of Time to those speculative fiction books that broke into the zeitgeist this year without a franchise to support them, here’s a list of...

After bursting onto the scene and winning an Academy Award for co-writing Good Will Hunting alongside longtime best friend Matt Damon while the two were still in their 20s, Ben Affleck quickly shot to the top of the Hollywood A-list, but over the next decade, a string of disappointing movies saw the actor much more likely to feature on the front pages of the tabloids than at the top of the box office.
With his star fading, Affleck decided to step behind the camera, leading to a massive career reinvention as a critically-acclaimed filmmaker that a lot of people never saw coming. His debut flick, Gone Baby Gone showed huge promise, but it was follow-up The Town that fully established him as a genuine talent with a bright future as a director.

Exclusive: Filmula Entertainment has acquired rights to historian James L. Swanson’s upcoming book Lion In Winter, about America’s most prolific Chicago Outfit syndicate mob boss and a key henchman in the infamous “Capone massacres.” The book will be adapted into a feature film by Chuck Hogan, who penned the screenplay for Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, co-created The Strain with Guillermo del Toro and wrote the book on which Ben Affleck’s 2010 film The Town was based.
The subject matter in the book, due to be published in 2020, is under wraps, but we understand its is based on a true story about a criminal who has never been caught. It is being described as an ambitious ensemble piece covering the lives of up-and-coming hitmen, next in line to the title character’s aging, relentless syndicate murderer in an untold tale of American history.

Nat Geo has picked up The Hot Zone, a scripted series based on Richard Preston’s bestseller about the Ebola virus and its impact on the human race, from executive producer Ridley Scott, Lynda Obst Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios.
The Hot Zone recounts the terrifying true story of the origins of Ebola, a deadly and highly infectious virus from the central African rainforest, and its first arrival on U.S. soil. In 1989, when this killer suddenly appeared in chimpanzees in a scientific lab in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., there was no known cure. A heroic U.S. Army veterinarian working with a secret military Swat team put herself in mortal peril when she tried to head off the outbreak before it spread to the human population.
Nat Geo also confirmed three new projects in development including Hidden Figures, which Deadline previously reported was in early development, inspired by the Oscar-nominated film.

Fear can pop up anywhere, anytime, for any reason. Maybe you’re terrified of clowns or spiders or light switches. Maybe those triggers, if dwelled on just long enough, can cause a bead of sweat to roll down your brow or a jolt of panic to shoot through your veins. Everyone has that one thing (or a dozen) that gets under their skin.
The best horror shows don’t just recognize and emphasize these fears; they create new ones. They draw out those things that make an audience uncomfortable. They hone in on weaknesses, push them to the forefront of your mind, and contort them to nightmarish new levels.
Suddenly, you’re not thinking about your weird, childhood aversion to the switch that makes the lights go out; you’re worried about getting sucked into the Upside Down by a demogorgan or a serial killer wrapping you up in a...

The world of The Strain just can’t catch a break. Originally created by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan in a trilogy of horror novels that were published between 2009 and 2011, the characters have to contend with a killer vampire virus that’s slowly infecting planet Earth and knocking regular homo sapiens a couple of notches down the food chain. That’d be bad enough, but the end of season 3 saw a global thermonuclear apocalypse being added to the list of problems.
The resulting nuclear winter blotted out the sun, which is literally the last thing you want to happen when you’re living on a planet full of vampires – known in the series as strigoi. Nine months later, as season 4 opens, the strigoi are essentially running the world, with big baddie the Master establishing a totalitarian regime blood-fuelled regime known as “The Partnership,” all propped up by an enslaved human underclass.
