The Fever (Maya Da-Rin)
The Fever, director-cum-visual artist Da-Rin’s first full-length feature project, puts a human face to a statistic that hardly captures the genocide Brazil is suffering. This is not just a wonderfully crafted, superb exercise in filmmaking, a multilayered tale that seesaws between social realism and magic. It is a call to action, an unassuming manifesto hashed in the present tense but reverberating as a plea from a world already past us, a memoir of sorts. – Leonardo G. (full review)

Kevin Guthrie, who starred in the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, has been sentenced to three years in jail for sexually assaulting a woman. The 33-year-old Scottish actor, who played Abernathy in the two Harry Potter prequels, was found guilty after a four-day trial and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, BBC News recently reported. The outlet said he had denied the charge and told the jury he had only "helped" the woman, 29, after she fell ill. Guthrie has not commented on his sentence. The court was told the incident took place in 2017 at the apartment of fellow Scottish actor Scott Reid, who was not charged. According to BBC News, the victim became sick on...

Kevin Guthrie, a Scottish actor known for his roles in the “Fantastic Beasts” films, “Dunkirk” and “Sunshine on Leith,” has been sentenced to three years in jail for sexually assaulting a woman in Glasgow.
Guthrie denied the charges, saying he had simply helped the woman after she fell ill, the BBC reports. However, his DNA was found inside her underwear. Following a four-day-trial, he was found guilty and placed on the sex offenders registry indefinitely.
The attack took place at the flat of fellow actor Scott Reid in September 2017. The court heard how a 29-year-old woman had plans to meet the pair at a bar before falling ill in a taxi on the way to the flat. According to BBC, Reid called an NHS helpline while Guthrie helped the woman inside and stayed behind to look after her. She told the court that she remembered being placed on the bed then having her top removed.

Concrete Plans is a thriller from South Wales. This is director William Jewell's first feature as director. And, his story involves a rugged crew of builders and their growing frustration over non-payment. The builders take things into their own hands and turn on the person who hired them, leading to even more challenges. The cast for Concrete Plans consists of: Goran Bogdan ("Fargo"), Kevin Guthrie (Fantastic Beasts), Chris Reilly and Amber Rose Revah. The film's U.S. poster and trailer are here, via Dark Sky Films. The U.S. poster looks more like a concept poster. However, the title is present, along with a few other characters. Very austere, this release poster leaves a bit to be desired. The trailer is a bit more eventful. Characters work on an old estate. As the costs for construction increase, the foreman must find a way to pay his labourers. A confrontation ensues leading to a death,...

"Gimme the money. I can kill ya and take it. Or I can just take it. It's your call..." Dark Sky has unveiled a new US trailer for the British thriller Concrete Plans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Will Jewell. This first premiered at Frightfest in the UK last year, and already opened over there last fall. High in the remote Welsh mountains, five builders are brought in to renovate a sprawling old farmhouse. When their employer tries to cheat them out of a job, this rugged crew of five workmen turn first on him then each other, leading to a bloody confrontation. Concrete Plans stars Goran Bogdan, Kevin Guthrie, Chris Reilly, Amber Rose Revah, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Steve Speirs, and William Thomas. This looks like it gets brutal fast, which it seems is the point of the plot as everything spirals out of control. Here's the official...

In this claustrophobic if unconvincing thriller, an arrogant landowner incurs the wrath of the builders renovating his ancestral home
There’s some really strong acting talent involved in this claustrophobic thriller set in south Wales, including the excellent Steve Speirs, who recently showed what a great comic turn he is as Burbage in Ben Elton’s Upstart Crow. But, however much I wanted to like it, this film never quite gelled: the dialogue and the confrontations seemed forced; some characters looked and sounded like caricatures; and the moment of escalation from tension into open violence was unconvincing.
Kevin Guthrie plays Simon, an arrogant landowner who is refurbishing the ancestral home as part of a colossal tax dodge on the advice of his slippery accountant Richard (James Lance). To do this, he has hired five builders: Bob (Speirs), Jim (Chris Reilly), Dave (William Thomas), Steve (Charley Palmer Rothwell) and Viktor (Goran Bogdan...

It's a key tenet of modern capitalism, yet there is still a good deal of controversy about the notion that wealth created by those with money and power trickles down to others at the bottom of the economic heap. One thing, however, is clear. When the wealthy screw up, misery trickles down easily.
Simon (Kevin Guthrie) is already in the process of renovating his old farm buildings when he hears that the regulators might be closing in on his offshore accounts. The builders are on site, making measurements and unloading supplies. They've been asking about their money. He tells them it will take a few days, but they're clearly not satisfied. They don't trust him, or men of his class generally. What can you say about a man who offers you accommodation in a nice cosy barn only to rescind that offer at the last minute because he's decided it's too.

Five misfit builders coming together to work on a farmhouse in some remote Welsh mountains don’t seem like the basis for a horror film. But Concrete Plans, a very British movie, is exactly that and although it takes a little while to get there, there is plenty of horror to witness.
The five workers might be a little stereotypical but are the perfect ‘gang’ for this movie. You have the arrogant youngster who is being badly influenced by an older bigoted guy. The Ukrainian guy who just wants to work but is constantly antagonised by that pair. While we have the older guy who just wants to get on with work but will defend any prejudices he sees. And lastly, we have the foreman...

The influential power of Danny Boyle’s drug-freakout cult classic “Trainspotting” is alive and well for a generation of filmmakers even 25 years later, and its legacy as an Add-addled dark comedy is most recently apparent in “Get Duked!” The feature directorial debut of music video and short filmmaker Ninian Doff, originally going by the vexing title of “Boyz in the Wood,” is a high-energy four-hander about a group of teens who set out into the Scottish Highlands on a camping competition trip. And its energy is perhaps too high, bouncing from one set piece to another so much that it becomes almost dizzying. But that’s fitting for a movie about a quartet of Generation Zers stuck in the wilderness and deprived of their smartphones. Still, Patient, slow cinema this is not.
“Get Duked!” gets off to an immediately overcaffeinated start, and pretty much maintains that level of energy, as...

"You won't get away with this!" Amazon Prime Video has released an official trailer for an indie highlands comedy titled Get Duked!, which won the Midnighters Audience Award at last year's SXSW Film Festival. Formerly known as Boyz in the Wood, it has been given a new title for its US release this month. Set deep in the Scottish Highlands, the film follows wild teenage friends out on a character-building camping trip. With plans to do nothing but get high in the woods, the boys must face a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures. From writer-director Ninian Doff comes an anarchic satire of generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers and hallucinogenic rabbit droppings that pits the youth of tomorrow against the status quo of yesterday. Starring Samuel Bottomley, Rian Gordon, Lewis Gribben, Viraj Juneja, Kate Dickie, Kevin Guthrie, Jonathan Aris, Georgia Glen, Alice Lowe, Brian Pettifer, with James Cosmo and Eddie Izzard.

Eager to cut loose and smoke weed in the Scottish Highlands, the trio finds themselves paired with straight-laced Ian, a fellow camper determined to play by the rules. After veering off-path into remote farmland that’s worlds away from their urban comfort zone, the boys find themselves hunted down by a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures.

British actor George Blagden, who played Louis Xiv in period drama “Versailles,” has been cast opposite Belarussian actress and model Caterina Shulha (“Hotel Gagarin”) in “The Land of Dreams,” an English-language movie musical set in 1920s New York being produced by Italy’s Leone Film Group for the international market.
Shooting has just started at Bulgaria’s Nu Boyana Film Studios on the ambitious and unusual pic being directed by Italian newcomer Nicola Abbatangelo. Producer Marco Belardi, who heads Leone group’s Lotus Production shingle, decided to take a gamble on the project after being impressed by a 20-minute short directed by Abbatangelo, which the feature will expand on.

Marilyn Edmond’s film is a well-meaning but unconvincing dramatisation of the problems of loneliness and suicide among men under 45 in the UK
In a tiny, relentlessly picturesque coastal Scottish town, shy young Brian (Kevin Guthrie) is a good-looking chap with a steady job in an ironmongers. He’s got a reasonably affectionate family living nearby and seems to have a few friends – or at least one, in the shape of co-worker Gavin (Cameron Fulton), a queeny quipper who is possibly the only gay person in the village.
However, Brian is desperately lonely, tortured by suicidal thoughts and unable to share his troubles with anyone around him. One night, just as he is on the verge of jumping off a cliff on to the rocks below, a kindly stranger, Jeff (Stephen McCole), pulls him away from the edge, literally and metaphorically. A bitter, proud Scottish widow decides to tick an important item off her bucket list before moving into a retirement home in “Edie,” an uneven dramedy from U.K. commercials helmer Simon Hunter, working from a screenplay by Elizabeth O’Halloran that has a big problem in tone and beaucoup clichéd contrivance. While there’s drama aplenty in the notion that octogenarian Edie Moore (the superb Sheila Hancock) yearns to climb Mount Suilven, in the Highlands, the filmmakers too often undermine the dignity of their appealing protagonist with crude slapstick. Hancock makes a determined heroine who deserves better than the knockabout and patronizing treatment her character suffers. The only thing that does not disappoint is the ravishing and varied landscape, even if it is shot a bit like a tourist board advertisement.

Facing expulsion, three city youths are offered an ultimatum: complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award in the Scottish Highlands and retain their places at school. While their teacher (Jonathan Aris) takes the minibus to the first night’s campsite, Dean (Rian Gordon), Duncan (Lewis Gribben) and DJ Beetroot (Viraj Juneja) are left to their own devices — or rather, to those of Ian (Samuel Bottomley), the only member of the troupe who actually volunteered to be there or who is prepared accordingly. Just miles into the journey however, the boys find themselves off piste and at the mercy of a pair of masked psychopaths — one of them disguised as the Duke of Edinburgh himself.

A group of youngsters stuck in the Scottish countryside become the hunted in Ninian Doff’s wacky mashup
Music video director Ninian Doff makes his feature debut with this cheerfully macabre folk horror-comedy set in the rural wilderness. Very often, comedy-horror is a tricky style with each of the two notional genres being alibis for the other’s absence: ie, neither funny nor scary. Not here, though. Boyz in the Wood isn’t perfect (there isn’t really a wood in it as such and the title is a bit strained), but there’s likable wackiness and weirdness, one or two sizable laughs and a very bizarre deus ex machina moment. Doff has mashed up bits of Trainspotting with The League of Gentlemen and some grisly imaginings of his own.

[Note: With the film now out to buy, here’s a reposting of our review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald from its UK cinema release]
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the pinnacle of what is wrong with the modern day blockbuster. The second of an intended five installment franchise in J.K. Rowling’s prequel series to the enormously critically acclaimed and well-received Harry Potter franchise, the film showcases the delinquency behind such a saga which has already buckled under the enormous pressure of anticipation and efficient story.
David Yates film undoubtedly wears a docile heart on its bland sleeve. It has moments through its running time that evoke a semi-engaging emotional provocation: through small incidents of character and relative significance of political ignorance, that unfortunately plagues the audience after the fact.

The latest featurette for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes the opportunity to show us a few of the ways that Fantastic Beasts connects to the Harry Potter franchise, which is what started all of us on this exciting magical adventure. I also included a new international trailer.

“This wizarding world that J.K. Rowling’s created is so rich and vast from Harry Potter to Fantastic Beasts. There are so many connections between characters and storylines, past and present, and so many secrets yet to be revealed.”

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

To celebrate #BackToHogwarts Day tomorrow, J.K. Rowling is joined by the cast and crew of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to reminisce over their favourite Hogwarts memories in this brand new featurette.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MacUsa (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.
