Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Swan Song, the ballet-themed documentary that will open Lincoln Center’s 52nd Dance on Camera Festival Friday evening.
The film – a Dogwoof, Visitor Media, Mercury Films, and Quiet Ghost production, directed and co-written by Chelsea McMullan – premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival. Greenwich plans to release Swan Song in theaters in the fall.
“Swan Song immerses viewers inside one of the world’s leading ballet companies as it mounts a legacy-defining new production of Swan Lake, directed by ballet icon Karen Kain on the eve of her retirement,” notes a description of the film. “The verité-driven feature documentary closely follows Kain and a group of young dancers drawn from the National Ballet of Canada’s ranks, weaving Swan Lake’s dramatic creation process with intimate scenes from the subjects’ personal lives as they push toward one of...

Neve Campbell is attending the Toronto International Film Festival — not as an actress but in her capacity of producer of “Swan Song”, the Chelsea McMullan-directed documentary taking viewers inside the National Ballet of Canada’s 2022 production of “Swan Lake”, directed and staged by the legendary Karen Kain.
“Karen Kain was my idol. She is the one of the reasons I became an artist”
Campbell spoked with Et Canada’s Sangita Patel, who asked her if, now that she’d produced, she might next have her eye on directing.
“You know, it’s interesting. I was just offered to direct something and I read it, but I’m not going to do it,” she said.
“I realize, you know, you have to, if you’re going to direct, because it takes so much more time than acting, because pre-production, post-production, the whole thing,” she continued. “You have to love it.

“Scream” star Neve Campbell has boarded the Toronto Film Festival-bound documentary “Swan Song,” about the National Ballet of Canada, as an executive producer.
Campbell, who is Canadian, is expected to attend Toronto in support of the film, which follows the ballet company as it mounts a new production of “Swan Lake” directed by ballet icon Karen Kain on the eve of her retirement.
The documentary will screen as part of the festival’s Special Presentations program. TIFF announced its official lineup on Monday, promising an array of world premiere titles despite the SAG-AFTRA actors strike, which will likely impede its red carpets.
“Swan Song” is directed by Chelsea McMullan, who wrote the film with producer Sean O’Neill. Distributed in Canada by Blue Ice Docs, with international sales handled by Dogwoof, the documentary will be released theatrically in Canada on Sept. 22. The project was developed with CBC and will air as...

The Toronto Intl. Film Festival’s Docs program gets underway Sept. 8 and will feature 22 nonfiction films — a hefty 57 increase from last year’s lineup, which was cut back to 14 due to Covid.
Notable titles include Oscar winner Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” which is pictured above and making its Canadian premiere following a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival; “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s latest docu “The Grab” and veteran filmmaker’s Werner Herzog’s “Theatre of Thought.”
Sacha Jenkins’s “Armstrong’s Black & Blues” will serve as TIFF Docs’ opening film.
Thom Powers, lead TIFF documentary programmer, winnowed the list of 22 from 700 submissions. While constructing this year’s program, Powers noticed various themes emerge across submissions, one being being the act of resistance.

"Gender" and "genre" share a common root in the Latin "genus." It means "kind" or "type" or "sort" and that's how both gender and genre function. They allow us to classify things. They give us categories into which we believe it's easy and beneficial to slot plants, animals, people, literary forms. Gender and genre are systems through which we think we've made it simpler to view the world. Of course, very few classification systems work all the time. The slippery slope at the intersection of gender and genre is at the center of Chelsea McMullan's "My Prairie Home," which...

Chelsea McMullan‘s debut feature documentary, My Prairie Home, is a different sort of trip through the Canadian West. It’s a nonfiction portrait of a musician, singer/songwriter Rae Spoon, but it goes beyond the biographical details and the concert footage. Every documentary is a collaboration between filmmaker and subject to some degree, but in this case the combination of talents and ideas is even more obvious. Somewhere between biography and visual album, My Prairie Home fuses McMullan’s skill and Spoon’s musical style into a singularly beautiful journey through the occasionally unfriendly but often breathtaking air of Alberta. The film is built primarily from a trip across the Prairie, following Spoon as they take Greyhound from gig to gig. There are a number of visual motifs that return time and again along the way, most notably the persistence of indecision in front of public washrooms. Spoon is transgender and uses the pronoun “they.” This...

Sundance Film Festival continues to be one of the most popular, and arguably one of the most important, events on the industry calendar, launching as it does some of the most prominent independent films at the start of each year.
This year will be no different, with Sundance announcing last night the initial line-up of films screening in competition, led by Song One, starring Anne Hathaway; Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart; Infinitely Polar Bear, with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana; Joe Swanberg’s Happy Christmas, starring Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, and Swanberg himself; The Skeleton Twins, with Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, and Ty Burrell; Life After Beth, with Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, and John C. While the U.S. Documentary Competition is generally known for it’s politically charged intensity, the World Cinema Documentary Competition tends to be a little more well rounded. Rather than bluntly educating and strongly suggesting, the imports are often more observational in their approach, asking us to engage and form our own opinions on the subjects, or often the cultures, presented. Think last year’s Best Director Award winner The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear by Tinatin Gurchiani, or Qi Zhao’s Fallen City as prime examples, but let’s not forget there are also films of social urgency, such as Jehane Noujaim’s The Square, which just made the Oscar docu short list this week. This year’s programme looks no less diverse.
