On a pitch-black evening, on the anniversary of Ye’s, (f.k.a. Kanye West), monumental classic debut The College Dropout, fans from all over endured a nasty mix of thunder, rain, and hail to hear Yeezy and Ty Dolla Sign’s collaborative effort, Vultures before the rest of the world at the United Center in his Chicago kingdom.

St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn was full of good vibes and a spirit of musical collaboration on Nov. 10, as two pairs of unique talents — Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack, and Jon Batiste and Gucci Mane — took the stage for Rolling Stone’s first-ever Musicians on Musicians live event. There was laughter, honesty, and even a couple surprise performances, including a haunting solo-piano version of a Gucci Mane hit.

Musician John Legend had to strike a deal with porn producer Johnny Legend before he could use his stage name. The 44-year-old ‘So High’ crooner was originally named John Roger Stephens and, when he decided he wanted to adopt the performing moniker ‘Legend’ after advice from Kanye West and poet J Ivy, he discovered he’d have to clear the trademark with the adult film boss.
“I was born John Stevens. A friend of mine started calling me John Legend. Kanye kind of blew it up when he put it on one of his recordings,” he said on an upcoming episode of ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’.
“When I was deciding whether to go out as John Legend or John Stevens, it’ll make a statement before I even show up. Then I found out someone is called Johnny Legend – he was a porn producer. I’ve never met him before.

On the eve of the 65th Grammy Awards, Nashville-based Tennessee State University’s Aristocrat of Bands was in Atlanta to compete at the Hbcu All-Star Battle of the Bands against schools like North Carolina A&t, Alabama State, and Bethune-Cookman. The student musicians took the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for their turn and, before their high-stepping performance began, they quickly formed into the shape of a Grammy statuette.
It was a mighty flex, but they were certainly the only band in the building who could say they had a Grammy nomination.

Kanye West has become possibly the world’s most famous and revered rap star, dominating headlines with his music and his personal life. But there was a time – hard as it is to imagine – when he was pegged as “just” a great record producer, and not a performer in his own right.
The Netflix docuseries Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy dials back to that time when Ye (as he calls himself now) struggled to be taken seriously as a solo artist. The series is directed by Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, who made some of West’s most important music videos. Simmons grew up in Chicago, as did Kanye, and began shooting video of West back in the late 1990s, well before the rapper released his first solo album.

LeVar Burton will host the Grammys’ “premiere ceremony,” the pre-telecast afternoon event during which the vast majority of winners will be announced April 3.
The Grammys-before-the-Grammys will get underway at the the MGM Grand Conference Marquee Ballroom in Las Vegas at 12:30 p.m. Pt/3:30 Et. The early unveiling of winners be available for streaming on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel as well as at live.grammy.com.
With fewer than 20 categories typically being announced on the air during the prime-time CBS telecast, that means more than three-quarters of the night’s 86 winners will likely be announced during the afternoon event.
A number of performances will be sprinkled into the premiere ceremony, as is customary, with country star and best new artist nominee Jimmie Allen and thrice-nominated Americana artist Allison Russell among those set to lend a tune in the ballroom. Fellow nominees Ledisi, Mon Laferte and Curtis Stewart will perform as well.

“Tonight is not about Yeezus. It’s about Jesus,” said DeVon Franklin, the TV and film producer, bestselling author and VP of the Motion Picture Academy’s board of governors, introducing a panel at NeueHouse in Hollywood this week. It was both, of course, as the event he was leading was sponsored by Netflix and at least ostensibly in the service of promoting discussion about “Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy,” the three-part documentary about hip-hop titan Kanye West that just rolled out over three weeks on the streaming service. Franklin wasn’t being misleading, though: Yahweh mentions did at least slightly beat out Ye shout-outs during the two-hour discussion, although there was no mistaking that the promise of discussing pop culture’s most polarizing figure was the chief lure for the members of L.A.’s Black church community that primarily made up the full house.

Days before its official release, Netflix has unveiled the full trailer of the Kanye West documentary “jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy.” But unlike the initial teaser released last month, this new, full look gives a preview of all three parts of West’s epic journey.
“When I first put the camera on this up-and-coming producer back in ’98, I knew he was destined for greatness. The goal would be to see how long his dreams would take him. But I had no idea where life would take us next,” the film’s director and narrator Clarence “Coodie” SImmons” says in the new trailer. “It felt like the bigger Kanye got, the farther we grew apart. But there was more to Kanye’s story I needed to tell.”
The first part of the seven-hour documentary series looked at West’s struggles trying to make it as a rapper in Chicago, and in Todd Gilchrist...

President Barack Obama, LeVar Burton and Dave Chappelle are among the nominees for Best Spoken Word Album at the 64th annual Grammy Awards, which were announced this morning. Also up for the prize are 10-time Emmy nominee Don Cheadle and poet/hip hop artist J. Ivy.
The nom for A Promised Land is the third in the category for Obama and his first in 13 years. He won both previous times, for his audiobooks Dreams from My Father in 2006 and The Audacity of Hope (2008) — the wins coming before he was elected as Commander in Chief.
Up for the audiobook Aftermath, Burton also is a previous Spoken Word winner, snagging the 2000 prize for audiobook The Autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr. That was the Jeopardy! fill-in and newly minted Trivial Pursuit host’s only previous Grammy nomination.

Wait, John Legend isn't his real name? That's right! During the March 1 episode of The Tonight Show, the Egot winner told the true story as to how John Roger Stevens, his birth name, became a "Legend." "It was a nickname that some friends started calling me in the studio, just guys that I was collaborating with," he explained to host Jimmy Fallon. "The first guy to call me that was J. Ivy. He's a spoken-word artist from Chicago. As John explained to Jimmy, he met J. Ivy through Kanye West. He went on to add, "We were all in the studio together. He just started calling me 'The Legend' because he thought I sounded like one of our old-school soul...
