Exclusive: National Geographic is wading into one of psychology’s most debated studies from the past 50 years. The network has given a green light to The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth (wt), a three-part docuseries from Juliette Eisner, Alex Braverman and Muck Media, the producers behind Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.
Led by Stanford psychology professor Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, the six-day Stanford Prison Experiment was Zimbardo’s attempt to understand the power of situation over human behavior. In 1971, Zimbardo paid two dozen college-aged participants to live in a mock prison, observing how randomly assigned “prisoner” and “guard” roles influenced behavior. What started out as a self-contained university experiment turned into a media spectacle that captured the imagination and attention of the world, defining our understanding of human nature and forever changing the course of psychology.

A kind word from Christopher Nolan meant everything to David Krumholtz circa 2007 and beyond. It’s a story that sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne’s final admission to Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, as you never know just how impactful a random act of kindness can be for someone else. Roughly 17 years ago, the now Oscar-winning filmmaker was scouting for The Dark Knight at Los Angeles Center Studios, and Krumholtz happened to be there, shooting Numbers. That’s when Nolan approached the actor and paid him an unexpected compliment regarding his performance as mathematical genius Charlie Eppes on the hit CBS show.
From there, Krumholtz couldn’t help but hold out hope that Nolan would cast him someday, and the opportunity finally came in the form of Oppenheimer’s Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and endearingly loyal friend to J. Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer...

A catchy nickname for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer crew has emerged during awards season: the Oppenhomies. During his acceptance speech for best actor at Saturday’s SAG Awards, Cillian Murphy made sure to give credit where it’s due by revealing the specific Oppenhomie who came up with it.
“Just an Fyi on that exquisite moniker, Oppenhomies, that was actually invented by the great Olivia Thirlby,” Murphy said of the actress who plays Lilli Hornig in Nolan’s epic about American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the events surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb. “So Olivia, I think you should immediately trademark that and start merching the shit out of it because someone else will.”
Murphy then got serious by calling his peers “the greatest group of actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” It’s a long and impressive list, too, that includes Emily Blunt,...

Universal’s Oppenheimer took took the top prize at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning best cast in a film — while also taking the prizes for lead and supporting actor.
Cillian Murphy won best actor for his role as in the eponymous scientist who led the Manhattan Project’s creation of the atomic bomb. He thanked his costars — his “Oppenhomies,” quoting costar Olivia Thirlby — and the larger acting community. “Twenty years ago, when I was trying to become an actor, I was a failed musician and I felt extremely like an interloper,” Murphy recalled. “But now, looking out at all of you guys here today, I know that I’m part of something truly wonderful.”
Lily Gladstone won best actress for Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and opened her acceptance speech by thanking her fellow SAG members for their solidarity during last year’s strike. “This has been...

If you haven’t been following him on Twitter, David Krumholtz has been one of the very few reasons to stay up to date on the happenings of that godforsaken site, sharing gloriously told tales of his time in Hollywood. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a towering achievement. Ambitious, thoughtful, and often frightening, it’s one part biopic, one part cautionary tale, and one part lament for a world in which humanity’s most brilliant moments of creation are also inevitable acts of destruction. Grounded in a sensational central performance from star Cillian Murphy and an unflinchingly vivid directorial vision, it snagged 13 Oscar nominations and deserved every one. It’s not perfect, by any means, but it’s a sprawling, cerebral reminder of what blockbuster filmmaking looks like on almost every level. It’s probably going to win Best Picture, and it’s hard to argue that any other movie that came out last year can—or likely should—beat it.
It’s precisely because Oppenheimer is such a genuinely great film that its most glaring flaw feels all the more frustrating. If Nolan and...

In an ideal world, Netflix's weekly Top 10 would make it easier for films that didn't deserve to flop at the box office to connect with viewers. That's not the case, of course. Instead, the streamer's weekly list of its most-watched films is typically dominated by oddities or forgettable genre movies from years past. Every once in a while, however, the Netflix algorithm gets it right and either breathes fresh life into a treasured gem or, in this week's case, further affirms a film's well-earned cult status.

What a year it’s been for David Krumholtz. In 2023, the actor has added a Tony-winning play (Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt) and a box-office sensation (you know which one) to his resumé. In both cases that affable face, so often in the margins, nudged toward center stage. Krumholtz goes one further with deadbeat comedy Lousy Carter, a premiere last week in competition at the Locarno Film Festival wherein the actor plays a graduate lecturer who learns he has six months to live and decides to try seducing a student. It’s less creepy than it sounds and, at its best, it’s all his.

This year marks 30 years since Bob Byington’s first feature, though it’s only during the last 15 of those — since SXSW midnight-movie breakout “Rso: Registered Sex Offender” — that the Austin-based director has enjoyed “indie darling” status. During that same stretch, the cultural discourse has changed a great deal, while Byington’s voice remains remarkably (if somewhat frustratingly) consistent, churning out self-deprecating feature-length sitcoms about flaccid man-babies. Those aren’t the kind of movies American festivals are looking for so much anymore, which could explain why his latest, “Lousy Carter,” wound up premiering abroad, at the Locarno Film Festival.
Locarno’s programmers typically gravitate toward austere, experimental and/or formally audacious works of cinema. “Lousy Carter” is none of these things, but neither is it lousy. That unfortunate moniker belongs to the film’s lead character, a lumpy failed animator turned tenured literature professor, who’s rendered all the more pathetic...

[Editor’s Note: This post contains minor spoilers for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”]
In April 2022, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film, an adaptation of the iconic Mattel doll line starring Margot Robbie, set its release date for July 21, 2023. The date, as many immediately pointed out, was already the release date of Christopher Nolan’s next film, “Oppenheimer,” a biopic of the creator of the atomic bomb, featuring Cillian Murphy in the title role.
Both films had already been linked together for some (specifically the very online); during the early months of 2022, when they were finalizing casting, it became a Twitter joke that pretty much every performer in Hollywood was in one of the two film’s gigantic ensembles. Add in some real-world drama involving Nolan’s messy split from Warner Bros., the same company releasing “Barbie,” and soon “Barbenheimer” was born: a jokey rivalry between the two very different features, which eventually evolved into a viral trend of people booking themselves...

Christopher Nolan is getting a big endorsement for Oppenheimer from Paul Schrader who is praising his latest film.
In a post on Facebook, the Taxi Driver screenwriter and American Gigolo director shared a photo alongside Nolan giving high marks to the movie about the atomic bomb.
“Oppenheimer. The best, most important film of this century,” Schrader wrote. “If you see one film in cinemas this year it should be Oppenheimer. I’m not a Nolan groupie but this one blows the doors off the hinges.”
Oppenheimer has already been getting positive reactions from film critics following its multiple screenings.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited as the “father of the atomic bomb.” The film is directed and written by Nolan and is based on “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Actor Elliot Page revealed another bombshell in his new memoir, ‘Pageboy’ as he claimed that he and his ‘Juno’ co-star Olivia Thirlby “started having sex all the time” following an intense makeout session while filming the 2007 movie.
Elliot revealed that he was “taken aback the moment I saw” Olivia, per The Daily Beast.
‘The Umbrella Academy’ star said in his book that they “stood in her hotel room” with Billie Holiday playing in the background, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Olivia allegedly was “about to start making lunch, when she looked directly at me and said point-blank, ‘I’m really attracted to you'”.
After Elliot told her that he was “really attracted” to her too, they “started sucking face”. “It was on… we started having sex all the time: her hotel room, in our trailers at work, once in a tiny, private room in a restaurant.”
“We thought we were being subtle.

You might want to leave the kiddies at home for Christopher Nolan’s next epic because Oppenheimer is officially rated R. The mature rating marks Nolan’s first R rating since 2002’s Insomnia, the crime thriller starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank.
In addition to revealing the film’s rating, details about Oppenheimer’s film reels are making the rounds online. The film clocks in at nearly three hours, making it the director’s most extended feature. According to The Associated Press, IMAX prints of Oppenheimer are “11 miles of film stock” that “weigh some 600 pounds.” Nolan shot the movie in a large format, with IMAX screenings ranging from 70mm to IMAX digital, 35mm, Dolby Cinema, and more.
Nolan wants fans to know that the “best possible experience” for watching Oppenheimer is through the IMAX 70mm film format. However, only 25 theaters across North America provide audiences with that option.

Christopher Nolan's new film "Oppenheimer," due in theaters on July 21, 2023, is a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the chief scientists behind the development of the atomic bomb. Given the subject matter, and Nolan's penchant for low, sustained booming noises, one might already feel a pang of sympathy for audiences watching "Barbie" in the multiplex theater next door.
"Oppenheimer" famously stars just about every actor who has ever worked with Nolan in the past, and maybe another 50 for good measure. At last count, "Oppenheimer" will feature Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Robert Downey, Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Olivia Thirlby, Matthew Modine, Laurence Olivier, Bennie Safdie, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Alden Ehrenreich, Divine, Peter Ustinov, and Tony Goldwyn. Three of those, I just made up.
In the title role is Cillian Murphy, Nolan's secret weapon, who has previously appeared in "Dunkirk," "Inception," and his three "Batman" movies.

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

Who could've seen this coming? The filmmaker continually obsessed with exploring the nature of time is now making a movie about a literal ticking time bomb. After exploring time-dilation effects in deep space with "Interstellar," crafting a complicated series of intersecting timelines in the World War II epic "Dunkirk," and then tackling a form of time-travel in the ridiculously bonkers "Tenet," Christopher Nolan is now taking on the incredibly sobering historical tale about the creation of the atom bomb. The biopic will revolve around the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist chiefly responsible for the research and development of the Manhattan Project and who famously quoted from the Hindu "Bhagavad Gita" upon the detonation of the deadly weapons of mass destruction: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
While World War II remains familiar territory for Nolan, a biopic based on a significant historical figure certainly isn't.

When a movie is initially released, it feels like its financial performance is the biggest measuring stick to determine its success. But we have countless examples of films that failed in their day only to become stone-cold classics that had a rich life well beyond their opening weekend. Let us never forget that "The Thing" and "Blade Runner" both had to open against "E.T." but they were not lost to the sands of time. But sometimes, the sting of failure cuts deeper because absolutely everything seemed right, and yet, it doesn't click with moviegoers. Such was the case with 2012's "Dredd," a movie so good that its relative disappointment still hurts a full decade later.

John Landgraf, the chairman of FX, says he canceled “Y: The Last Man” after just one season because “its audience decline was really, really, really steep.”
“One of the key things we assess — and we have assessed for as long as we’ve been doing this — is the trajectory of a television show across a season from its first to its last episode,” Landgraf said of the one-and-done FX on Hulu series.
“I really loved ‘Y: The Last Man’ personally…but I will tell you that its audience decline was really, really, really steep,” he added. “And ultimately that’s what made us go that direction.”
TheWrap reached out to FX to request a look at those audience declines, but we did not immediately hear back. The show only streamed on Hulu, which makes viewership numbers harder to come by.

"So many of you have been so supportive of the show, and I am so grateful to you,” she continued.
“I love the group of artists who made Y truly, madly, deeply. It was the best creative work environment I’ve ever been a part of."
"I am immensely proud of the work that we did… I hope you will still watch the show. That you’ll still tell your friends to watch it.

For fans of Y: The Last Man, it’s truly the end of their world. Showrunner/EP Eliza Clark has posted that the dystopian drama hasn’t been able to find new distribution.
“For those of you who have been asking me: we tried really hard to get another platform to pick up season 2 of Y,” Clark wrote on Twitter. “But sadly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It is always incredibly difficult to move a show, and in recent years, it has only gotten harder.”
Y: The Last Man is a post-apocalyptic drama developed by Clark based on the comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. In the series, a cataclysmic event decimates everyone but one cisgender male, Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer), and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle...

Alas, poor Yorick, we hardly knew ya.
The Season 1 (series?) finale of Y: The Last Man hit FX on Hulu Monday, and despite the major twists and turns it took, it’s all a bit bittersweet, isn’t it? On Oct. 17, news broke that the series would no longer continue at its current streamer, but that showrunner/executive producer Eliza Clark wasn’t giving up just yet. “We are committed to finding Y its next home,” she wrote at the time. (More details on that here.)
