Reggae artist Matisyahu has had the House of Blues in Chicago cancel his scheduled performance Friday because of the “threat of protests.”
Matisyahu said that House of Blues had canceled the show and paid the contractual penalty, which he promised to donate to an organization that advocates for the Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
The Chicago date is the third cancellation for Matisyahu on his current U.S. tour. Previous dates in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Tucson, Arizona were also pulled.
In Los Angeles, Jewish author Brett Gelman and TV personality Mayim Bialik also had events canceled or interrupted because of their outspoken support for Israel.
Matisyahu has been outspoken in his support for Israel, and has performed for troops there.
“While my fans and I are deeply hurt by this, please know we will not cower to these bullies and the pressure they exert,” said a statement from Matisyahu.

Under a starry western sky last weekend, Park City Song Summit founder Ben Anderson stood onstage and held court in front of an audience of creatives.
“We’re going to change the legacy and culture of music on this mountain,” Anderson howled into the evening chill, his voice echoing far and wide into the surrounding high-desert peaks of Utah. Then he dove headlong into a rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

It’s just after 7 p.m. on a warm Saturday evening. The sun’s dipping over the horizon, and throngs of people move excitedly to the front of the open-air stage. Ayokay is crooning in the background, performing his single Sleepless Nights to an excited audience. The cacophony of laughter, iced drinks clinking in cocktail glasses and and electronic tunes take over the atmosphere — this is what an evening at The Surf Lodge in Montauk is like.

Will Eisner’s groundbreaking 1978 graphic novel A Contract With God is being developed into a stage musical featuring music by Sam Hollander, Lisa Loeb, Matisyahu, Ryan Miller and Jill Sobule.
Teg+, the recently launched venture of Broadway producer Vivek J. Tiwary, has acquired the stage rights, and Hollander, who has composed songs for Panic! At The Disco, One Direction and Katy Perry, will serve as music producer.
Teg+ is currently in the process of securing a book writer for the musical adaptation.
First published in 1978, A Contract With God is considered a pioneering effort in the history of graphic novels, and consists of four interweaving stories revolving chronicling the lives of various New Yorkers — many Jewish and many immigrants — living in a fictional tenement house.

On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert kicked things off with a cold open gag inspired by the recent uproar over Spotify’s deal with podcaster Joe Rogan, because of the the huge amount of factually incorrect information about vaccines and Covid-19 featured on his show.
The gag was simple: A Spotify playlist where each selected song formed part of a sentence advancing lies about Covid-19 vaccines.
Of course, if you need a quick catch up: Last week Neil Young removed his music from Spotify in protest of Rogan. The same week, more than 200 scientists and medical experts released an open letter urging Spotify to quit promoting vaccine misinformation. And on Friday, Joni Mitchell announced she would be removing her music from Spotify to show solidarity with Young.
This has resulted in Spotify taking a huge stock market hit, and now it says it will add content warnings to podcasts touching on Covid.

Argentina’s Sebastian Schindel is venturing into unfamiliar territory with romcom-spy adventure hybrid “Mienteme” (“Lie to Me”), which he plans to shoot next year.
“Although most of my filmography falls into the “psychological thriller” genre, with a strong social context, what excites me most about making films is the possibility of exploring and experimenting in new areas,” said Schindel, adding: “I have always wanted to dive into the romantic comedy world for some time now, so ‘Mienteme’ is based on a cherished script I’ve been developing for the past few years.”
Schindel’s past films, including “The Crimes that Bind,” Argentina’s current submission to Spain’s Oscar equivalent, the Goyas, are screening on Netflix.
This time round, however, the Chilean-Argentine co-production has already been pre-financed through private equity and a Latin American distribution deal with Bf Paris, said co-producer-actor Lucas Akoskin. “We’d rather finance it through a...

The house that the New York Supreme Court deemed “as a matter of law, haunted,” is yet again on the market, for sale by its current owner, Matisyahu.
“Many buyers understandably don’t want to move in with a spirit or, if they’re skeptics, they just might not like living in a place that’s well-known in local lore to be haunted and could attract other gawkers. So maybe, if you’re selling the house, you just won’t tell the buyers! That’s what Helen Ackley thought when she sold her Nyack, New York home in 1989, and her failure to disclose her home’s history led to the infamous ‘Ghostbusters ruling.’ “

As the years go by, Dub Trio’s name feels less and less apt. While the group’s early work orbited around reggae, more recent releases have focused on crushing, riff-centric metal. “World of Inconvenience,” the lead single from the group’s new LP, The Shape of Dub to Come, draws on both styles to create a crafty, atmospheric hybrid.
Often instrumental, the group gets a vocal assist here from Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, whose inimitable bellow perfectly complements the track’s dark, dirge-like feel. Much as the group adds spacey,...

I’ve recently become infatuated with Netta Barzilai, the Israeli singer who won the Eurovision competition, held last week in Portugal, with her #Metoo inspired song “Toy.” It was the first time in 20 years that Israel had taken the top prize in the global contest, after dominating in the final years of the 1970s.
Of course, celebrating that winning moment back then, like now, comes with its own challenges. Namely, the seemingly unsolvable Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As an Israeli-American hip-hop artist, analyzing, debating and thinking about it is a constant, and nowhere more confrontational than on social media.
Earlier this week, I clicked on DJ Khaled’s Instagram and noticed a post which included the Dome of the Rock, the Muslim holy site in Jerusalem. The missive, which read: “praying for my people x praying for peace x praying for all my families, praying for everyone #world peace,” had much more...

Post-mortem exams following the unexpected death of Edm star Avicii have yielded “no criminal suspicion,” according to reports citing Oman police sources.
The Swedish star – real name Tim Bergling – died at a Muscat Hills resort yesterday at age 28. Two post-mortem examinations have been conducted so far, with authorities apparently ruling out foul play or other criminal activities.
His older brother, David, has arrived in Oman, reports state. Avicii had suffered from health issues that caused him in 2016 to announce his retirement from touring. Said problems included painful acute pancreatitis, a disease usually associated with excessive drinking. Avicii had his gallbladder and appendix removed.
Avicii still was involved in music, and his most recent single was a collaboration with Rita Ora, Lonely Together.
Fans have gathered in his native Stockholm for a memorial dance party for the DJ.

Matt Miller, aka Matisyahu has gone through some changes. Not since the Beatles traded their cherubic and cute mop tops and Cardin collarless suits for the transcendental look of facial hair and Nehru-psychedelic fashion has someone gone through a transformation so severe. You need only to Google “Matisyahu” to see the radical change that’s occurred over the years. Where The Beatle’s artistic growth was arguably fueled by copious amounts of psychedelics and the passion to exceed the technical limitations of their art, Matisyahu’s own “evolution” was a conscious decision to “reclaim” himself from a lifestyle and appearance that mirrored his “intuition.

"The Last Exorcism 2" hits theaters next Friday and if you're like us, you're probably thinking one thing: How can a movie called "The Last Exorcism" have a sequel? It's like the Hollywood equivalent of having 14 "Final Fantasy" games.
But the answer is simple: Exorcisms never really seem to work in movies. For over four decades, film fans have been going to the cineplex for one horror movie after another and the one thing you can pretty much always count on is the fact that when it comes time to try and exorcise a demon from a human host, that attempt will fail and fail miserably.
So with that in mind, we thought we'd take a look at the long and embarrassing history of failed exorcisms in film. And if you ever find yourself sharing space with a demonic interloper, well, you might as well just get used to it.

Chicago – In the last days of August 2012, three generically titled ghost pictures had the misfortune of opening at more or less the exact same time. None of them were particularly memorable, yet only one managed to produce any semblance of genuine chills. There are enough eerie moments in “The Possession,” the demonic thriller from gifted Danish director Ole Bornedal, that one wishes that it pushed past the boundaries of its tame PG-13 rating.
The script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White is a Judaic variation on “The Exorcist,” complete with a hasidic scholar barking out chants just like Max Von Sydow. The success of this formula succeeds or fails largely on the strength of its central performance from the possessed victim, which often takes the form of a young girl. “Exorcist” star Linda Blair set a spectacularly high bar that no imitator has been able to equal, and “The Possession”’s pint-sized leading lady,...

Following a first place finish at the box office, chatter has already begun on whether The Possession will garner an order for a sequel. This is hardly surprising, at this point. In an interview with MTV, Sam Raimi, the producer of the film, chatted about sequel possibilities:

Chicago – A film marketing itself as being “based on a true story” doesn’t hold the same teeth it once did. With truly original stories a financial high risk for Hollywood and many films leaning toward being based on a best-selling novel, the genre that is based on a true story or “inspired by true events” has increasingly taken creative liberties.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Beware, filmgoers. Just a nugget of truth doesn’t amount to a true gold rush. In the case of the new horror film “The Possession,” the only validity to this film’s claim of being based on a true story is that there was indeed a well-reported dybbuk box (also commonly spelled dibbuk). The story involved real people trying to offload it on eBay once it allegedly haunted them.
Today, most horror films claiming real-life truth aren’t really based on a true story or much of one.

This Labor Day weekend has been one of both big and small box office numbers. On the one side, there's The Avengers, which broke the $1.5 billion mark. On the other, there's children's film The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (from one of the geniuses behind the Teletubbies), which earned just $207-per-movie theater it opened in — the lowest haul in history. Meanwhile, Prohibition-era Lawless (featuring Jessica Chastain and Shia Labeouf) came in second place with $12 million, while the Exorcist-inspired horror flick The Possession opened first at $20 million (we think it was all Matisyahu's doing.) And, speaking of $20 million: that's about how much Dinesh D'Souza's conservative "documentary" 2016: Obama's America has earned so far.

Title: The Possession Director: Ole Bornedal Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport, Natasha Calis, Matisyahu, Grant Show A generally well orchestrated sense of moodiness outstrips any of the potential baser genre inclinations of “The Possession,” a supernatural thriller which tells the story of a young suburban girl in the throes of demonic control. Charting mostly familiar territory, director Ole Bornedal’s wintry chamber piece — based on a 2004 “Los Angeles Times” article by Leslie Gornstein — aims for a slowly escalating sense of tension before blowing its wad in rather customary fashion. Recent divorcées Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) are making a go of [ Read More ]...

What is it about kids that make them such great horror film villains? Their innocence? Their ability to release blood-curdling screams?"The Possession," which opens today, features one such creepy child. Natasha Calis plays Em, a fun-loving young girl who suddenly becomes detached and violent. Her parents (Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan) think the changes in her behavior are due to their divorce. However, Em's transformation is due to the influence of a dybbuk -- the Jewish word for dislocated spirit.Em becomes increasingly attached to the dybbuk box that houses the spirit and horrible things start to happen. It's up to Em's parents, her sister Hannah (Madison Davenport, the spitting image of a young Lindsay Lohan) and a rabbi's son named Tzadok (reggae star Matisyahu) to save her. Will Em go down as one of the creepiest kids in film? Check our our picks -- including Samara from...

If you find yourself trying to place that familiar face in The Possession, that's Jewish rap/reggae star Matisyahu performing the Jewish exorcism on a little girl who's been possessed by a Dybbuk (a demon that's been let out of a box meant to store it for eternity). If you're surprised that the musician is now acting, consider that he's been doing so before he ever started writing original music. (He even previously shot a tiny indie film with Elisabeth Moss called A Buddy Story, but it wasn't widely distributed). Now that he's shaved his beard, he's hoping to branch out and play a wide range of characters. Matis took a break from his current Spark Seeker album tour to chat with Vulture about going full-frontal in Equus, getting rid of his facial hair, and losing a role to Justin Timberlake. What was your experience with acting before this? As a kid,...

This week on Operation Kino, we're once again down a Da7e, and this time swap him out for Jenni Miller, writer at Film.com, Bust and many other fine establishments. We review the new John Hillcoat drama Lawless, then move on to the newest installment of everyone's favorite game, Patches Matches, which helps us wrap up the summer movie season. Before any of that, though, there's a lightning round inspired by Matisyahu's role in The Possession, and then tidbits, in which David worries for his health after seeing The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate in 3D with subtitles, Jenni s a fan of For A Good Time Call, Patches doesn't understand why y'all hate on Paul Auster all the time, and Katey tentatively recommends the Jewish-influenced horror of The Possession. We end, as always, with your lightning round answers for dessert. Take a listen below and find your...

The cast from the upcoming film “The Possession” was present at the press conference earlier this week. Latino-Review was there to provide some coverage.
The cast, at all times, showed enthusiasm and fondness for each other. The full cast provided informative details about the making of the movie, along with great humor.
Director Ole Bornedal and actors Kyra Sedgwick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Natasha Calis and Matisyahu were in attendance during the press conference. The screenwriters Stiles White and Juliet Snowden also answered plot questions about this horror film.
“The Possession” is about a young girl that buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl’s father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child.
Here are the details from the press conference below:

Back in 2004, the La Times ran an article about a man who put a Dybbuk Box up for sale on EBay. Allegedly this mysterious wooden box, carved with Hebrew lines of scripture, brought on eerie occurrences and a strange string of bad luck. It supposedly caused cockroach infestations as well as made its owners’ hair fall out. It caused horrific nightmares and brought on sudden illnesses. Why all the spookiness you ask? Well, a Dybbuk is a malevolent spirit from Jewish folklore that is said to take control of human hosts, and is powerful enough to eventually kill them in the process. This Dybbuk box was a vessel meant to keep such a demon at bay, encasing the spirit and containing it so it wouldn’t bother the living any longer.

It’s tough not to like a movie where the exorcist tasked with saving you is Matisyahu.
Wait a minute, what? Yes, it’s true, the Jewish reggae music superstar does make an appearance as a young rabbi-in-training, who comes to the aid of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, when his little girl is possessed by a demon. But I’m getting ahead of myself. We’ll get to that later.
The horror genre ain’t what it used to be. Usually when we get horror from big budget studios, money is poured into visual effects which no matter how realistic they are, can never function as a substitute for a good story. Love them or hate them, the reason such recent smaller fare like Paranormal Activity or Saw became big money making franchises is because budgetary limitations forced those behind those films to focus on story and use the less-is-more approach...

Despite being based on a true story, The Possession lacks any real scares.
After his divorce from Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick), Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is trying to make a new home to share with his daughters. While picking up dishes at a local garage sale, his youngest Em (Natasha Calis) becomes fascinated with an old wooden box. Buying it for his little girl, Clyde was completely unaware of the horrors contained inside… A demon spirit. As Em’s behavior begins to change, the secrets of the box begin to unfold, and the race begins to save her soul.
Being a fan of horror, I really wanted to like this film. I tend to love a good possession film. This one, however, really lacked in a couple of areas. Mainly writing and timing. The actors are the best part of this film.
To start with, the writers didn’t really develop the characters,...

Most of you know Sam Raimi as the director of the three Evil Dead movies and original Spider-Man trilogy, but the imaginative filmmaker also helped form Ghost House Pictures in 2002, a production house dedicated to the financing, development and distribution of high-concept genre films. Raimi's latest movie as a producer is The Possession, which opens in theaters on August 29. The PG-13 horror film is based on a true story and follows a fractured family that must unite when the youngest daughter becomes possessed by Dibbuk—an ancient malevolent spirit certain Jews believe can be trapped in a Dibbuk box. The little girl unwittingly releases the evil, and the father (Dean Morgan) implores the help of a Hasidic Jewish exorcist (Matisyahu) to save his daughter. We...

Horror movies may never get the sort of recognition that other genres of movies receive, but there's no denying that the really good ones can provide, in the words of actress Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer TV series), an "everlasting terrifying memory." A self-confessed "fan of horror," Sedgwick recently strode the red carpet at the premiere of her own recent entry in the genre, The Possession, in which she plays the mother of a young girl who becomes possessed by a malevolent spirit from Jewish folklore known as a dibbuk.
The young actress who plays Sedgwick's daughter, Natasha Calis (The Firm TV series), was also on hand and she revealed to our own Jeremy Parsons that the scariest part of the movie for her was filming a scene in which "buckets and buckets" of moths were dumped on her. The movie is supposedly based on a true story and rapper-turned-actor Matisyahu said that,...

Ever since Matisyahu — a Hasidic Jew from New York — debuted his first album in 2004, his spiritual, stripped-down roots reggae connected with many music lovers of all faiths. He has released four albums, including July's "Spark Seeker," which includes songs like "Sunshine," "Crossroads" and a cover of Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier."
Although Matisyahu had never appeared on-screen before as an actor, "The Possession" producer Sam Raimi was a big supporter of his inclusion in the horror movie, which opens in theaters on Aug. 31. Matisyahu plays Tzadok, a member of a strict Hasidic Jewish community who is asked to perform an exorcism on a little girl who is possessed by a Dibbuk — an evil, unattached spirit — that has been released from the box that held it captive.

In 1997, Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal made his U.S. feature filmmaking debut with Nightwatch.
Starring Ewan McGregor, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte and Patricia Arquette, the thriller was a remake of Bornedal's 1994 film Nattevagten from Denmark. Nightwatch was a Dimension Films production and it faced a small delay reaching the screen (as is/was the case with some Dimension projects). Following its lackluster reception, Bornedal returned home to continue his directing career overseas.
His name wasn't connected to Hollywood again until 2007 when Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert's Ghost House Pictures acquired the American remake rights to Bornedal's sci-fi/horror film The Substitute. While progress on that remake moved slowly, Raimi asked Bornedal to take a crack at another American film, The Possession, opening in theaters this Friday.
The film is a loose re-telling of Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "Jinx in a Box" and centers around a cursed...

On Friday, August 31st Lionsgate is releasing their latest chilling project The Possession which is loosely based on real events surrounding a mysterious "Dibbuk Box" that terrorized an unsuspecting family just a few years back.
Directed by Ole Bornedal, The Possession stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, newcomer Natasha Calis and musician Matisyahu.
During yesterday's press day for The Possession, Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Morgan, Sedgwick and Calis about the film, their experiences while making it and more on how the familial aspects of the story of the film were so important to all of them.

Sam Raimi has been all over the news lately, with the Evil Dead remake sparking massive internet debate, and the man’s lawsuit trying to stop an unauthorized Evil Dead 4 sparked the flames further. There was even more news swirling around the director today. In an interview with Styd about The Possession, a film Sam Raimi is producing, Raimi let slip that he’s working on another horror project. There was of course an uproar of excitement over the news, and so he was asked by Styd what the project entails. Well, he kind of regrets announcing to the world about the film for starters. Here’s what he had to say:
Before: “I’d like to make another horror movie, I’m writing one with my brother right now. I’m really looking forward to it.”
After: “I’m very appreciative to all of your readers…I’m beginning...

You’ve doubtless heard plenty about The Possession, a horror film coming out August 31st that stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport and Natasha Calis. Oh, and Matisyahu. The film is directed by Ole Bornedal, and focuses on Dibbuk lore. It all made sense until I said Dibbuk lore, right? Well, the following featurette, courtesy of Styd, explains a bit about a Dibbuk. Namely, what the hell it is.

I've already discussed the "true" story that inspired the upcoming supernatural thriller The Possession and now Lionsgate has released a featurette talking to Jewish mysticism experts and director Ole Bornedal about the idea of possession. If you're interested in the story that inspired the film click here, but for the short of it, the film centers on a family that purchases an antique wooden box at a yard sale only to find it contained a demon spirit that eventually possesses the young girl in the family. The film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"), Natasha Calis ("The Firm") and Matisyahu. I don't know if The Possession will actually be any good. Most often films like this turn out to be rather disappointing, not trying hard enough to convince us any of this could actually happen and relying more on jump scares. It's one thing to creep us...

Shock Till You Drop got a chance to talk with Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-man) about two upcoming movies he’s producing, The Possession and the controversial remake of his own film Evil Dead. I won’t waste your time talking about it, let’s get right to the good stuff:
Question: The Possession didn’t quite have the spook-a-blast stuff of Drag Me to Hell, but it had the same energy to it. Is this a sort of branding for Ghost House you collaborated with Ole on or did he bring this in on his own?
Sam Raimi: The style is all Ole Bornedal. He’s a great director and he’s made a lot of films. He has his own unique style. The type of film it is is reprentative of the kind of films that Ghost House Pictures likes to make. I really like supernatural horror films,...
