God Save The Queens
Every film festival needs a bit of glamour, and director Jordan Danger delivers it in spades with God Save The Queens, one of the highlights of this year’s Outfest. What’s more, she does so in a way which is challenging and thoughtful, with a story about getting older on the drag scene, navigating old rivalries, helping newcomers and dealing with people whose main agenda is exploitation. When we met up early in the festival, I asked her how it all began.
“Originally, I wrote this film as a short movie,” she explains. “It was a short film that we made about Marmalade’s characters specifically. It was about an ageing drag queen trying to make it, on her last legs, and that was always what really was profound to me, especially growing up being an actress and feeling like you're sort of on a timetable,...

God save the audience for “God Save the Queens,” a muddled drag artist-focused comedy with zero laughs that also features some implausible dramatic interludes.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which popularized and mainstreamed drag for the masses, has now been running for 14 seasons; the show has become a sort of institution, still zealously watched and dissected by fans, but drag artists find themselves in an increasingly awkward position in the current landscape of heated debates on gender and sex. That awkwardness is sometimes the very tentative subject of “God Save the Queens,” which retreats into vague uplift whenever a truly serious side of this issue might emerge.
First-time writer-director Jordan Danger attempts to center the film on four struggling drag artists who are sent to a therapy retreat to work out their issues with each other, but this lame plot device kicks in about midway through the movie, and this sometimes makes...

To celebrate the release of Beyond The Sky – available on DVD & Digital Download 29th April – we have a DVD to giveaway! An engrossing supernatural thriller that at times feels like a found-footage documentary, Beyond The Sky is both an evocative journey into the unknown, and a portrait of the community built around one of modern day’s most prolific myths.

If you're into UFOs and stories about alien abductions, I've got a trailer here for a film you might be interested in called Beyond The Sky. The movie doesn't look like a great film, but it looks like it will be something that I'd enjoy watching. The film follows a skeptic who embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of alien abductions, and as you might expect, things take an interesting and scary turn for him as he come to realize the truth. Here's the synopsis:
Chris Norton has been hearing about alien abductions his entire life but, in his gut, he knows they are not real. Setting out to disprove the alien abduction phenomenon once and for all, he attends a UFO convention to meet alleged abductees and reveal the truth behind their experiences. It is only when he meets Emily, who claims to have been abducted every seven years on her birthday,...

Sony Pictures Classics expects summer blockbuster fatigue to help its weekend newcomer The Wife starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce, opening New York and Los Angeles Friday. The film is one of a fairly busy slate of limited release newcomers, perhaps hinting at another busy fall as awards season looms. Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate is bowing Juliet, Naked Friday in NYC and L.A., starring Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd. Sundance favorite We The Animals by Jeremiah Zagar opens Friday in New York en route to a 100-plus location count by end of September, via The Orchard. Music Box Films is launching French-language Memoir Of War based on the book by Marguerite Duras. And actor Peter Facinelli is making his directorial debut with comedy Breaking & Exiting starring Milo Gibson and Jordan Hinson, making its way to select locations in a day and date roll out via Freestyle Digital Media.

“Breaking and Exiting” is the first directorial feature for actor Peter Facinilli, and first produced screenplay for actor-turned-producer/star Jordan Hinson. One hopes it was a good learning experience for all, because from a viewer’s perspective, the results don’t provide much reward.
This wafer-thin seriocomedy, basically one long meet-cute between a burglar and a suicidal woman, feels padded even at just 78 minutes. Whatever the promise of that premise, very little happens in the way of narrative or character development, which leaves the film over-reliant on a central chemistry (Milo Gibson is Hinson’s co-lead) that isn’t really there.
Despite surface polish, this indie feels like a classroom exercise that checks off the basic technical and narrative-beat boxes needed to get a passing grade, yet never develops any real personality of its own or raison d’etre. Freestyle Digital Media launches the film in limited theatrical release simultaneous with VOD on Aug.

"I think you're making a mistake, I think you could be happy..." Freestyle Digital Media has debuted an official trailer for a dark romantic comedy titled Breaking & Exiting, the feature directorial debut of actor Peter Facinelli (who does not have a role in the film). The pitch for this is rather odd - it's about a thief who breaks in to a woman's home and discovers her about to kill herself. So, as the logline says, he "decides to save her from herself, sending both of them into a darkly comedic journey of self-discovery and love." But of course. The cast is lead by Milo Gibson and Jordan Hinson, who also wrote the screenplay; along with Adam Huber, Joaquim de Almeida, Justine Wachsberger, James Kyson, Lily Anne Harrison, and Cecile Cubilo. This doesn't look so bad, but doesn't look so good either. If you're curious, take a look. Here's...

"Well, what if I told you I had a plan? It's the only thing powerful enough to stop what's coming." Magnet Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for a very weird, global-scale indie sci-fi film of sorts titled Higher Power, about a gamma ray that gives a human on Earth some crazy impressive superpowers. This is very hard to describe, you just have to dive into the footage. The official description is fairly vague as well, only explaining that "when the Universe decides what it wants, it's pointless to resist." You'll get a sense of this in the trailer. Starring Ron Eldard as Joe Steadman, who reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber. The cast includes Jade Tailor, Austin Stowell, Jordan Hinson, Colm Feore, Tom Wright, and Laura Margolis. This actually looks pretty cool, and a bit weird. It's worth a watch, for sure.

Peter Facinelli has been cast in new CBS drama series S.W.A.T. for what is expected to be a recurring role.
Inspired by the 2003 film, S.W.A.T. centers on a locally born-and-bred Swat sergeant (Shemar Moore) who’s torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles. Stephanie Sigman, Alex Russell, Lina Esco, Kenneth Johnson, Peter Onorati and Jay Harrington also star.
Facinelli plays Michael Plank, a confident, powerful businessman who also volunteers as a civilian Police Commissioner and head of the Police Board. While attending a charity event at Swat headquarters, he is introduced to the team. When Jessica (Sigman) presents him with a list of innovations she’s drawn up for the department to improve its relationship with the community, he’s deeply impressed by her...

It is with a heavy heart and a few tears in my eyes that I write the sendoff for Eureka. After 77 incredible episodes, we said goodbye to our favorite small town in "Just Another Day."
I was so glad to see that so many people made an appearance, starting with the lovely (and grown up) Jordan Hinson as Zoe Carter, continuing with Matt Frewer and his continual pursuit of the animal variety as the "Biological Containment Specialist" Taggert, and ending with the surprise return of James Callis as Dr. Grant, or rather Trent Rockwell.
While it was bittersweet that Dr. Grant purchased the town, allowing Eureka to continue in our hearts (if not on TV), the tears came as Jack fell through the worm hole and experienced the flashback. "Eureka" showrunner Jaime Paglia calls his series finale, "Just Another Day," a "love letter to fans." So did you feel the love?
We sure did -- especially if you are measuring by tears and goosebumps.
Maybe the best line of the evening came from amnesiac Holly (Felicia Day), who perfectly captured what Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) means to the little town of Eureka:
"Oh! I remember now. You guys are smart, but the sheriff is the strong force -- he holds it all together."
In his last heroic act of the series, Carter dove through a wormhole to save the town. As he traveled through that space-time anomaly, we saw snippets of important characters (Stark, argh!) and pivotal scenes -- including season one's alternate timeline in which Allison was his wife and pregnant with their child.
After he saved Eureka for the gazillionth time, that happy reality finally...
