Casting director Russell Boast, producer Annabelle K. Frost, producer Nana Greenwald, writer-director Tamar Halpern, animator David Kuhn, producer-director Sheldon Larry and broadcast journalist May Lee have been hired as full-time faculty at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
The new faculty members have worked on some of the most prominent film and television projects of the past 30 years, including the Harrison Ford starrer The Fugitive, David Fincher’s Seven and Disney’s Pocahontas. The events, titled “Closer To Equity: Deconstructing the Asian Narrative,” are free and open to the entertainment community.
The CSA will also hold roundtable discussions on Asian inclusion on May 20. Speakers include Grace Wu, NBCUniversal’s EVP Casting and Entertainment Content; director Jude Weng; and actors Jamie Chung, Amy Hill, Dustin Nguyen, Grace Park, Rain Valdez and Jude Weng.

Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.
It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

Joining virtually every other major awards ceremony, the Casting Society of America has moved the date of its annual awards ceremony, landing on April 15, 2021 for the first-ever virtual version of the Artios Awards.
That date puts the casting awards precisely 10 days before the 2021 Oscars, slated for April 25 as part of a large scale schedule shift necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic that completely disrupted the 2020 film release calendar.
Csa also announced the recipients of its three special honors. The Rosalie Joseph Humanitarian Award will go to The Actors Fund, the charitable organization that supports behind-the-scenes workers and has been especially necessary during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the 2021 Artios Awards will for the first time present the Hoyt Bowers Award to two recipients — Robi Reed and Tara Rubin.

When director Lisa Donato came on board to helm “Gossamer Folds,” casting a trans actor to play the lead was imperative. “It was non-negotiable,” she says of her directorial debut.
Even more important was getting the framing and lighting right, and for that, Donato recruited her frequent collaborator and trans cinematographer Ava Benjamin Shorr to make the right choices when it came to “accurately depicting a trans person.”
“Gossamer Folds,” now screening at Outfest LA’s film festival, tells the story of a friendship between Gossamer, played by “Transparent’s” Alexandra Grey, and a young white boy named Tate (Jackson Robert Scott). But Tate’s transphobic father learns about Alexandra and forbids him from talking to his new friend. However, Tate defies his father’s orders to form a powerful friendship.

The Casting Society of America is urging its members not to audition actors in person during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Most productions have shut down, but producers are still looking for talent for future projects once the crisis has abated. “In an effort to responsibly communicate and follow global guidelines about social distancing, I cannot stress enough the importance of limiting your audition sessions to self-tape and online sessions only and the avoidance of in person sessions and meetings until further notice,” said Csa president Russell Boast in an email to his members today.

Thirty-five years ago, the Casting Society of America (Csa) held its inaugural Artios Awards to celebrate casting directors’ indelible contributions to the industry. The Beverly Hills ceremony was short and sweet, handing out awards in only four categories. As content has continued to increase in volume, so too have the Artios Awards grown. Now, the ceremony boasts more than 35 categories across film, television and theater, as well as special honorees/achievements, with ceremonies expanding to include New York and London.
“With time, it’s been an evolution,” says Russell Boast, president, Csa. “The more people have come to understand what the art and craft of casting is, the more they’ve been able to recognize that we’re in a position to have a voice to change stereotypes or break molds. All the honorees this year speak to the heart of what the Csa is today and our push for inclusion and diversity.

Not long ago, the idea of casting director David Rubin being president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences would have fallen somewhere between pipe dream and delusional. It’s an unlikely story, and one that also could make him exactly the right person to lead at this moment: Just as he led casting directors out of the wilderness, he could do the same for the Academy.
It was only 14 years ago when casting directors were the only department heads who weren’t represented by a union. The producers and studios (AMPTP) refused to recognize them, labelling them independent contractors. The powerful Directors Guild turned them away, believing the path to unionization too steep and/or impossible. With Rubin as one of the movement’s many leaders, casting directors made a stand against the AMPTP in 2005 by forming an unlikely partnership with the Teamsters and threatening a work stoppage.

BAFTA today has issued updated rules for next year’s Ee British Academy Film Awards, along with a fixed timeline for the upcoming season (see schedule below). Among the major tweaks, BAFTA will introduce a Casting Award to “recognize achievements in the craft of casting and its importance in filmmaking.” There will be no changes, however, to existing rules regarding theatrical releases required for eligibility, a hot-button issue in the past year, and one BAFTA intends to be “rigorous” about.
These rule shifts — or lack thereof — come following what BAFTA says was extensive consultation across the industry. Earlier this year, there was backlash from exhibitors after Netflix’s big wins with Roma on BAFTA night 2019. Major chains Vue and Cineworld felt Roma had not had sufficient theatrical play to qualify for awards recognition.

So you think you want to be a casting director? The Casting Society of America is here to help. The organization has officially launched its training and education program to prepare the next generation of casting directors to claim their spot in the industry. “We were all self-taught; there’s no formal training,” Csa President Russell Boast told Backstage. He recognized that the lack of college or other educational courses puts those wanting to try their hand at casting at a disadvantage and generally leaves people with less awareness of what casting does and of career opportunities within the field. Through the program, the organization intends to bring some order to those seeking an entry-level position. “As the president of Csa, I’m all about educating the world as to what a casting director does. It’s so nuanced and creative, and it is an integral part of the filmmaking process,...

The Casting Society of America will sponsor town halls in Los Angeles and New York for actors of Middle Eastern, North African and South Asian decent “to effect concrete change in how actors in these historically underrepresented communities are afforded access to job opportunities.”
“I think that the entertainment industry has been responsible for perpetuating some harmful and potentially dangerous stereotypes,” Csa president Russell Boast said. “Events like this provide an opportunity to address current issues and are a crucial step towards accurate and authentic portrayals in the media.”
The town halls, set for October 22 (New York) and October 23 (Los Angeles) are part of the Csa’s ongoing Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in Casting Initiative. Last October, it hosted an open casting call for transgender actors, and in December held an open call for performers with disabilities to showcase their talents in front of professional casting directors in cities nationwide.

This will be the 24th installment of the Laff. This fall, its second under the leadership of Festival Director Jennifer Cochis and the first in its new time slot. The date moves Laff into direct competition with AFI Fest (November 8-15), the last of the fall festivals.
Other Laff projects include partnering with the International Documentary Association’s biannual conference, Getting Real ’18; expanding its inclusion summit We the People at the Writers Guild this September, and is mounting a benefit dinner celebrating 25 years of Project Involve, honoring alumni Effie T. Brown, Jon M. Chu,...
