At some point in middle school or high school, most people were exposed to two different types of rudimentary essay-writing. There’s the five-paragraph essay, that goes, intro/thesis-body-body-body-conclusion. And there’s the compare-and-contrast essay, in which you start with two seemingly opposed subjects and unify them by juxtaposing the ways they’re different, but also the ways in which they’re similar. From a distance of decades it’s easy to mock both essay structures, but they’re both incredibly useful ways of teaching young writers to approach complicated topics.
I’m not sure if the new season of National Geographic’s Genius anthology is the most ambitious compare-and-contrast essay every written, but MLK/X is at least a generally well-intentioned illustration of both pros and cons of the format.

The short and shaggy tale of an aging hitman (Pierce Brosnan) who realizes it’s time to either get out of the game or die trying, Phillip Noyce’s “Fast Charlie” is the kind of movie you’ve seen a thousand times before. It was adapted from the 2003 Victor Gischler novel “Gun Monkeys,” which is the kind of book you’ve read a thousand times before. And yet, the difference here — the most crucial reason why this particular version of that well-weathered story is weirdly charming instead of trite — is that Noyce’s film treats its ultra-familiar tropes as more of a feature than a bug. They’re the lingua franca of a Southern-fried thriller set in the clogged drain at the bottom of the criminal underworld; a place that everybody talks about leaving, but nobody ever seems to escape. Not while they’re still breathing, anyway.

Pierce Brosnan hasn’t returned to his James Bond roots, but he’s definitely channeling 007 in the trailer for “Fast Charlie,” the crime thriller that’s also notable for featuring actor James Caan’s final performance.
Brosnan plays Charlie Swift, a contract killer with a serious on-the-job headache: The victim of his most recent assassination is missing his head. That’s a problem if Swift wants to prove the job was done and get paid for it, and more importantly keep the man who hired him — a ruthless New Orleans gangster — happy.
“I have to convince a certain person that the body in that trunk out there is indeed Rolo,” Swift states.
“Something happen to his face?” Marcie, who’s played by Morena Baccarin, says in the video clip.
“It’s missing. Along with the rest of his head,” Charlie answers.

"Be good to yourself, Charlie, and get as far away from here as you can." Vertical has unveiled the official trailer for an assassin action film called Fast Charlie, the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Phillip Noyce. Pierce Brosnan stars as Charlie Swift – a fixer with a problem: the thug he's after is now missing his head, and Charlie will only be paid if the body can be identified. Enter Marcie Kramer, the victim's ex-wife and a woman with all the skills Charlie needs - so they partner up. Along the way, Charlie and Marcie fight to protect the legacy of Charlie's best friend and mentor, Stan Mullen (James Caan in his final performance), while bringing down Beggar and his entire crew. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Toby Huss, along with Sharon Gless and Caan. That little blue scope on his gun is an amusing detail. It's...

Exclusive: Filming on Season 2 of the FX drama series The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges, is being suspended. We hear the crew of the series, produced by 20th Television, were alerted this morning of the decision to stop after today’s shoot, completing Episode 204.
According to sources, the plan had been to film through Episode 205 as five Season 2 scripts had been completed before the writers strike started on June 2. However, the last remaining script needed rewrites, so production will wrap now for the foreseeable future. It will resume sometime after the WGA work stoppage is over.
The set of the show in Santa Clarita has been picketed, causing some delays in production last Thursday. Accompanied by a producer, Bridges crossed the picket line in a van that day.

While The Old Man Season 1 finale has yet to air — it’s broadcast July 21 at 10/9c on FX — we already know there is going to be a second season. The renewal came soon after the series starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman premiered on June 16 (and was the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu — it streams the next day — in its opening weekend). The series is based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name and follows Bridges’ Dan Chase, who has been living off the grid since leaving the CIA decades ago. He’s flushed out of hiding when an assassin comes after him. The FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper (Lithgow) — working with his protégé (and Chase’s secret daughter) Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat) and CIA Special Agent Raymond Waters (E.J. Bonilla) — is called on to hunt Chase down because of their complicated past.

The title of FX’s The Old Man doesn’t really tell you what kind of show it is. It could be a wacky multicamera sitcom about an ill-behaving senior citizen who gets kicked out of his retirement home and has to move in with his hipster grandson. It could be a whimsical dramedy about a retiree figuring out how to fill his days. Or it could be what it actually is: a thriller starring Jeff Bridges as a renegade former CIA operative who has to kill a lot of...

Jeff Bridges joined his castmates onstage for a virtual panel for his upcoming FX series “The Old Man” on Tuesday, where he told reporters he feels “terrific.”
In Oct. 2020, Bridges announced he had lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Last fall, he confirmed he is in remission. A joyful Jeff Bridges held court Tuesday with the cast and crew of The Old Man, the FX series that marks Bridges’ first series regular role.
Bridges declared he felt “terrific,” after having to take time away from production after he was diagnosed with lymphoma. (Production went dark for 15 months). The series was originally set to bow last year but is now scheduled for June 16.
“I went through a year and a half of this bizarre dream and then came back,” Bridges told reporters Tuesday. “It was great to be back with the gang.” His co-star Amy Brenneman said she was charmed by how candid Bridges was about his ordeal. When she’d ask him about it, he would say nonchalantly, “‘it was weird but it was interesting. It was cool!'” Brenneman told reporters.

Rebecca Hall said Saturday that her mother told her Hall’s directorial debut, Passing, liberated her family, as Hall’s grandfather was a Black man who decided to pass for White in Detroit.
Hall and stars Ruth Negga and Andre Holland spoke during the panel for the Netflix drama at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York awards-season showcase.
“She called me up in tears when she first saw it and she just said, ‘You’ve liberated us,’ ” Hall said. “I grew up observing my mother and thinking about the psychological impact of being brought up in an environment where you weren’t allowed to talk about something. To me, she always looked like a Black woman. I was saying to her, ‘Tell me about this. What are we? Tell me the story.’ She didn’t know. It’s not that she wouldn’t. She couldn’t. She was respecting her father’s wishes.
