Reviews are in for the newest spinoff film inspired by “The Conjuring” universe, “The Curse of La Llorona,” and the horror film appears to be dead on arrival, at least as far as critics are concerned. “La Llorona” is the latest film to hit the formerly revered franchise begun in 2013 by director James Wan and writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. That includes both “The Conjuring” movies, two “Annabelle” movies with a third on the way, and last year’s box-office hit but critical failure “The Nun,” which also has a sequel coming. Wan handed over the reigns to director Michael Chaves for “La Llorona,” which is currently the franchise’s only standalone film. From reading the reviews below — it may stay that way.

Filmmaker James Wan says The Curse Of The Weeping Woman will hit one at the deepest levels of horror and touch upon some unknown fears. Wan was completely fixated with the folklore of the Weeping Woman, and that's the reason why he backed the horror thriller. The film will be released in India on April 19 by Warner Bros, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
"When I first came to America, one of the first stories that people would come up and tell me was the legend of La Llorona," producer Wan said in a statement.?
The film is an ode to one of the most widespread horror stories shared within the Hispanic community.

There’s a lot of box-office heat on horror these days — Jordan Peele’s Us has already grossed $236 million worldwide. Still, that’s no excuse for a lazy cash-in like The Curse of La Llorona, which plays too timid for terror and is too lazily constructed to haunt anyone’s dreams. This missed-opportunity of a film is based on the Mexican legend of La Llorona, a.k.a. the Weeping Woman. Back in the 17th century, she drowned her two kids after her husband’s skirt-chasing pissed her off; since then,...

Actress Linda Cardellini, who plays the role of the mother who goes up against La Llorana in The Curse Of The Weeping Woman, says she couldn't resist the complex hero at the heart of the horror film. That's the reason she said yes to the project.?
"When I read the script, I loved that it was not about being someone's wife or being someone's sister. It's really about this woman who is fighting the odds to keep her family together, and the lengths she's willing to go to protect her children," Cardellini said in a statement.

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.
In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.
Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious … and her methods more terrifying.
In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children.
Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.

Horror auteur James Wan is best known for adapting Ed and Lorraine Warren's paranormal adventures into the crowd-pleasing Conjuring universe. Now, he's producing the upcoming The Curse of La Llorona, another chilling project that's expected to be one of the biggest horror movies in 2019. Set in Los Angeles during the '70s, the film, slated for release on April 19, stars Linda Cardellini as Anna Garcia, a social worker and widow who notices the parallels between a haunting case at work and the supernatural terrors wreaking havoc on her family.
The movie draws from the scary legend of La Llorona, a terrifying woman-in-white figure who's been the source of children's nightmares for literal centuries. If you haven't already heard of her story from popular Latin American folklore, here's what you need to know before watching the horror flick.
Her Appearance
The Spanish name La Llorona translates into "The Weeping Woman" in English.

The Curse of La Llorona isn’t Annabelle unwatchable, but it’s certainly no The Conjuring rebirth. Michael Chaves’ ritualistic Conjurverse spinoff lays standard haunted house blueprints but doesn’t execute plans with particular enthusiasm or distinct characteristics. “La Llorona” herself evokes such richness in Latin American darkness and fabled maternal horrors, but none of that translates in this blandly monotone pastiche of basic scares that Wan’s lens has before presented with more paranormal viciousness. Chaves executes from Curse A to Banishment B, just without the particularly descript terrorization that’s elevated horror cinema’s best efforts as of late.
Linda Cardellini stars as social worker Anna Tate-Garcia, a single mother who unwittingly introduces her children to an evil ghost after handling Patricia Alvarez’s (Patricia Velasquez) tragic case. “La Llorona” (Marisol Ramirez) hopes to steal Anna’s children and drown them, but the strong-willed widow won’t submit without a fight.

Things go bump in the night — and, as an occasional change of pace, in the middle of the afternoon — with a frequency that will neither surprise nor disappoint genre fans throughout “The Curse of La Llorona,” an efficiently formulaic shocker inspired by the centuries-old Mexican legend of the titular bogeywoman. It’s set in Los Angeles during the early 1970s, for no readily apparent reason other than to justify the what-the-hell inclusion of Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” theme on the soundtrack. But its true location clearly is a distant corner of producer James Wan’s “The Conjuring” extended horror-movie universe, which gets a fleeting wink-wink hat-tip early on with a clever cameo appearance by Tony Amendola in his “Annabelle” role as Father Perez.

The first trailer for Michael Chaves’ directorial debut, “The Curse of La Llorona,” has dropped — and it’s terrifying.
The trailer starts with a sort of ceremony where sage is burned around a woman. Linda Cardellini’s character interrupts the ceremony, and later in the night, she witnesses a crime scene that has taken the lives of many. The same woman from earlier tells her, “It’s your fault! I tried to stop her!”

One of the most chilling stories in Mexican folklore is that of La Llorona, or the Weeping Woman. According to legend, La Llorona was a beautiful woman who drowned her own children after being distraught over the sight of her estranged husband with a new wife. After seeing her children’s bodies in the river, La Llorona realized the weight of her actions and threw herself in after them.
La Llorona now eternally searches for her children, looking for other lost children to make her own. If you hear her cries in the night, you are doomed.
“The Curse of La Llorona” transports the Mexican legend to 1970s Los Angeles, where a social worker and her children are pulled into her web after ignoring the warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment. Their only hope at defeating La Llorona is a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay.

There are many urban legends and stories about ghosts, ghouls and supernatural beings from all cultures, but there is something extra terrifying about the Mexican fable of La Llorona (aka The Weeping Woman). As they say in the debut trailer for the New Line Cinema horror The Curse of La Llorona: “It’s a folktale…to some.”
During Comic-Con in July, New Line gave a generous preview of the horror pic during their ScareDiego event and the new trailer builds on the terror. While in San Diego covering all the 2018 Comic-Con festivities, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Linda Cardellini and Raymond Cruz, who recently collaborated on the upcoming New Line Cinema project, The Curse of La Llorona. Based on the Mexican folklore that has terrorized generations upon generations of naughty children who have grown up in fear of “The Weeping Woman,” La Llorona was directed by Michael Chaves and also co-stars Patricia Velasquez, Marisol Ramirez, and Sean Patrick Thomas.
During the interview, both Cruz and Cardellini discussed carrying the weight of the story of The Curse of La Llorona, collaborating with Chaves, and how the film may be set in the 1970s, but it still parallels a lot of current day issues as well.
Look for The Curse of La Llorona in theaters everywhere on April 19th, 2019.
