Dana Strong, CEO of Comcast-owned Sky Group has promised customers of the U.K. media conglomerate will continue to receive Warner Bros Discovery content on Sky platforms, saying that discussions with the studio to extend their content agreement are ongoing.
“We’ve been a partner with Warner for a very long time,” said Strong, adding that they’re “in conversation” about the future of their deal.
The deal, which primarily covers HBO content such as “Succession” and “And Just Like That,” is set to expire next year. Given the rise of studio-owned streamers, at the beginning of the multi-year output deal it seemed it would be unlikely to be renewed, with Wbd focusing on funnelling exclusive content to its own streaming offering Max.

If you’ve seen the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables, you’ve experienced Anne Hathaway’s short but stellar performance.
Based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, the musical, known by many simply as Les Mis, is set in early nineteenth-century France during the June Rebellion, a time of unrest in the country. Anne Hathaway has little screen time, but her character is significant in the film’s storyline.

Hathaway portrays the character of Fantine, an unwed mother forced into prostitution to support her young daughter, Cosette. The complicated and emotional role took a toll on Hathaway, who underwent physical and mental changes to portray the character as accurately as possible.

Think The Munsters, but way more grim.
UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.
Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to showrun the drama. The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.
Executive producers are Beer and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu is a co-exec producer.
The last time someone tried to dust off The Munsters for the small screen was in 2017, when NBC opted to reboot the comedy with Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers. The half-hour single-camera version was going to follow members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

Several inconvenient things can happen in a movie set, and much more if one stars in films that require extravagant costumes, such as Fantastic Beasts. Fans know how stunning the wardrobe of the characters in the franchise is, but not all glamorous things are comfortable to wear.

As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

They attract millions of viewers observing the attempts to maintain law and order not only in the courthouse, but also in the participants’ minds.

A Few Good Men (1992)

When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

Who has not felt the sting of a missed opportunity, especially when you have come so close to your big break? For O’Shea Jackson Jr., the brush with a galaxy far, far away was definitely a bitter pill to swallow—one that the fandom of both Star Wars and the actor can empathize with.
Rising to fame as an actor in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic film, Straight Outta Compton, Jackson Jr.’s talent has been evident. Earlier this year, moreover, his candidness about the disappointment of losing a coveted role in Ron Howard’s 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story to Donald Glover was as relatable as it was commendable.

Casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord was a pretty big gamble for Marvel. After all, to most of us he was the man-child Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation and nothing more. Fortunately for Pratt and the MCU, director James Gunn saw something special in him. While a number of actors also auditioned for the part, one who still remembers that moment and why he didn’t land Peter Quill is Joel Edgerton, who is well aware he just didn’t understand the tone they were going for.
Appearing on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast (via Variety), Joel Edgerton remembered Guardians of the Galaxy being one of the most high-profile projects he missed out on, probably for good reason. “Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris [Pratt], didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did. Joel Edgerton has been in Star Wars and the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, so he is versed in sci-fi.
But he failed his audition for the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. He says the reason for that is not understanding the film’s tone.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" was a pretty ballsy move to make in 2014. The film stars Michael Keaton as actor Riggan Thompson, a once-massive Hollywood action star who has aged out of action roles. Notably, Riggan starred in three crowd-pleasing superhero movies about Birdman, a Batman-like vigilante. Keaton, of course, played Batman in 1989, 1991, and 2023.
Riggan is set to star in a high-profile Broadway production, hoping to prove to himself and the world that he is a pliable and capable actor, not merely a nostalgia-laced superhero figure. There is a lot of dialogue in "Birdman" about how superhero movies are the antithesis of art and that superhero actors are aggressively robbed of their thespian instincts. Good actors, Riggan complains, are ripped from meaningful projects and thrust into commercial FX bonanzas where they are expected to do little beyond pose and wear silly costumes.

Eddie Redmayne received his second Tony Award nomination Tuesday, for his role as the shape-shifting Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret.
It’s a role the actor, known for leading films such as The Theory of Everything and in the Fantastic Beasts series, played during the production’s previous West End run. And while he’s already put his own spin on it, with the Emcee evolving from master of ceremonies at the Berlin nightclub at the center of the show to something more sinister, Redmayne said he’s still finding more to explore.
“He’s so enigmatic that he’s endlessly compelling to keep trying to mine and investigate,” Redmayne said.
Part of that exploration also comes as this Cabaret has the audience sitting surrounding the stage, and in a theater has been transformed with three levels of bars, which are used for a pre-show. All of this...

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.
Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

“This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.

Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

In 2014, Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut in Sam Mendes’ revival of Cabaret, playing the supporting role of Fraulein Kost. Now, exactly a decade later, Rankin is playing the lead role of Sally Bowles opposite Eddie Redmayne in a new Broadway production that opened April 21.
“I feel like a completely different person,” says Rankin, as she sits in her dressing room in a red dressing gown, with her blond hair clipped back. “It’s so rare that you get to see your life marked by something so actual, by a piece of work. Life’s not all a cabaret for film actors making their way to Broadway.
In the case of Eddie Redmayne, who now stars as the ghoul-like and flamboyant Emcee in director Rebecca Frecknall’s “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club” at New York’s August Wilson Theatre, life behind the scenes is more “monastic,” as he told IndieWire, than song-and-dance bacchanalia.
“When you’re doing a musical like this, it’s quite monastic living, and it’s almost more like being an athlete than an actor sometimes because when you’re doing eight shows a week, you’re keeping your voice in decent nick,” said Redmayne, Zooming from the backseat of a car between appointments, which just included lunch with Joel Grey, who famously starred as the Master of Ceremonies in Bob Fosse‘s Oscar-winning 1972 film.

Most Broadway shows only get one opening night performance, but Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club had two this weekend!
Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin showed off their fashionable looks on the red carpet for both of the twin openings on Saturday (April 20) and Sunday (April 21) in New York City.
For Saturday night, Eddie wore a white and blue top with fish graphics paired with oversized black pants while Gayle stunned in a green dress. On Sunday afternoon, Eddie wore a white and black suit while Gayle dressed in all black.
They were joined on the red carpet by co-stars Bebe Neuwirth, Steven Skybell, Ato Blankson-Wood, and Henry Gottfried.
This inventive production of Cabaret, directed by Rebecca Frecknall, is now playing at the August Wilson Theatre. Eddie is reprising his Olivier Award-winning performance from the West End production. Buy your tickets now on SeatGeek.com!

Times are changing. And for the better. Over the course of the past decade, the industry has achieved great heights in promoting inclusivity. The atmosphere has improved and sections who were once shunned have luckily been able to put the days of discrimination behind. It was for this reason that Hilary Swank has revealed that she would refuse to do a role that would go on to win her an Academy Award.

Queer people were not always welcome in the Industry. It would be wrong to say that they insinuate that the days of discrimination are gone. But we’ve come a long way. And Hilary Swank knows that better than anyone.

Hilary Swank has reflected on her role in Boys Don’t Cry two decades ago, saying changing awareness means she wouldn’t take the part today.
Swank won her first Oscar for the role of real-life transgender man Brandon Teena, murdered in a hate crime, in the movie which was released in 2000. She told The Times of London newspaper:
“Now for the most part, in most places, it’s accepted to be a trans person. [But] at that time, people weren’t even coming out as gay and lesbian, it was a career killer, or whatever. They weren’t ready to tell their family, or maybe they weren’t even ready to tell themselves. We’re in such different times — I feel like it would be a great opportunity for an actor who’s trans to play that role.”
Swank added: “But I also feel like actors are actors. We are supposed...

I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...
