Alfonso Cuaron claimed the coveted Golden Lion at the 75th Venice International Film Festival for his much-lauded "Roma," a semi-biographical black-and-white neo-realist depiction of middle-class Mexico in the '70s. He previously launched "Gravity" at the same event in 2013, which would win seven Academy Awards.
What made this year's moment extra-sweet was that jury president and buddy Guillermo del Toro handed him the honor. Last year, del Toro was the one who roared his way to a Golden Lion with "The Shape of Water," which would also end up with a Best Picture Oscar. Similarly, Alejandro G. Inarritu who together with the other two directors are known in Hollywood as the Three Amigos showed his "Birdman" in Venice in 2014, and would go on to Best Picture glory as well even if he doesn't have his own Golden Lion yet. Perhaps "Roma" will follow suit, especially if Netflix considers a theatrical run.

Title: Language of a Broken Heart Director: Rocky Powell Starring: Juddy Talt, Lara Pulver, Kate French, Julie White, Ethan Cohn, Oscar Nuñez “Language of a Broken Heart” is exactly the movie that one expects it to be — a frustrating quality for some, perhaps, but smooth medicine for those who trust and like writer-actors’ puppy dog tales that unfold loosely in the vein of the work of Edward Burns. An earnest, uncomplicated and funny-around-the-edges little romantic comedy about a guy on the rebound but still stuck in psychological orbit of his ex, multi-hyphenate Juddy Talt’s movie works best as a showcase for his talents. The story is paper thin, even by [ Read More ]

I still don't know quite how I feel about Quentin Dupieux's horror/comedy film 'Rubber'. Yes, it's about a killer tire. I haven't seen it yet, so the jury is still out. Though from the trailer (below), it looks to be pretty bitchin'.
I am certainly feeling a tingling sense of hope as I view the new poster for the flick. Bloody Corpses? Hell yeah. You can't go wrong with an illustration that features carnage like that. You can see it below.
The movie is available via some VOD cable carriers and will be released in select theaters on br April 1st. Go 'Rubber' go!

The story behind the adaptation of Ayn Rand's classic novel Atlas Shrugged into a feature film is a very interesting one, and I honestly didn't think it would end up being a good film. But today the first trailer for the film has been released for part one of the saga, and it looks like they aren't going to pull off an epic adaptation that this story deserves, bt there's a lot of effort behind it.
The film was originally supposed to be directed by Stephen Polk, son of former MGM chairman Louis Polk, but Paul Johansson, creator and director of the TV show One Tree Hill, was eventually brought in to direct and star in the film adaptation. The film was rushed into production at the last minute to keep the producer John Aglialoro from losing the film rights to the novel, so he jumped into production at...

Title: Rubber Directed By: Quentin Dupieux Starring: Stephen Spinella, Jack Plotnick, Roxane Mesquida, Daniel Quinn, Devin Brochu, Hayley Holmes, Haley Ramm, Cecelia Antoinette, Ethan Cohn, Charley Koontz, Wings Hauser Who knew there was a tactful way to make a spoof? Well, Rubber isn’t really a parody film like let’s say a Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer film, but it certainly takes aim at the industry. What makes Rubber so beautifully unique is the way it approaches taking throwing that punch. Not only does it outright announce its intentions right from the start, but it’s also a story in and of itself and pretty damn fun, terrifying and innovative one at that. In [...]...

Paul Scheuring’s “The Experiment” is a remake of the 2001 German movie of the same name by Oliver Hirschbiegel, about what happens when you make some volunteers guards and some inmates in a “behavioral experiment” and let them run wild. Basically, shit happens in bloody and violent ways. I coulda told you that. Despite its cast (Adrien Brody, Maggie Grace, and Forest Whitaker, among others), the film is going direct-to-dvd later this year from Columbia Pictures. Check out the trailer below. 26 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study that ultimately spirals out of control. Starring Adrien Brody, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Grace, Forest Whitaker, Clifton Collins Jr., Fisher Stevens, Travis Fimmel, Ethan Cohn, David Banner, Jason Lew, and directed by Paul Scheuring.

Filming has now started for 5 weeks on the $5 million big screen adaptation of author Ayn Rand's 1957 novel "Atlas Shrugged".
Shooting in Los Angeles, "Atlas Shrugged Part One" is directed by Paul Johansson from a script by Patrick O'Toole, for producers John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow.
The book explores a dystopian United States where leading innovators, ranging from industrialists to artists, refuse to be exploited by society. Protagonist, 'Dagny Taggart', sees society collapse around her as the government increasingly asserts control over all industry, while society's most productive citizens, led by the mysterious 'John Galt', progressively drop out. Galt describes the strike as "stopping the motor of the world" by withdrawing the "minds" that drive society's growth and productivity; with their strike these creative minds hope to demonstrate that the economy and society would collapse without the profit motive and the efforts of the rational and productive.

Paul Johansson ("One Tree Hill"), Taylor Schilling ("Mercy") and Grant Bowler ("True Blood") have been cast as John Galt, Dagny Taggart and Hank Reardon respectively in the independently-produced film adaptation of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" reports Variety.
Producer John Aglialoro had to get production going on this film adaptation of one of literature's most famous works by this past Saturday or lose the feature rights. Well he met the date, with the $5 million-budget "Atlas Shrugged Part One" kicking off its five week shoot over the weekend with Paul Johansson directing from Brian Patrick O'Toole's script.
The project has dwelt in development hell for decades until this year when Aglialoro quickly decided to make the film on his own without any studio backing. As a result, the cast is essentially made up of mostly unknowns including those three above.
Joining them are Michael Lerner ("A Serious Man") as lobbyist...

It looks like Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged has actually moved into film production. The movie started shooting over the weekend, which is a surprise because last we heard there was no official word on who was attached to star in or direct it. The only thing we really knew what that producer John Aglialoro was going to get the film into production and in front of cameras no matter what.
The film was originally supposed to be directed by Stephen Polk, son of former MGM chairman Louis Polk, but at some point during the last couple of weeks Paul Johansson, creator and director of the TV show One Tree Hill, was brought in to develop the film adaptation.

Quentin Dupieux, or if you prefer Mr. Oizo, is a techno musician and director from France, and we are here today to have a little chat about his new project titled Rubber, that was the part of this year’s special screening in the International Critic’s Week competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

And let’s just say this at the beginning: this is pretty weird story. But you can call it original as well (…if you like tires that go around and act as if they were alive…). Ok, weird then!

“A group of spectators is watching a mock-projection in the middle of the desert. They make comments on the scenes of the “film” as it is occurring before their eyes: Robert, a tire that has been abandoned in the desert,...
