Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat have joined the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated next film, “Father Mother Sister Brother.”
They’re joining Cate Blanchett and Vicky Krieps, who were previously rumored to be starring after being photographed on set. “Father Mother Sister Brother” recently wrapped production in Paris following shoots in Dublin, Ireland and in the Northeastern U.S. Post-production has begun New York, and the film is expected to be finished later this year.
“Father Mother Sister Brother” is a triptych, following three separate stories set in different countries and revolving around relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parents and each other. The first part, “Father,” is set in the east coast in Northeastern U.S., “Mother” in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” in Paris, France.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

Cate Blanchett swallows Tár whole and spits out bullets in return. The role, of a fictional classical conductor somersaulting into her own downfall, was written by director Todd Field solely with her in mind. It’s a performance that functions as a total culmination, the crystallised form of all the women Blanchett’s played in the past – from Elizabeth I to Lilith in Nightmare Alley – who act like they have total control but may actually be hollow on the inside. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a single shot of those ice-blue eyes. A little tension in the muscles and they take on a self-satisfied feeling of mastery over their subject.
It’s not required that we sympathise with Blanchett’s Lydia Tàr. Her talent is plain – she’s a protégée of Leonard Bernstein and is one of the few winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award – but she’s also cruel,...

“She’s such a monumental character. She’s so big as a character and so complex. So it was quite a challenge to really visually grasp her,” says production designer Marco Bittner Rosser about his work on “TÁR,” which tells the story of a world-renowned conductor (played by Cate Blanchett) who faces allegations of misconduct. We talked to Rosser and set decorator Ernestine Hipper about the film. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Lydia Tár’s personal spaces were devised in three stages: “You have Tár’s childhood. You have Tár’s first arrival in Berlin, her secret apartment, which is still kept as a cozy spot to step away. And then you see her climbing up, and then you have her in her beautiful penthouse,” explains Hipper. “Being a famous conductor now, her surrounding has to show that she’s made it.”

Genius conductor. Illustrious composer. Author. Professor. The magnificent (and very much fictional) Lydia Tár — the tricky virtuoso at the center of Todd Field’s masterful psychodrama “TÁR” — is all of those things and then some, dwelling in the wealthy and privileged corners of the international classical music community with impeccable style, both understated and powerful.
Played by a haunting Cate Blanchett, Tár inhabits an exclusive intersection of art, expertise, and intellectualism that is rooted in Berlin but spans continents, one that the film’s renowned costume designer Bina Daigeler and production designer Marco Bittner Rosser bring to life with upscale finesse, through the glories and fault lines of the problematic master’s legacy as she falls from grace.
To Daigeler, minimalism was one of the vital keywords of Tár’s wardrobe, a quality she put front and center, contrasting some of the dazzlingly maximalist work she’s made her name with,...

Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is already in the history books after she won the best original score Oscar for “Joker” (2019). Now, she could break a new record with two bonafide awards contenders.
Todd Field’s “Tár,” a fictional psychological drama about one of the greatest living composers and conductors, has received critical acclaim after debuting at many of the fall film festivals. One of the highly praised elements was the incredible music featured in the film. However, in a movie about a composer, many casual cinema-goers were left wondering what was original or pre-purposed (unless you are an expert on musical compositions). Focus Features has confirmed to Variety exclusively that the film’s music by Guðnadóttir meets the requirement for Academy Awards and will be submitted for consideration.
Final determinations for eligibility are ultimately made by the Academy’s music branch. For a score to qualify, a film must feature music...

Much of the action in science-fiction thriller “Stowaway” takes place inside an overcrowded spaceship. The challenge for production designer Marco Bittner Rosser: making the set seem as small as possible yet functional for the shooting crew.
The film, which debuted April 22 on Netflix, stars Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette and Daniel Dae Kim as astronauts on a mission to Mars. Shamier Anderson plays the fourth astronaut — a surprise addition who compromises the mission with his presence.
Screenwriter-director Joe Penna immersed himself in space design research, and chose the International Space Station for his model. The idea of artificial gravity became the basis for the space shuttle’s rotating design.
Rosser’s earliest conversations with Penna were technical. “How do elements that are in the script have to work functionally inside the ship, then relate to the [spinning] exterior?” he asked. “How do they get from A to B? What are the connections between the modules?...

At this point, it’s a given that the stories being told on television have begun to equal or surpass the choices one can get at the movie theater, and this weekend, the Epix Network are finally getting into the game with their first two Epix Original Series, including Berlin Station, an espionage thriller with an all-star cast.
It stars Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) as Daniel Miller, a CIA agent called to work undercover out of the Berlin office, tasked to find a leak from a whistleblower known as “Thomas Shaw” along with his long-time friend and colleague, Hector DeJean (Rhys Ifans). They work under the CIA’s Berlin Chief of Station Steven Frost (Richard Jenkins) and his administrator Valerie Edwards, played by Michelle Forbes (The Killing, True Blood).
Lrm sat down with Armitage and Forbes while they were in New York City promoting the show.

"Birdman" is coming out really strong with the critics awards nominations lately, heading up another list this weekend with the Chicago Film Critics Association. The film picked up nine tips of the hat, with fellow critical darlings "Boyhood" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" not far behind. And a lovely note: naturally, "Life Itself," about the life of Chicago staple Roger Ebert, was nominated for Best Documentary as it continues to be one of the top contenders of that field. I picture him giving a hearty thumbs up to that. Check out the full list of nominees below. Winners will be announced on Dec. 15. And remember to track it all at The Circuit. Best Picture "Birdman" "Boyhood" "The Grand Budapest Hotel" "Under the Skin" "Whiplash" Best Director Wes Anderson, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" David Fincher, "Gone Girl" Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Birdman" Richard Linklater, "Boyhood" Christopher Nolan, "Interstellar" Best Actor Benedict Cumberbatch,...

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.
