Writer/director David Lea first won acclaim in 2002 when Half Life, a short film he co-directed for Greenpeace, won First Prize and Special Jury Prize at the young Advertising Awards in Cannes. He went on to direct award winning music promos for artists such as The Offspring, Emiliana Torrini and was nominated for Best VFX at the MTV music video awards for his work on the Radiohead Promo ‘There, There’.
His last short film Storage (staring Tom Hughes – Cemetery Junction, About Time) premiered at the 66th Venice International Film Festival before screening at festivals around the world. And now he’s released his latest short, On Sunday – a film half a decade in the making – shot on location in Cornwall and painstakingly post produced in the weekends and evenings over the next 5 years…

Teased in Warner Bros. Pictures’ "For Your Consideration" and later confirmed by all involved, Watertower Muisc has released actor-musician Billy Boyd’s "The Last Goodbye" in full. Running behind "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies’" credits, the track is one of the few components of Peter Jackson’s trilogy-capper that could take Oscar gold. Written and composed by Boyd (Howard Shore, who played Pippin in Jackson’s "Lord of the Rings" films, "The Last Goodbye" fits with "The Hobbit" series’ musical trend of folksy male vocalists (with Neil Finn’s "Song of the Lonely Mountain" and Ed Sheeran’s "I See Fire") versus the ethereal ballads that Enya, Emilíana Torrini, and Annie Lennox leant to "Lord of the Rings." Neither Finn nor Sheeran’s songs cracked the Original Song races in the past two years, giving "The Last Goodbye" an uphill battle when it comes to Oscars. “We focused...

2 Chainz ft. Iamsu!, “Livin’”There are a lot of things to love about the new 2 Chainz album, starting with the great title B.O.A.T.S. II #Metime. (Finally, 2 Chainz is taking a little 2 Chainz time — you know, spa day, mani-pedi, Thai hot stone massage. Leave the kids with a sitter! Pamper yourself, Chainz!) Another of the album’s virtues: how tossed-off it feels, and how the rapper makes that a virtue. He pours out punchlines — some witty, some dopey, some gloriously both — giving every song the ramshackle feel of an off-the-dome freestyle. Even the album’s afterthoughts have their moments. One of my favorite verses is in the deluxe-edition bonus track “Livin’,” a gloriously scattershot mix of boasts and quips that climaxes in a couplet for the ages: “Brrraaattt, better duck, nigga!/Got a lake in my yard filled with ducks nigga!”Emiliana Torrini, “Speed of Dark”The...

As The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey dominates the box office, Ivan has a listen to Howard Shore's superb score...
Like a pair of old jeans that you hope still fit, returning to Middle-Earth after nine years was always going to be a daunting prospect. Thanks to its strange new 48fps appearance and a padded script that tried to turn it into a Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn't fit quite as comfortably as everyone hoped.
Not so for composer Howard Shore. Howard slips into those trousers with all the silky charm of Ian McKellen’s eyebrows, recapturing the mood of his original scores while also developing new themes; the characters are all new, but the backdrop feels the same.
And backdrops don't get much better than this. If Peter Jackson was bonkers to try and film Tolkien’s fantasy epic...

While the ingredients might seem the same -- Middle Earth, hobbits, dwarves, adventure, Gandalf, etc. -- Peter Jackson's upcoming "The Hobbit" trilogy will likely offer up some key differences from his "The Lord Of The Rings" series of movies. And when it comes to the soundtrack, it looks like Jackson will be switching up the game too. While 'Fellowship Of The Ring,' 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return Of The King' all featured end credits tunes by women -- Enya, Emiliana Torrini and Annie Lennox respectively -- for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the director has turned to fellow New Zealander and Crowded House member Neil Finn. There's no word yet on the title of the song or if he'll be joined by his bandmates, but it perhaps suggests a different tonal direction for the music that will play as you unstick your feet from the theater floor.

Zack Snyder, as the filmmaker tends to do, has split the Owf audience (and indeed our own writers) firmly down the middle over his latest movie Sucker Punch but one thing that we can all agree on is that it has a kick-ass soundtrack.
We previewed it some weeks back and now I am delighted to say we have three copies of “Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” that’s out now, to give away to our lucky readers, courtesy of Sony Music.
The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and will delight filmgoers and music fans of all generations.
Fascinatingly reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and...

(The second very positive review of Sucker Punch at Owf, this time from Adam Rayner, with the movie out in the U.K. today)
‘It doesn’t know what it wants to be’ is a stock phrase batted around a lot in film criticism; Sucker Punch seems certain to receive this more than most movies. Zack Snyder’s latest film is another action-packed, CGI-laden feast of the senses that like his earlier effort, the wonderful Watchmen, does itself no favours with mainstream audiences by overcomplicating what on paper is already a somewhat convoluted concept; a thriller set in three parallel worlds all existing simultaneously. However, while many may view this as a flaw – I view it as a virtue; it is not that this film doesn’t know what it wants to be, but rather it knows exactly what it wants to be: ambitious, bold and challenging.

The Sucker Punch soundtrack. Describing his new project Sucker Punch as Alice In Wonderland with Machine Guns might have been a good way of securing funding, and might attract chuckling late-teen boys to the theatres, but graphic-fancying CGI automaton Zack Snyder might just as equally have suggested Terminator 2 with cartoon owls, or Citizen Kane with the Ed 209, such is the wisdom of melding a beautifully functioning classic with a completely incongruous element. If only he’d come up with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, then at least he’d have a best-selling book on his hands. Just as well that Snyder’s snappy-cum-brainless one-liner stands empirically for nothing, the similarities of Sucker Punch with Lewis Carroll’s classic limited to a female protagonist entering a sort of fantasy world, and the dissimilarities being giant robots, CGI everything, massive explosions, every female character looking like an auditioning Playboy bunny, and everything...

Music is an important aspect of any movie, but in "Sucker Punch," it's absolutely essential.
Director Zack Snyder sat down with MTV News to chat about his latest action epic, which lands in theaters today (March 25), and he discussed the integral role that music plays in the film. As you're likely already aware, "Sucker Punch" deals in multiple levels of reality, and when our heroes slip into that combat space, they do so through a combination of music and Baby Doll's mesmerizing dancing.
"I think the germ of the movie came from when we were talking about this sort of musical number I wanted to do," Snyder explained of the music of "Sucker Punch." "I thought it'd be cool to use this musical number as the spine of the movie, the spine of an action sequence, and then getting in and out of it would be, like, the music...

If you're a fan of director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen," "300"), you know that subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit. Going by the soundtrack to his new action/fantasy/teenage boy fantasy "Sucker Punch," this extends to every aspect of the process.
The film's soundtrack is comprised exclusively of covers of classic songs, including Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," The Smiths'' "Where Is My Mind" and The Stooges' "Search and Destroy." While no song matches the intensity of the original, Snyder reworked many of the selections to avoid the original sin of copying the source material wholesale.
So we get Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" turned into a jazzy noir number sung by "Sucker Punch" star herself Emily Browning. The cold, detached singing of Annie Lennox have transformed into the chanteuse vocals favored by singers like Julee Cruise in all those David Lynch films. Browning also appears on a cover...

Sony Music have announced the release of Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on March 28th, featuring artists including: Alison Mosshart, Carla Azar, Björk, Skunk Anansie and Queen.

Zack Snyder has gained a reputation for striking and stylish visuals in films such as 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians - and now he's also hoping to stimulate us on an auditory level.
A host of classic songs have been "wildly reimagined" for the soundtrack album for Snyder's fantasy adventure Sucker Punch, some of them performed by the film's stars.
Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will hit stores on March 28, 2011.

Releasing March 22nd, a few days before the film is released, the Sucker Punch soundtrack features some interesting songs and covers. I think the press release says it all, actually:
“Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300), collaborated with Grammy®-nominated composer and music director Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge!) and composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Californication) to select the collection of songs featured on the soundtrack, which play an integral role in the film.
“Working with Marius and re-teaming with Tyler on Sucker Punch’s soundtrack was an extraordinary experience,” said Snyder. “Sucker Punch is a film created with multiple levels of reality, so this same layered construct had to be considered and applied when approaching the music. The selection of songs we chose and the various ways in which they were each re-envisioned had to add depth, dimension and meaning to the sequences they exist within. Whether or not Sucker Punch turns out to be a watchable movie – and certainly myself and Simon have expressed & debated our doubts about that issue to some length this week – there’s a good chance it will at least have a pleasurable soundtrack.
Just like Zack Snyder’s meticulously hand-chosen track list for Watchmen included an eclectic taste of iconic tracks from all kind of music era’s and genres, Snyder has once again choose a wide selection of recognisable tunes for his latest action fantasy, many of which are covers sung by the cast themselves.
Lead Emily Browning seems to be the busiest as she has renditions of The Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’, The Smiths’ ‘Asleep’ and ‘Where Is My Mind?’ by the Pixies, though cast members Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac also cover Roxy Music’s ‘Love is the Drug’.

Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy masterpiece of the J. R. R. Tolkien classic, “The Lord of the Rings” is finally on BluRay and from many reports, it looks bloody amazing. Heck it looks bloody amazing already from the trailer for this Blu-Ray box set (see trailer below)! Not only is it immediately apparent how much work was put into the conversion to BluRay high definition quality, but it sounds like the world of Middle Earth is suddenly more real than ever. The added depth and detail lends a richness to every dimension an already visually-stunning trilogy of films.
While all this is fantastic, there’s a fly in this soup – die-hard fans of the trilogy are not so thrilled. Why? This release contains the three theatrical releases of the “Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “Return of the King” along with the same special features that came with those DVD sets.

The other day, I was perusing the iTunes homepage when I spotted a celebrity playlist unlike the rest. Usually, there is only one Mc narrating their ultimate mixtape but this time there were two. Not just any two — it was Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page who had put one together, together.
Listening to their banter back and forth gave me the giggles and darn it if I didn’t turn red and make my mind wander to some amazing far off places.
The point of the celebrity playlist is to basically show the world what terrible or incredible music taste a certain celeb has. At one point, Drew says, “Ellen’s got great taste and we share a lot in common and yet I feel like I’m always being turned on to new things by her." Oh I bet! I bet you get turned on by new things coming...
