At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

Hailed a “cultural phenomenon” by Newsweek and celebrated for years by the likes of This American Life, The Today Show, The Onion Av Club, & Entertainment Weekly, Mortified is a comic excavation of the strange and extraordinary things we created as kids. Witness adults sharing their most embarrassing adolescent journals, letters, poems, lyrics, plays, home movies, and art…in order to reveal stories about their lives. Hear grown men and women confront their past with tales of their first kiss, first puff, worst prom, fights with mom, life at bible camp, worst hand job, best mall job, and reasons they deserved to marry Jon Bon Jovi.
The project began in the late 1990s when founder Dave Nadelberg unearthed a notably awkward love letter and began sharing with friends. Formalizing as Mortified in 2002 with co-producer Neil Katcher, the project has since sifted through thousands of volumes of otherwise forgotten notebooks, photos, and...

Growing up is hard. Navigating social norms, cooties, bad hairdos, abiding by or raging against social mores, awkward post-pubescent sexual interactions, poor fashion choices. These experiences are universally uncomfortable, and stories about them can be incredibly entertaining. Dave Nadelberg knows this. That's why he created Mortified. Along with co-producer Neil Katcher, Nadelberg formally launched Mortified in 2002. It's basically a platform for the excavation of adolescence. Willing individuals sift through "otherwise forgotten notebooks, photos, and envelopes in an effort to crack the lid off our cultural shoebox and expose our inner geek," as well as draw the attention of Mortified's casting directors. Chosen participants present their findings to a (live or online) audience in a way that's equal parts curiosity, self-deprication, and catharsis. As the website goes, "There are a million stories buried in the pages of people's lives. Mortified's mission is to simply help people find them. Share the shame.
