Nominations for “The 76th Annual Writers Guild Awards” were announced on Wednesday, with “Days of our Lives” and “General Hospital” competing in the Daytime Drama category. Other shows receiving nominations in various categories include “The Crown,” “Abbott Elementary,” “The Last of Us” and “Succession.” Among films, “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” are looking to take home their respective trophies.
This year, “Days of our Lives” is competing against “General Hospital” after receiving a de facto win in 2023 due to no other show being nominated, and marking the show’s third consecutive win. Ron Carlivati leads the show’s writing team.
At “General Hospital,” outgoing writers Dan O’Connor and Chris Van Etten are receiving their final nominations as the show’s head writers. The two were let go in January after a shakeup behind the scenes.

The ongoing writers’ strike has hit “General Hospital”, forcing the soap to hire temporary ‘scab writers’ to keep production going.
News of the ‘scab writers’ picked up steam when a “Gh” writer, Shannon Peace, shared the information on her Instagram.
“Daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes,” she began in the caption. “We hate to see our characters and storylines handed over to ‘writers’ who cross the picket line. But we’re also keenly aware that stopping production could spell the demise of soap operas.”

Daytime soap opera “General Hospital” is using temporary writers while the WGA remains on strike, Variety has confirmed with sources.
News that the soap was employing writers despite the ongoing strike was brought to light by “General Hospital” writer Shannon Peace, who shared the news on her Instagram account, revealing that the last episode of the show that she wrote prior to the strike would be airing.
“Starting next week, the show will be written exclusively by scab writers, which is heartbreaking,” Peace wrote. “Daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes. We hate to see our characters and storylines handed over to ‘writers’ who cross the picket line. But we’re also keenly aware that stopping production could spell the demise of soap operas.”
ABC, which airs “General Hospital,” declined to comment.
Soap operas write and film episodes far in advance, which has allowed shows like “General Hospital” to stay on the air.

The ongoing writers’ strike has now impacted Port Charles: Deadline has confirmed that temporary writers have been hired by General Hospital to keep the daytime drama in production.
News of the change went viral Tuesday after Shannon Peace, a Gh writer, posted to her private account on Instagram that “scab writers” are now penning for the soap exclusively. “Daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes,” she wrote. “We hate to see our characters and storylines handed over to ‘writers’ who cross the picket line. But we’re also keenly aware that stopping production could spell the demise of soap operas.”
Her post was picked up on social media by actors like Bradley Whitford and Lisa Ann Walter, a longtime fan of daytime dramas who wanted to call out “scab writers putting the writers of these beloved soaps out of work.”
A spokeswoman for the ABC show declined comment.

General Hospital isn’t letting the Hollywood writers strike keep it from churning out new episodes.
The ABC daytime soap is now employing temporary writers — that is, writers who have agreed to work despite the strike — to pen upcoming episodes. Sources tell TVLine that so-called “fi-core” writers (or “financial core,” meaning they have rescinded their guild membership to pursue work) were brought on last week to start generating scripts in anticipation of the pre-strike stockpile running out. (Daytime soaps famously tape far ahead.) But episodes based on these scripts aren’t expected to be filmed until next month, when the...

One of TV's most iconic daytime soap operas might feel very different as new episodes roll out.
General Hospital brought in a team of temporary writers to write fresh episodes of the ABC series after the inventory of scripts written prior to the WGA strike ran out.
The daytime sudser is considered the first soap opera to take such a measure, with shows like Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless thought to have many more episodes in the can.
Shannon Peace, who serves as a breakdown writer on the series, explained the situation via Instagram.
"Starting next week, the show will be penned exclusively by scab writers, which is heartbreaking," she wrote earlier this month.
"Daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes."
"We hate to see our characters and storylines handed over to 'writers' who cross the picket line," Peace added.
