As Paramount’s British series “A Gentleman in Moscow” hopes to break into the highly competitive limited series races, the show has submitted for 20 Primetime Emmys, including lead actor for star Ewan McGregor and supporting actress for Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The eight-episode series follows an aristocrat, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, who spends decades banished to an attic hotel room following the October Revolution after being sentenced to house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal. Based on the 2016 novel by Amor Towles, the series was written by Ben Vanstone, who also serves as the executive producer and showrunner, and whose pilot episode titled “A Master of Circumstance” is submitted for consideration. The same episode will represent Sam Miller in the directing race, who has previously landed three Emmy bids: one for “Luther” in 2012 and two “I May Destroy You” in 2021.
The series received solid reviews from critics and boasted an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.
Monkey Man tells the story of Kid (Patel), a young man who tries to survive night after night in an underground fight club where, while wearing a monkey mask, he’s...

History may not look more favorably upon many directorial debuts than Dev Patel’s inaugural feature Monkey Man. The film is both a wholly entertaining action film and an emotional, rewarding tale of revenge and dramatic character growth and development.
The story of Monkey Man concerns itself with the legend of something called Hanuman – which is the embodiment of strength and courage – that is supposed to serve as a vessel of retribution for those unable to achieve so themselves. At this point, the character of Kid (Patel) is introduced as a young man trying to earn a living participating in an illegal fight club wearing a gorilla mask. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Kid has been scarred by some rather brutal childhood traumas. The result of these incidents initiates and fuels his methodical quest for revenge against the men who destroyed the idyllic life he once enjoyed.

With a premise that is as simple or as complex as you’d like it to be, Monkey Man anoints Dev Patel as a new action director and star. Filmed on location in Mumbai and Indonesia in the height of the Covid pandemic and saved from a Netflix direct-to-streaming deal by Jordan Peele and Universal, this film about reinvention bursts with the same frenetic energy of a Danny Boyle or John Woo picture, with Patel––co-writer, director, star, and sometimes camera operator––throwing everything he has at the screen, and then some.
The plot, on one level, is a simple revenge tale unfolding for reasons revealed at the narrative’s midpoint. Inspired by the Hindu myth of Hanuman Patel’s unnamed Kid embraces this persona in wrestling matches that have left him battle-tested before he undergoes a profound spiritual awakening. The training comes in handy when he plots his big...

Chadwick Boseman didn’t win a posthumous Oscar on Sunday, but there’s much to celebrate in the career of the prolific actor who proved that not even a cancer diagnosis could stop him from living out his dreams. In the four years after Boseman was secretly diagnosed with colon cancer, he shot “Black Panther,” and six other films culminating with his final onscreen performance in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” for which he earned SAG and Golden Globe awards in the best actor category, and an Oscar nomination.
To honor Boseman’s memory, we put together a list of his movies that you can buy on Blu-ray. The films listed are available through Amazon Prime,...

When director Edward Berger informed editor Tim Murrell and composer Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka) that he wanted each of the five episodes of Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose” to contain a different tone and style, they couldn’t have been more thrilled. Anchored by Benedict Cumberbatch’s tour de force performance as the drug-addled, upper class rebel from Edward St. Aubyn’s popular novels, it seemed the best way to convey the constantly shifting time periods and mental states.
“The challenge was finding the identity of each show,” said Murrell (who also edited AMC’s “The Terror”). “For the opening episode, there’s a frenetic, drug-fueled chaos and emotional turmoil of Patrick retrieving the ashes of his father [Hugo Weaving] in New York. Then, the second episode is the dark, slow burn [childhood flashback]. It’s the source of all the pain [stemming from his father’s sexual abuse]. The third episode is lighter and more gentle as you go through the party.

Chicago – It’s always nice to see world-famous filmmakers raising awareness about work from their lesser known peers. Where would Eli Roth be without Quentin Tarantino, or Neill Blomkamp be without Peter Jackson, or Danny McBride and Jody Hill be without the better half of Hollywood’s comedy titans? That’s why it’s nice to see “Evil Dead” creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert “hand pick” the indie horror films they admire, and then assist in their distribution.
Overall Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Raimi and Tapert’s “Ghost House Underground” series began last year with a collection of eight features that included the exuberant zombie satire “Dance of the Dead.” This year’s collection has shrunk to four features, none of which are as fun or memorable as last year’s “Dance.” Only one film manages to satisfy, while the other three vary in their degrees of mediocrity and failure. Let...
