Directed by: Tim Burton
Written by: John August
Featuring: Charlie Tahan, Martin Landau, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara
Kicking off Fantastic Fest this year was the world premiere of Frankenweenie, Tim Burton's latest effort. With it, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, because Burton's back to true form.
A Disney stop-motion remake of Burton's live-action short film from 1984 (which subsequently got him fired from Disney), Frankenweenie is the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young boy who brings his dog, Sparky, back to life after an unfortunate incident with a car. However, Victor's friends easily discover his secret, which predictably causes a town-wide catastrophe.
As perfect for adults as it is for kids (especially if you love horror), this is easily Burton's finest film in years. Sliding thankfully away from projects featuring a breakdancing Johnny Depp or vampires in the 1970s, Frankenweenie is heartfelt and adorable.
