The premise of "Air Force One" — President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) foils terrorists who hijack his plane, John McClane-style — requires national unity. The film calls for you to root for the president and only works if the majority of the audience (i.e. the U.S. population) sees their president as an unimpeachable good guy (pun intended). That is simply not the reality of America of 2024. "Air Force One" screenwriter Andrew Marlowe spoke to Syfy recently about why, to use the cliché, the film couldn't be made today.
"When we were doing it, the presidency and that position was not as politically charged as it is today. And so, I think that there are specific challenges about doing it in the contemporary climate that we would have to figure out."
Marlowe adds he'd only be interested in a follow-up if it reflected the world as is now: "Are we saying something new?...

Bruce Willis’ health forced him into retirement in March 2022 after decades of exploits as an actor. Debuting in 1980, the American retired actor gained mainstream recognition before the decade ran out with his performance in ABC’s comedy-drama series Moonlighting. Willis achieved global acclaim as an action hero playing John McClane in the Die Hard movies. He consolidated his Hollywood reputation with performances in several popular projects, from Pulp Fiction (1994) to The Fifth Element (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999), and Tears of the Sun (2003). With at least 150 acting credits to his name, Bruce Willis bagged dozens of...

Wolfgang Petersen's appealingly preposterous "Air Force One" required a specific type of leading man to work. The 1997 action-thriller is basically "'Die Hard' on a plane," so you couldn't cast an unstoppable hunk like Arnold Schwarzenegger as a U.S. president forced to save the day when his personal ride is hijacked. (Not that filmgoers would have necessarily bought Arnie as a politician at the time -- we were kind of naive that way.) What you needed was someone who specialized in playing John McClane-types, ergo the sort of action star whose characters were charming and handsome yet far from invulnerable. The film's creatives had the right idea when they tried to recruit Kevin Costner, but the Oscar-winner himself had an even better idea when he passed the script on to Harrison Ford.
We don't love Ford because he's unstoppable. In fact, his characters are imminently stoppable...

Back in Die Hard 2, John McClane uttered the legendary line: “How could the same shit happen to the same guy twice?” Foiling one terrorist plot is something – but getting tangled up in a second one? That’s seriously bad luck. Well, Idris Elba’s Sam Nelson is about to find himself in McClane mode: after navigating a high-stakes plane hijacking in Apple TV+’s Hijack, he’s going to be taking on another suspenseful situation in an upcoming Season 2. The streamer has confirmed that the show will be back for more, with Elba returning too.
Little is known about what the next season will entail. Will Nelson somehow find himself on another hijacked plane? Will it be another mode of transport altogether? Or will it sidestep the whole hijacking thing, and simply pit him in another generally hostage-based negotiation? Whatever it entails, Elba promises more excitement to come. “I...

Yippee-Ki-Yay, Moviegoers! Die Hard will be back in theaters next week, just in time for Christmas. But it’s not a Christmas movie…is it? It’s debated year after year: does the 1988 action flick qualify as a holiday film or not? According to many, yes. The holiday is even mentioned in AMC’s write-up: “A New York City cop faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a hostile invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.”
On the topic, we made our own case a few years ago that Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Personally, I can’t take that stance. Die Hard qualifies as “Christmas-adjacent”, like Lethal Weapon, In Bruges and Eyes Wide Shut. Christmas is part of the films in one way or another – typically being set during the holiday season – but it’s not a big enough part...

Plot: Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy from the creators of Cobra Kai that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.
Review: When an elite team of special forces, commandos, and spies team up to save the day, that is usually the end of the story. The credits typically roll on a happy ending once the bad guy is killed and the world is saved. The new series Obliterated looks at what happens when that celebration is premature in a blend of the team action of The A-Team with the drug and alcohol-fueled excess of The Hangover.

When Die Hard hit movie theaters in 1988, it marked a shift in the state of action movies. By this point, action movies were predominantly forefronted by the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who boasted heavily muscled physiques and portrayed larger than life heroes with epic kill counts. While this character trait still went on, Die Hard made the everyday man more conceivable as an action hero. The classic action movie follows NYPD policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he visits LA to reconcile with his wife. However, while attending his wife’s Christmas Eve party, the building is...

When we last hung out with Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley, he was wreaking havoc at a fictional Southern California amusement park (clearly based on Disneyland) while trying to apprehend the facility's chief of security, who murdered Foley's ill-tempered mentor, Inspector Todd (Gil Hill). If you're saying, "Uh, no, he was chasing the Eurotrash criminals who shot up his buddy Chief Bogomil (Ronny Cox)," you are one of the vast majority of moviegoers who skipped John Landis' "Beverly Hills Cop III."
Released over Memorial Day weekend in 1994, Murphy's third go-round as the fast-talking Detroit detective who keeps making unwelcome visits to Los Angeles to avenge dead or badly wounded friends arrived seven years after the last installment, and audiences had moved on. Whereas the first two movies grossed $316 million and $300 million worldwide (the bulk of that money being made in the U.S.), "Beverly Hills Cop III" only...

The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955. While he was born in Germany, his family relocated to New Jersey, USA, soon after. It was here where he would grow up before setting his sights on Hollywood. Although he is best known for his iconic role as John McClane in Die Hard, Willis has led an eclectic career that kickstarted years before the success of John McTiernan‘s action classic. By the time he became a global action star, he had already put plenty of groundwork into his career. This equipped Willis with a nuanced range that he utilised throughout his...

Die Hard is an unquestioned action masterpiece. Thanks to revelatory performances by both Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, plus John McTiernan’s assured direction, Die Hard still has the power to awe and entertain even decades after its release. Few can say the same about the sequels, but what about the Die Hard prequel, The Detective?
Oh, you’ve never heard of a Die Hard prequel? Well, that could be because the 1968 Frank Sinatra vehicle The Detective is based on the 1966 novel by the same name, written by Roderick Thorp. And in 1979, Thorp published a sequel to The Detective called Nothing Lasts Forever, in which criminals led by a man called Gruber take control of a Los Angeles high-rise during a company party. Gruber even holds hostage the family member of a hero cop who must go rogue upstairs if he is going to thwart the terrorists. Also it’s Christmas time.

When hanging out with your nerdy pals, there's a chance that one question will enter the conversation: "Which is the superior Hollywood Chris?" Most of your friends will be "Saturday Night Live"-avoiding Chris Evans fans since he's the All-American hunk, while others might side with "Extraction" franchise star Chris Hemsworth, as he's the perfect blend of a Golden Retriever and a Ken doll. And though there are other stars named Chris to choose from (including the dinosaur-fighting Pratt), there's one Chris that deserves the most respect: Chris Pine.
With his classic-meets-avant-garde aesthetic, Pine represents those who color outside the lines, enjoy lavender lattes with an extra shot of espresso, and listen to live recordings of Fleetwood Mac on rainy days. He's a performer who is immensely talented as an actor but also possesses the kind of dreamy singing voice that is impossible not to swoon over. Plus, Pine isn't afraid to laugh at himself,...

When Steven E. de Souza embarked on his big-screen adaptation of Capcom's arcade classic "Street Fighter II," the transformative upgrade on the ho-hum original, he painted a fire-engine red target on his back. The A-list action screenwriter of "48 Hrs.," "Commando" and "Die Hard" had more than earned the opportunity to make his directorial debut, but, in 1994, no one took video games seriously as a storytelling medium — and for good reason! Aside from role-playing computer franchises like "Ultima," "The Bard's Tale" and "Final Fantasy," most non-sports-centric games were either side-scrolling quests with the most slender of narratives or button-mashing combat competitions.
"Street Fighter II" fell in the latter camp. No one chugged Mountain Dew until sunrise because they wanted to know M. Bison's backstory; they did so to exert their console-controller primacy over their friends and dormmates. But Capcom's PvP sensation was so wildly popular that the video game...

If there’s one thing action fans love, it’s a sequel. We don’t want John McClane to have just one bad day dealing with terrorists. We want him to be in several wrong places at many wrong times. Lee Cronin’s “Evil Dead Rise” calls to mind those items we used to read before every “Die Hard” sequel, about how each had begun its life as a completely different story having nothing to do with “Die Hard” that was hastily re-written into another John McClane movie. That is not, as far as I know, the origin story of this “Evil Dead” sequel. But I wouldn’t be surprised to find it began its life as an entirely unrelated tale of a dysfunctional family fighting an evil force in a condemned apartment building before writers threw in a Book of the Dead and a chainsaw to help fill the opening weekend tills and keep the “Evil Dead” IP alive.

Every December, classic 1988 action movie “Die Hard” is the subject of numerous debates and memes about its status (or lack thereof) as a Christmas film. This year, though, the Ukraine government is celebrating the film’s story for a very different reason.
In a tweet from the Defense of Ukraine Twitter account released Monday, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine released an edited trailer for the Bruce Willis film, comparing the plot of the movie to this year’s invasion of the country from the Russian army. Set to “Carol of the Bells” from Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych and Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “Let it Snow,” the video cuts scenes from the film, which stars Bruce Willis as New York detective John McClane as he attempts to save hostages of a German terrorist takeover led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), with text describing the plot.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has released a Christmas-themed video comparing the fight against Russia to the 1988 Bruce Willis-starrer Die Hard.
The clip features an edited version of a trailer for the 1988 action pic, with Ukraine touting its new Himars system (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) and insisting the “underdog” will win.
“This Christmas, Ukraine celebrates the festive story of how an arrogant terrorist’s special military operation was thwarted by a scrappy underdog,” reads the text at the beginning of the video. It’s posted on Twitter alongside the caption “An underdog who wins against the bad guys. This is the kind of story we all enjoy. Dedicated to all the die hards on the front line. Ukraine will win! The Christmas season is advertised as a time for "peace on earth" and "goodwill toward men," but for a lot of us, the holidays are little more than a headache and a half. It's hard not to feel like such a Grinch this time of year when everyone else seems to be filled with joy, but fortunately, there are movies to help us anti-sentimentality Scrooges feel a little less alone. We've talked before on /Film about some of the best alternative Christmas movies (that aren't "Die Hard"), but we've never broken down why these films are so important. I might be acting overdramatic by calling these films "non-sentimental," as there's plenty of sentiment to be found in any story (as long as you know where to look), but I think we can all agree that the sentiment of something like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is in stark contrast to Bob Clark's "Black Christmas.

It's been a rough couple of years at the movies, but if 2022 proved anything, it's that capital-c Cinema still stands a chance. The blockbuster came back in a major way this year — and not just for the tried-and-true Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2022 was, for better or worse, the year of the spectacle: big budgets, big effects and even bigger risk. It made for a surprisingly great year for action, especially the films that pushed the limits of the genre or even evoked some good old-fashioned nostalgia.
It's not an easy thing, picking favorites — but with the end of the year upon us, now's as good a time as any to reflect on the greatest additions to the genre in 2022. Whether these 15 films broke big or cruised under the radar, whether they relied on technical achievements or dipped into low humor now and again, they still managed to raise our pulses in their own special way.

This article contains major spoilers for "Christmas Bloody Christmas."
Tis the season for Christmas slayings, as this year has granted us with not one, but two ho-ho-holiday beatdowns. Where "Violent Night" propped up David Harbour as a Santa Claus forced to go all John McClane on a group of mercenaries, "Christmas Bloody Christmas" goes in a much different direction. The new independent horror flick from director Joe Begos sees a robotic department store Santa (Abraham Benrubi) going on a small town killing spree after its wiring malfunctions.
The kicker is that the technology within was initially programmed by the Department of Defense, so if you're on his naughty list, he's not giving up until you're in the ground. "Christmas Bloody Christmas" is one of those cases where its brilliant premise results in a mixed bag of a slasher flick. The 16mm neon-drenched bloodbath succeeds when Benrubi lets loose, and less...
