Last year, Community blew its audience away with an episode featuring paintball that paid homage to every kind of action movie imaginable. We saw bits of Die Hard, Predator, Scarface, Terminator, The Warriors, and so on. For some “Modern Warfare” was the best episode of that first season. Then came news that Community would be doing a second paintball episode, a two-parter. Normally there’d be concern that it would tread over the same path, not be different enough. I wasn’t worried for a second. Soon enough it was teased that this paintball match would be western-themed and have much bigger stakes. But the question still remains: does the second paintball episode live up to the first?
The answer is simple. It exceeds it. Having only aired the first part, it’s already more funny and more emotionally investing, and epically sets up the second part that will air next week.
