After the success of the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel in 2019, Vivienne Medrano showed the potential that an adult animated musical series could offer. A potential that saw A24 joining into the animation space, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment as producer, leading to an eight episode season on Prime Video and a renewal for season 2. Joining Medrano on the project are songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg, who used multiple styles of music to give the series a more musical feeling than the pilot episode.
Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), daughter of Lucifer and princess of Hell, who dreams of opening a hotel with the (likely impossible) goal of rehabilitating demons to stop Heaven from coming down and culling their population once a year. [This story contains mild spoilers for season one of Hazbin Hotel.]
“On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. But for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto actress, showrunner Vivienne Medrano’s “weird, cool, fantastical imagination” has produced a series that is not only “delightfully horny, unhinged and ridiculous,” but uniquely special beyond its “small minutiae of cock jokes.
“It somehow manages to have this throughline of true gay love and this very big idea about whether it’s possible to redeem a soul, to change after being damned for all time,” she says of A24’s first foray into animation and Prime Video’s latest push into the medium’s R-rated adult space. “I just love Vivienne’s world-building.”
Broadway star and lead voice actress Erika Henningsen offers similar praise.

One of the most exciting new animated series this year is Hazbin Hotel, a Prime Video series from Vivienne Medrano that tells the surreal tale of Charlie Morningstar (voiced by Erika Henningsen), the princess of Hell, who tires of an annual purge whereby angels descend from Heaven to smite demons, and, along with her girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz), creates the Hazbin Hotel — a rehab clinic of sorts for those in Hell so that they can gain entry into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Hazbin Hotel, the first foray into animation for award-winning studio A24, is actually not new, despite having debuted on Prime Video just last Friday.
The R-rated musical comedy originated online as a 30-minute pilot in 2019 and quickly won over a fanbase that has largely stuck by it since its self-funded days. The series follows princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), who in an attempt to stop the angels from murderously purging her demonic subjects, opens a hotel to help rehabilitate them. The goal: Turn these sinners into saints unable to be wiped out by the (unsettlingly terrifying) angels.
She’s joined — in certain cases against their will — by friends, funders and her father (that’s Lucifer voiced by Jeremy Jordan). That includes Charlie’s grounded girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz); exasperated bartender Husk (Keith David); sex worker and rehabilitation Guinea pig Anthony “Angel Dust” (Blake Roman); Alastor the “Radio Demon...

Harmony, the Barry Manilow/Bruce Sussman musical that opened in November to good reviews that never translated to big audiences, will play its final performance at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, February 4.
Producers Ken Davenport, Sandi Moran and Garry Kief made the announcement this evening. At the time of its closing, Harmony will have played 24 previews and 96 regular performances. The musical began previews October 18 and opened November 13.
Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, Harmony tells the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, a German vocal group that achieved international fame and success in the 1920s and ’30 but were all but wiped from history by the Nazis. At the peak of its career, the group sold millions of records, made dozens of films and played to sold-out venues around the world.

Broadway loves a recognizable name, a famous band or singer that can fuel a jukebox musical on nostalgia and familiar tunes. To its credit, Harmony isn’t that.
If you’ve heard of the Comedian Harmonists, it’s likely that you’ve either seen Harmony or heard about it. Maybe you’re among the countless Barry Manilow fans who follow his every move (and he’s been trying to move with Harmony for decades). But otherwise, chances are good that you don’t know the Harmonists.
And exactly why you don’t know the Harmonists is the most intriguing aspect of Harmony, the new musical directed by Warren Carlyle opening on Broadway tonight. A Berlin-based vocal and comedy group of the 1920s and ’30s, the Comedian Harmonists were hugely popular, successful and famous in their day, selling millions of records, appearing in dozens of films and selling out major venues across the world,...

A new stage musical co-written by Barry Manilow opens tonight in New York, but the decades-in-the-making project will have to go on without Manilow there to support it: He has Covid.
“I am heartbroken to say that I have just tested positive for Covid-19 and won’t be able to attend tonight’s opening night performance of my new musical Harmony,” Manilow said in a statement. “This just might be the cruelest thing that has ever happened to me: 25 years waiting for this show to premiere in New York and I can’t attend.”
Manilow’s statement concludes, “Even in the face of this pandemic, we New Yorkers remain the toughest, staunchest people on the planet — so, put on a mask and go see a show!”
