Plot: In 1984, Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) tries to recruit Michael Jordan as a Hail Mary to save the fledgling basketball shoes division.
Review: Ben Affleck‘s Air allows the director to play to all his strengths as a director and actor. Like Argo, it shines a light on an intriguing event from the eighties, but unlike that film, the stakes here aren’t necessarily life and death. But, if you think the idea of a movie about Michael Jordan being signed to Nike is minor, you’d be wrong, as this is a truly involving, entertaining depiction of everything that went into the landmark deal. And this deal forever changed the way athletes are compensated the world over.
Matt Damon is at his best as the plucky Vaccaro. A passionate devotee of the game, he’s trying to put Nike on the map amongst basketball players at a time when Nike,...

Ben Affleck has been known to make the kind of old-school, supremely entertaining movies that make you want to bang your fists on the table and let out a “This is how you do it!”. And Air, unsurprisingly, is another one of his gambles that turns out to be a win for him and the everyone else involved. Without infusing his creation with too much gimmicky tension, Affleck makes you swoon over his instinctive mastery, with the story of a win echoing through the lobbies and the offices instead of the wild uproar of people witnessing Jordan’s magic on the court. There’s no big reveal to be found down the line with Air, which has found its name in the groundbreaking foundation of Air Jordan, a pair of shoes worn by a legendary basketball player. It’s about the wild passage one risky sports marketing deal provided for...

Air is a film directed by Ben Affleck starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck himself.
With the same narrative premise as in Good Will Hunting, these two great actors return, in different ways, to join forces and give us another great film in the purest good-feeling style of the eighties.
This time, from the corporate world of Nike and from the iconic marketing campaign about the sneakers of none other than Michael Jordan.
Air (2023) About the movie
Some people don’t like him and others like him great, but Mr. Ben Affleck won an Oscar for Argo and here he achieves again a round film that, within its scheme, works perfectly, managing to accomplish a whole vision of the business world behind professional sports, giving entity and credibility to the characters, knowing how to execute the narrative tempos and achieving great performances (including his own).

Chris Tucker started his career as a stand-up comedian, but ended up becoming one of the most beloved actors of ’90s pop culture. From his roles in movies like Rush Hour to his surprising appearances in music videos, Tucker always knew how to keep his fans on his toes. Without a doubt, one of Tucker’s best-known roles is in the cult-classic fantasy film The Fifth Element. As the outrageous talk show host Ruby Rhod, Tucker made the role his own. However, the role of Ruby was originally supposed to go to musician Prince, as Tucker revealed in a recent interview.

When director Ben Affleck first approached William Goldenberg, his Oscar-winning go-to editor (“Argo”), to cut “Air,” the sports biopic about Nike’s revolutionary Air Jordan basketball shoe line, it was only a couple of months before shooting began. Yet Goldenberg had to wait a month before reading the script while Alex Convery finished his rewrite.
It was a tight turnaround, but it led to a fast and loose production that perfectly fit the film’s recreation of the scrappy, underdog culture at Oregon-based Nike in 1984, which was then on the verge of bankruptcy.
“It’s about taking risks and greatness,” Goldenberg told IndieWire. “It’s about a lot of things that people can relate to…breaking out of the mold. And what’s great about working on a film like this is I have to watch the movie a lot, and I never got tired of it.”

Michael Jordan plays a pivotal role in the movie Air — and is even present in a few climactic boardroom pitch scenes — yet his face is not shown in the film aside from shots of magazine covers and snippets of archival footage of the real-life player.
It’s a bold choice as the Amazon Studios film — which has just opened in theaters — is all about Nike executives’ wooing of the NBA megastar and its creation of the Air Jordan shoe line. During a few key scenes where Jordan is present in a room, the production uses an actor who is typically shown from behind, or the camera will focus on his hands.
Before the film’s world premiere at the South by Southwest Film & Television Festival last month, Ben Affleck preemptively told the audience they would not see Jordan in the film and explained why.

Amazon Studios’ first post-covid theatrical gambit, “Air,” tells the mostly untold story of how Nike convinced a promising NBA rookie named Michael Jordan to sign with them over the market-dominating likes of Addidas and Converse. Directed by Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon alongside a packed ensemble cast, the film also stars Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans and Chris Messina and has debuted to mostly rapturous reviews and early-bird Oscar buzz.
It’s also the feature screenwriting debut of 25-year-old Alex Convery.
Plucked from obscurity to potential fortune and glory, the Black List-nominated screenwriter experienced a Hollywood-style Cinderella story when his spec script, written in the early days of Covid as he binged ESPN’s “The Last Dance,” got snapped up by Affleck and Damon and turned into the debut feature for their aspirational Artists Equity production company.

There are a good few ways to dramatise Michael Jordan’s landmark $2.5m sponsorship deal with Nike. One is telling the story of a young basketball rookie on the brink of legend status. Another is telling the story of his mother, Deloris Jordan, who refused to see her son exploited by corporate America. Air, Ben Affleck’s Eighties-set sports drama, chooses a third option: to platform the boardroom of largely white marketing men who successfully transformed a human being into a corporate slogan. It’s the least compelling perspective imaginable.
The success of Air depends on how willing audiences are to discard Jordan as a person in favour of Jordan as an idea. This is an individual even the film refers to as the “greatest competitive athlete in history” – but who does not speak, or even appear beyond the occasional glimpse of the back of his head (or that of...

Wow, the last few weeks at the multiplex could almost be summed up in a slight twist on the title of the signature tune of the movie’s most popular singing cowboy, “We’re Back in the 80s Again”. Who’d have thought that the “go-go” decade would be such fertile ground for current filmmakers? Now, there was music with Spinning Gold (though much of it covers the late 70s), and the toy/game trifecta of D&d, the Mario Bros., and Tetris. Well, this new release concerns a big fashion item, though it has similar themes to that last film. Like that story, its main focus isn’t the “product”, but the hustling guy (like Henk) who will risk everything for a “piece of the pie” (as...

Did you know that Michael Jordan makes $400 million a year in passive income due to the percentage he gets from the sale of Air Jordans? To understand how this came to be, we must travel back to the 1980s and the campus of famed sneaker label Nike. The story is the subject of Ben Affleck’s newest film Air. Written by Alex Convery, the movie stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman and Julius Tennon.
Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) likes to gamble — i.e. he likes to take risks. He works for Nike CEO Phil Knight (Affleck) as the company’s basketball division expert. Sonny Vaccaro knows his basketball. As played with reliable conviction by Matt Damon, the head scout in Nike’s dwindling hoops division has a keen eye for the next great players, attending high school all-star tournaments around the country and scanning for potential endorsements. But Sonny is also a gambler, and on the tail end of his trips he jets over to Las Vegas to lock in a couple parlays, betting on NBA money lines and spreads before throwing all his winnings away at the craps table a minute later. You get the sense this has become his beleaguered ritual. At some point those basketball instincts and his penchant to go for broke will align and finally pay off.
It’s a shrewd preview of what’s to come in Air, director Ben Affleck’s entertaining, workmanlike retelling of how Vaccaro helped an underdog shoe company sink a half-court heave...

You know the man, you know the legend, you know the shoe, but do you know the story of how the shoe, and the legend, became one? Air has got you. About six years ago, this film writer was walking along Oxford Street when he noticed the biggest queue outside a shop he’d ever seen. Hundreds of people – teenagers and adults alike – standing patiently for the doors to fly open and to be let inside to be some of the first to grab a new collector’s item. That item was a new pair of Air Jordans. Limited to one per customer, fans were trying to persuade strangers to join the queue and get them a second pair for a reward, just so they had a spare. Or, of course, to resell them. The point is, Air Jordans, even to this very day, are such a must-have in people...

Ben Affleck wants to make sure you know that his new movie as a director, Air, is set in 1984. The film opens with a blizzard of images and sounds from that time, ranging from Ronald Reagan’s reelection to the “Where’s the beef?” Wendy’s commercials, to just about any other specific visual cue you can think of from that year. Once that’s over, however, the needle drops pick up the slack almost to a fault: We hear the “you’re motoring” line from Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian” in a shot of a car in motion. Meanwhile Big Country’s “In A Big Country” blares over another shot of a car driving through the wilds of North Carolina.

When Ben Affleck’s already critically beloved “Air” arrives in theaters next month, audiences will be treated to some serious star power on the big screen, with Affleck himself taking on the role of Nike founder Phil Knight, plus Matt Damon as marketing guru Sonny Vaccaro and Viola Davis and her real-life husband Julius Tennon as Michael Jordan’s parents Deloris and James.
Not present, however, is Jordan himself. While Affleck and Amazon Studios haven’t hidden the fact that “Air,” which chronicles Vaccaro’s attempts to sign a then-rookie Jordan to the floundering Nike label, barely includes the basketball superstar, Affleck’s actual reason for the artistic choice has been less discussed.

Director Ben Affleck’s “Air” invites audiences into Nike headquarters to experience the story behind the popular shoe that was built solely for the most legendary athlete of all time, Michael Jordan.
Set in 1984, Affleck stars as Nike founder Phil Knight. The Good Will Hunting pair costar as the clothing giant’s cofounder Phil Knight (Affleck) and executive Sonny Vaccaro (Damon). Affleck also directs.
The story begins in 1984 when Nike is then just the third-biggest shoe company in the industry, and Vaccaro is charged with growing the company’s basketball division.
To do so, Vaccaro embarks on a quest to sign a certain rookie basketball player named Michael Jordan, coming up against his protective mother Deloris Jordan, played by Viola Davis.
The result is, of course, the development of one of the most iconic shoes of all time, the Air Jordan, which was largely responsible for Nike overtaking its biggest competitor, Adidas.
“This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the uncompromising...

For those of us who don’t know our Nike basketball shoe history, the trailer for Ben Affleck’s Air pretty much lays out the entire story. Affleck stars in and directs a retelling of the true story of how Nike’s decision to take a chance on Michael Jordan changed the company’s fortune.
The trailer arrived online prior to the film’s Super Bowl spot and was accompanied by six new photos.
Affleck stars as Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his offscreen Bff Matt Damon, who he’s never directed in a feature film up until Air, plays Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro (the man who made it all happen.) The cast also includes Viola Davis as Michael Jordan’s mom, Deloris Jordan. Jason Bateman plays Rob Strasser, Chris Messina is David Falk, Marlon Wayans is George Raveling, Chris Tucker is Howard White, Matthew Maher is Peter Moore, Gustaf Skarsgård is Horst Dassler,...

Somewhere in the multiverse, there's a reality where Ben Affleck directed and starred in "The Batman," resulting in a very different David Fincher-styled take on the Caped Crusader than the one Matt Reeves gave us in 2022. Instead, the true story basketball industry drama "Air" will serve as Affleck's long-awaited return to the director's chair and the followup to his 2016 period gangster flick, "Live By Night." Despite being generally considered Affleck's first real misfire behind the camera (though he still has fond feelings about it), that movie's not enough on its own to make you forget about his gripping direction on "Gone Baby Gone" or the propulsive thrills he delivered with "The Town" and "Argo" (even with the way the latter bends the facts of the actual historical events that inspired it and resorts to stereotypes in its depiction of the Middle East).
Thankfully, "Air" finds Affleck operating more in...

Pictures handling international as part of its distribution pact with Amazon’s MGM.

Some great news for exhibition Monday morning: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical-release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, starring his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner Matt Damon.
Air will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, heading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
I hear Air will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It truly is a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling international as part of its distribution pact with Amazon’s MGM. Amazon Studios only had U.S. on Late Night, not global rights.

Exclusive: Joel Gretsch (All Rise) and Gustaf Skarsgård (Oppenheimer) are the latest additions to the cast of Ben Affleck’s Nike film for Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures. They join a star-studded ensemble led by Matt Damon and Affleck in the as-yet-untitled sports marketing pic, which will ultimately premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The drama has Damon playing maverick sneaker salesman and former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, with Affleck as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, in a story about Nike’s long-shot effort to sign Michael Jordan to its shoe company in the mid-’80s. It was an endorsement that seemed impossible at the time, but would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and an athlete ever, and launched the global, multibillion-dollar contemporary sneaker industry. Pic’s ensemble will also include Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan,...
