- Paul Swain joined the Army in 1995 aged 17 and after passing training was posted to the 9th/12th Royal Lancers. Prior to service he had excelled in sport and continued this on by representing the army on many occasions. As he worked his way up the ranks, Paul became a gunner, then tank commander in charge of a troop of soldiers. As well as being an instructor in disciplines such as weapons, drill, physical training and map reading, Paul served all over the world, with operational tours in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Throughout his military career, Paul organised his own charity DJ events, seeing him spin the decks alongside some of the worlds most recognised artists. Promoting to Staff Sergeant and deploying on Operation Herrick 14, Paul's role was to mentor the Afghan National Army. During a routine patrol, Paul's interpreter stood on an improvised explosive device (IED) after wandering out of the designated safe zone. The interpreter was unfortunately killed while Paul was caught in the blast at close range.
He lost his left arm below the elbow and suffered flesh wounds and damage to his internal organs. Paul was kept on life support and in hospital for eight weeks while he underwent over 25 operations to fight the infections and multiple injuries he had endured. The year that followed was intense rehabilitation, learning to adapt with the use of one arm. It was at the rehabilitation centre that Paul was introduced to the On Course Foundation. The Foundation provides work experience and full time employment for wounded service personnel through the sport of golf. Although Paul hadn't played golf since he was a child, his love for the game was rekindled and he began to compete in tournaments, including representing Great Britain against the United States on multiple occasions, sinking the winning putt on the inaugural Simpson Cup. In addition to the On Course Foundation, Paul is involved with Battle Back Golf and has represented them twice in an annual tournament against his American counterparts. He has been the Battle Back Golf Champion, twice! Today, Paul keeps himself busy with a multitude of occupations. He set up his own physical training and nutrition advice business. He's no stranger to the screen and has featured in a HBO series and films
In 2018 he completed a challenge to reach Base Camp Everest, raising funds for supporting military charities.
On top of this, Paul invests in property and start up companies. He also volunteers as a driver for the elderly and vulnerable.
