Very few franchises that have been running for two decades can say they've had the benefit of the same steady hands guiding the ship the whole way. But that is indeed something the "Ice Age" series can claim, as producers Lori Forte and John C. Donkin have been there since the first movie in 2002, and haven't departed since. Even following the Disney/Fox merger, they've stayed put to help guide the family-friendly flicks into the streaming age with "The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild."

A new “Ice Age” movie is on the way, but this one’s heading directly to streaming.
Disney+ unveiled the official trailer for “The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild” on Tuesday, a new film in the “Ice Age” franchise that puts Simon Pegg’s one-eyed weasel Buck front and center. Eager for a little independence, possum brothers Crash and Eddie set out to find a place of their own but soon find themselves trapped beneath the ice in a massive cave inhabited by dinosaurs. They are rescued by the one-eyed, adventure-loving weasel Buck Wild, and together, with the help of some new friends, embark on a mission to save the Lost World from dinosaur domination.
The film was originally being developed as a Buck Wild TV series spinoff, but when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, the story was re-developed as a feature film. The first five “Ice Age” films...

Editor’s note: Before he founded and became CEO of the Universal-based animation factory Illumination, Chris Meledandri was tasked with building an animation division at Fox. Early on, the president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation in 1998 acquired Blue Sky Studios for the studio. The Westchester, NY-based animation company might have started as an adjunct to Fox’s Hollywood animation operation, but that changed when Meledandri gave Blue Sky the room to grow, and the result was the multibillion-dollar Ice Age franchise. Meledandri, who would start Illumination and hatch another multibillion-dollar franchise in Despicable Me. Here, he laments the decision by Disney to shutter Blue Sky and celebrates its origins.
Hearing the sad news of the closing of Blue Sky Studios brings back the memories of our journey together. It was 1996 and I was running the animation division at Fox.

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). As you can see below, 47 women other than actresses were nominated at the 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home Oscars.
Only one category — Costume Design — had more women contending then men but the winner was a man: Mark Bridges (“Phantom Thread”), who also picked up the jet ski for the shortest acceptance speech.

The Producers Guild of America gave out their top film prizes this weekend. The PGA is often indicative of which movie will win Best Picture on Oscar night.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missourihas been sweeping the awards race so far this year, but it looks like the edge may be given over to The Shape of Water, which won the coveted PGA on Saturday night. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the film's biggest competition for a Best Picture Oscar at this rate. The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees, to go along with yesterday’s nominations by the Art Directors Guild and the Writers Guild of America. Having this troika of guilds is an important moment in the awards season, especially with the flashier Golden Globe ceremony just two days away. With just the Directors Guild of America still to announce, a solid portion of the precursors that matter for the major categories have had their say, nomination wise at least. Academy Award voting is getting underway too, so this information is vital. By next week, many voters will have made their ultimate choices and submitted ballots. This trio of precursors has helped establish some films as potentially sitting pretty with Oscar. The Adg nominations basically just narrowed the field to 15 in Best Production Design, give or take a few. The WGA nominations gave I, Tonya a big boost,...

Nominees for the Producers Guild of America Awards have been revealed, capping off a busy award season week that has already included the Palm Springs Film Festival’s awards gala, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Art Directors and Writers Guild nominations, and the makeup and hairstyling Oscar shortlist — all leading up to Sunday’s Golden Globes.
For the first time, as the result of a tie among the 8,200 PGA voters, not 10 but 11 films will vie for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer, including “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “The Post,” and “Wonder Woman.” Winning this PGA Award typically bodes well for a film’s Best Picture Oscar chances, although last year that was not the case (“La La Land” won at the PGAs, “Moonlight” prevailed at the Academy Awards).

As Blue Sky delivers the 5th in the Ice Age franchise, we look at the story of sabre-toothed critter Scrat, the hit nobody expected…
The old saw that success has many fathers but failure is an orphan goes double for the movies. Everyone wants to share the glory of a hit while the misses are curiously only ever the responsibility of someone else.
That’s borne out in the case of Scrat, the breakout star of the Ice Age series. Had audiences not responded so ardently to the hapless critter’s appearance in the first film’s trailer, the tale of his creation would likely have been consigned to Blue Sky Studios’ memory dump. As Scrat turned out to be a huge, franchise-building success, the sabre-toothed squirrel seems to have more origin stories going around than Spider-Man.

12 Years A Slave and Gravity have tied at this year’s PGA. With American Hustle taking the SAG ensemble on Saturday night, we have a bonafide Best Picture race on our hands folks! This is the first tie for the top film in Producers Guild Award history.

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.
The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. Included in the documentary nominations are A Place at the Table, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Life According to Sam, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks...

I’ve been a fan of John Leguizamo’s films for a long time but, until Continental Drift, had never seen an Ice Age movie before. I guess it never really struck me as a must-see.I have no kids but my nieces and nephews are always watching the first one so I feel like I get my fill whenever I visit them.
First of all I recommend this fourth one. It’s funny and lighthearted and carries with it a great message of family. I was excited to talk to John about his career and his character in this series. Having three comedians in the lead role (Leguizamo stars with Ray Ramano and Dennis Leary) means that the funny comes fast and furious but Sid the sloth remains the film’s comic relief.
