In 1988, Bruce Willis committed a most grievous offense against entertainment journalists: he proved them wrong. Really wrong. Laughably wrong.
The newly minted star of ABC's "Moonlighting" drew the ire of just about everyone in Hollywood when 20th Century Fox paid him a whopping $5 million to star in the action film "Die Hard." This rankled rival studio executives, who only shelled out that kind of cash for long-established leading men like Warren Beatty and Robert Redford. While Willis might've been a minor media sensation due to "Moonlighting," with his surprise Billboard smash "The Return of Bruno" and his omnipresent Bartles and Jaymes wine cooler commercials, he had yet to prove himself worthy of a $5 million big-screen payday.
Before "Die Hard," Willis had scored a solid theatrical hit with Blake Edwards' dismally unfunny "Blind Date." This was the extent of his motion picture oeuvre when Fox declared him a massive marquee name.

The View has been around since 1997 and has held its ground ever since. Though hosts and moderators have changed based on ratings, the times, and general popularity, it is still very popular. When Whoopi Goldberg took over the moderator position in 2007, it was a huge deal. She is a powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with. In the 1970s, Dolly Parton embarked on lengthy tour legs with members of her band. They traveled together by bus and spent weeks at a time away from home. Though Parton was married by this point, it didn’t take long before people began to whisper rumors of her flirtations with members of her band. Her former guitarist spoke about the affectionate way she treated people.
Dolly Parton was affectionate with members of her band
When Barbara Walters interviewed Parton in 1977, she asked the singer if there was any “hanky-panky” on the tour bus.
“Well, that depends on what you mean by hanky-panky,” Parton responded, per the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “We do a lot of celebratin’ on the bus. Let’s put it that way. If there’s really something to celebrate, if we want to stop and buy some wine or some champagne, if there’s somethin’ really nice.

Dolly Parton has been with her husband for decades, and she has joked about her flirtations with other men for nearly as long as they’ve been together. She danced around rumors of affairs for years. Her husband, Carl Dean, keeps his goings-on out of the public eye, but he once called Parton to inform her that he was on a date. Parton was well acquainted with his partner.
Dolly Parton’s husband took her former teacher on a date
Parton’s career took her away from home often, leaving Dean alone. This meant that when people came to town, it may be up to him alone to entertain them. Once, while she was on tour, Parton’s first grade teacher called on the couple.
“I go to Nashville about twice a year and Dolly’s folks were always saying I should call her when I came down,” her former teacher,...

Barbara Walters was one of the most influential people to ever hit the American airwaves, but her story was more complex than just being a trailblazer of network news. Hitting shelves on Tuesday, April 23, is Susan Page’s The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters, a biography chronicling her entire life and career. The book is rich with details about what made Walters tick even as a child and how cutthroat she could be when it came to protecting her hardwon place atop ABC News. There are a lot of details in the book that are uplifting, saddening, and downright shocking. Here we’ll outline a few of the most surprising things we learned about Barbara Walters from The Rulebreaker. She didn’t like SNL parodies of her, but warmed up to them in a touching way On the one hand, being impersonated on SNL is something of...

Katie Couric said that her first maternity leave from NBC’s Today show in 1991 was met with an “incredibly sexist attitude” from co-anchor Bryant Gumbel.
“He got mad at me because I was doing something on maternity leave,” Couric recalled with some laughter on Sunday’s Club Random podcast with Bill Maher. “And he was giving me endless shit for taking like a month or two off. I was having my first baby.”
Couric recalled Gumbel telling her, “Why don’t you just drop it in the field and come back to work right away or something?” She acknowledged “he was goofing on me” but still said his comments were “emblematic of sort of an incredibly sexist attitude.”
Couric’s recollection of the incidents was prompted earlier in the episode when Maher brought up Gumbel, referring to him as a “guy’s guy” and saying the two are “friends.”

When the O.J. Simpson murder trial aired on televisions across the United States in 1995, no one could foresee the lasting impact it would have on the entertainment industry.
For nearly a year, the world watched as the former NFL star, who died on Wednesday after a battle with cancer, defended himself against accusations of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was represented by a group of lawyers notoriously referred to as The “Dream Team” — including Robert Shapiro, Johnnie Cochran, and Robert Kardashian.

Brian Teta, the executive producer of The View, has signed a new contract for the show that will keep him at the often buzzy daytime talker for the next four years.
The show has been up 3% in total viewers season to date, and has continued to top daytime talk shows and news programs in viewership and households. There are signs of an election-year influence in the uptick: The day after the Iowa caucuses, when ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jon Karl guested, the show’s 2.85 million viewers was its most watched telecast in nearly two years.
“Every time there’s a big moment in the news cycle, whether it’s the State of the Union, or a Republican debate or anything like that, I see a spike the next morning, even in pop culture world where it’s something like the Oscars,” Teta said. “People are tuning in to see...

Jennifer Lawrence has always been candid about her experiences regarding body image in Hollywood. And although many actors were willing to shave weight for features, there was a limit to the weight Lawrence would shed.
Jennifer Lawrence didn’t want to be stick thin for film roles Jennifer Lawrence | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Lawrence didn’t mind getting into shape for movie roles. She’s used to undergoing changes in her diet and training regimen for films like the X-Men franchise. But in The Hunger Games, Lawrence chose not to shed weight for the role. The series saw her playing impoverished character Katniss Everdeen, who’d go on to become the hero of the series. Given the character’s condition, it might’ve made sense for Katniss to look underfed. But Lawrence didn’t want to promote an unrealistic body image to her fans.

Many actors had some of their best and most interesting interviews with the late Barbara Walters. But there was a point where the iconic journalist grew discouraged with covering Hollywood stars.
Barbara Walters didn’t want to chase the tabloids anymore Barbara Walters | Stephen Lovekin/WireImage
Walters was known for her versatile and in-depth interview coverage. She’d spoken to a variety of different subjects, all ranging from politicians to celebrities, and never shied away from asking hard-hitting questions. But overtime, the 20/20 host grew disillusioned with talking to celebrities. This was because celebrity news became more accessible at the time, which meant Walters had a lot more competition than before.
“It seems to permeate most of the tabloids and the magazines and now you have six or seven entertainment programs,” she once said according to The Hollywood Reporter. “You didn’t used to have that. It’s a different...

The late night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" is still going strong. The series is currently in the middle of its 49th season, and word on the street is that there's quite the celebration around the corner for the show's 50th anniversary, which will come around this fall. There have been rumblings that series creator and longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels may step down from his post at "SNL" when the 50th season is over, but there hasn't been any confirmation just yet, even though Tina Fey seems to be primed to take the gig if that happens. However, there's another big "SNL" event coming soon too, in the form of a movie about the show's premiere on October 11, 1975.
Last spring, Sony Pictures set director Jason Reitman to direct "SNL 1975," a movie that will chronicle the real-time, behind-the-scenes chaos and miraculous magic leading right up to the show's debut on NBC.

The In Memoriam segment of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday paid a moving tribute to several television stars, creators and producers who have died over the last year — but social media was quick to point out the omissions.
Users on X, formerly Twitter, were upset that missing from the video montage of the In Memoriam segment were Ryan O’Neal and Ray Stevenson. O’Neal, who died Dec. 8 at age 82, had television credits stretching back to the 1960s, and he had notable roles on the soap Peyton Place and the sitcom Good Sports and also had a run on Bones.
Stevenson, who died May 23 at age 58, was most recently seen in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka, and worked consistently in television since the 1990s. His notable television credits include Vikings, Dexter and Rome.

Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers took the stage at the 2023 Emmys to pay tribute to their former colleague Norman Lear, in addition to other notable television figures who passed away since the previous ceremony.
Charlie Puth and The War and Treaty — comprised of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter — performed the former’s hit 2015 song “See You Again” for the In Memoriam segment. They finished the segment with a rendition of the Friends theme song that coincided with Matthew Perry being featured as the final name in the video tribute.

Matthew Perry received an emotional tribute during the 2023 Emmys In Memoriam segment, which also included late stars such as Len Goodman, Andre Braugher, Lance Reddick, Paul Reubens, Barbara Walters, Angela Lansbury, Kirstie Alley and more. Pop singer Charlie Puth and singer-songwriter duo The War and Treaty performed during the segment, first starting with a rendition of Puth’s “See You Again” before delivering a stripped-down cover of the “Friends” theme song (“I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts).
Perry died unexpectedly on Oct. 28, 2023 at 54 years old. He was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, according to law enforcement. There were no signs of foul play or drugs on the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later revealed that he died from “the acute effects of ketamine.”

The holiday song “White Christmas” is one of the most unforgettable songs of the holiday season. Bing Crosby made it iconic, but did he ever get sick of singing “White Christmas?”

Think about some of the most iconic moments in modern TV history, and there’s a good chance Don Mischer was in the control room.
Michael Jackson performing the Moonwalk for the first time on “Motown 25.” Muhammad Ali making a surprise appearance to light the Atlanta Olympics opening ceremony torch. Prince pulling off arguably the most lauded Super Bowl halftime show ever, in the pouring rain. President Obama’s historic inauguration.
Mischer was behind all those events — and too many more to mention, including three Oscar telecasts. Each one has a story, and as Mischer recalls, the behind- the-scenes drama was often harrowing. Ask him about the time he got into a fight with authorities in China, leading his team to prep a van in case they had to flee for the U.S. Embassy. Or the time he and Barbara Walters got dangerously close to offending the shah of Iran,...

Before “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” became synonymous with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, the song from Michael Bay’s 1998 science fiction disaster flick Armageddon had its beginnings in another romance. Performed by Aerosmith, the power ballad was written by prolific song writer Diane Warren, who was inspired by an exchange between Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin.
In her new memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand writes about lying in bed with Brolin one night, when he told her, “I don’t want to fall asleep.

Song ideas can come from anywhere. Case in point: the Aerosmith song I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, the group’s first No. 1 hit, was inspired by Barbra Streisand’s romance with husband James Brolin.
In her memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand recalled being in bed with Brolin. He told her, “I don’t want to fall asleep.” Asked why, he replied: “‘Cause I’ll miss you.'”
Streisand told the story in a 1997 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters. Songwriter Diane Warren was watching, and she jotted down the statement, later using it in the lyrics for I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.
The song was later used in the film Armageddon, getting an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
“It was so gratifying to see so many people responding to Jim’s words,” Streisand wrote. “Well, no wonder… so did I!” She later claimed it...

Robbin Bain, who was the fashion and beauty expert on NBC‘s Today during the early 1960s, died in Southampton, NY, on October 21. She was 87. Her daughter Lara McLanahan told Deadline that she had been battling breast cancer. Known to viewers as “Today Girl,” she joined the NBC show in 1961 to discuss fashion, cosmetics and other female-led topics. She worked alongside the host John Chancellor and news anchor Frank Blair. However, she only stayed in the role for two months, leaving the show after she became pregnant with daughter Dina. “I was the only woman, with the exception of the makeup woman, on the set,” she recalled during a 2012 TV reunion of “Today Girls.” Deborah Norville and Robbin Bain during the “Today” show’s 60th anniversary episode TV icon Barbara Walters, who died last year, was also a “Today Girl” early in her career after joining the show in 1961 as a writer and researcher.

“One night, Barbara invited Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick,” remembers Pamela Gross, the former CNN producer and close friend of the late Barbara Walters. “She had a beautiful piano in her living room, and after dinner, Barbara and Sarah and Matthew gathered around the piano and started singing old tunes, and the rest of us were just pinching ourselves. It was such a special night, but that’s the way Barbara lived.”

Upon the release of her 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, Priscilla Presley sat down with Barbara Walters to explain her objectives in writing the book: “[Elvis] was a human being, that’s the aspect I’m trying to show. That’s all. That was the intent of the whole book: to show a love story, a man, a human. Not the performer, not the image, not the idol.” In many ways, this is also the aim of the average biopic: to pull back the curtain separating public from private, to reveal the “truth” behind legends and complicate accepted narratives. Priscilla Presley noticed her relationship with Elvis Presley suffered whenever his career dipped. Unfortunately, career success didn’t exactly help their marriage. While Elvis wasn’t prone to mood swings when he was enjoying his career, there was still a distance between them. Priscilla explained why she felt her marriage became superficial when Elvis’ career began to improve.
Priscilla Presley felt a growing distance between herself and Elvis when her career improved
In 1968, Elvis had the opportunity to film a TV special. He hadn’t appeared on television in years and had recently experienced a series of career disappointments. This special allowed him to take creative control for the first time in several years, which he found thrilling. He threw himself into preparations for it.

Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were arguably the most popular couple of the late '90s and early 2000s. Between their childhood sweethearts love story, matching denim outfits, and sweet moments together, there really was nothing not to obsess over. While many fans expected to see them together for years to come, their romance ended abruptly in 2002. It didn't take long for cheating rumors to surface, and Timberlake didn't deny or try to hide the fact that Spears broke his heart. In a 2002 "20/20" interview with Barbara Walters, the "Bye Bye Bye" singer gave a very vague answer when asked if Spears had been unfaithful during their relationship. "Honestly, you know, we're not perfect. I don't judge anybody. It's just young love," he said. ". . . It was a very intense relationship, that's for sure."

Sherri Shepherd staged a View reunion by having Joy Behar on Sherri on October 11, and the former co-hosts shared a shocking story about the late Barbara Walters and Richard Pryor during their interview. According to Shepherd, the late comedian Paul Mooney told her years ago that he walked in on Walters and Pryor hooking up. The story came up when Shepherd was ribbing Behar about their time together on The View. As Shepherd teased, “You liked it that I was scared of Barbara Walters. You used to laugh.” “What was scary about her?” Behar said, as Shepherd replied, “I don’t know. She was just so formidable … I would tell you stuff and then you would go and tell it.” Then came the… intimate details about their former colleague, who died in December 2022 (Pryor died in 2005). “I never told this before, but I’m going ...

Blink-182 have shared “Dance with Me,” the latest single from their upcoming album One More Time….
One More Time… is Blink’s first new album since the return of guitarist Tom DeLonge, so it’s not too surprising to see them lean into the nostalgia factor with “Dance with Me.” In its cheeky music video, the band seem to poke fun at not only themselves, but the punk purists who called them sellouts back in the day. The clip starts with a faux TV interview, in which the band all appear to be doing their best Joey Ramone cosplay: “What the hell is punk? And is it punk that I said ‘hell?'” a Barbara Walters-esque hosts asks.
“Dance with Me” isn’t the most punk tune around, but it has all the major tenets of a Blink-182 song: Breakneck drums, zippy guitar riffs, a chorus about “doin’ it all night long,...

Elvis Presley’s ‘Long Deep Passionate Kisses and Caresses’ Left Priscilla Presley ‘Weak With Desire’
Elvis Presley met Priscilla Presley when she was just 14. She reportedly fell hard for the king of rock and roll but didn’t know if their relationship would evolve further as he was 10 years her senior. Priscilla once admitted it was hard to resist Elvis physically during that time, claiming his “long, deep, passionate kisses and caresses” left her “weak with desire.”
Priscilla Presley’s desire for Elvis Presley began in 1959
Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu met in the late 1950s when he was stationed in Germany as a soldier in the United States Army. She was just 14, and he was 24 when they were first introduced.

The View creator Barbara Walters struck fear in Debbie Matenopoulos when she was one of the co-hosts at the iconic table. Matenopoulos was nervous to sit next to Walters at the table, but also grateful to have worked for her. In a recent interview, Matenopoulos recalled how Walters would quietly “church pinch” her under the table every time she slipped up on camera.
The experience was so stress-inducing that she was relieved when she earned a new seat, away from Walters, at the table. Matenopoulos also revealed how one of the scariest on-camera experiences became a valuable learning moment in her career, thanks to Walters.

Whoopi Goldberg has tested positive for Covid-19 again, a diagnosis that resulted in her missing the Season 27 premiere of “The View.”

Another season of The View is officially in the books. The Season 26 finale on Friday, August 4 capped a year of relative stability for the daytime talk show, which struggled to find its footing after the 2020 election and the departure of longtime conservative co-host Meghan McCain. Over the course of this season, McCain's replacement, Alyssa Farah Griffin, developed an easy rapport with the other ladies, and her presence brought an air of calmness to a show that's long been defined by on- and off-screen conflicts. Not to mention, The View's return to normalcy served as a fitting tribute to the show's creator Barbara Walters, who died on December 30, 2022 at the age of 93.

Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele is alleging that the late broadcast journalist Barbara Walters elbowed her backstage at The View.
The veteran sportscaster appeared on a recent episode of The Megyn Kelly Show where she accused The View creator of assaulting her following a segment about former U.S. President Barack Obama, while also discussing her controversial departure from ESPN. During the conversation, Steele stated there were other witnesses to the alleged physical altercation prompted by Walters, who was the creator of, as well as a co-host and producer on, the show for more than 15 years and died in 2022.
“It was Barbara, Whoopi [Goldberg] and myself in the dark green room off to the side,” Steele recalled during the podcast episode, which released Thursday. “I was probably about four feet from the wall and the trash can and Barbara was standing over here in front of me.”

Sage Steele, the veteran sportscaster who recently left ESPN after settling a lawsuit with the sports media giant, has accused the late Barbara Walters of assaulting her backstage during an appearance on “The View.”
“It was Barbara, Whoopi [Goldberg] and myself in the dark green room off to the side,” Steele said on an episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show” Thursday. “I was probably about four feet from the wall and the trash can, and Barbara was standing over here in front of me. She just started to back up toward me and looked at me and got close and elbowed me, and it pushed me back into the wall and the trash can. I was like, ‘What did [she] just do to me? This 140-year-old woman just tried to like tackle me.’”

Former ESPN host Sage Steele has accused legendary broadcaster Barbara Walters of assaulting her backstage at The View. During SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show on Thursday (August 17), Kelly asked Steele about the alleged physical run-in with Walters, who died last December at the age of 93. Steele says the incident happened after a segment about former President Barack Obama. “It was Barbara, Whoopi [Goldberg], and myself in the dark greenroom on the side,” Steele recalled. “I was probably four feet from the wall and the trash can, and Barbara was standing over here in front of me, and she just started to back up towards me and looked at me and got close and elbowed me, and it pushed me back into the wall and the trash can.” The former NBA Countdown host continued, “I was like, ‘What did [she] just do to me? This 140-year-old woman just tried to like tackle me.
