NBCUniversal is doubling down on Ego Nwodim.
The current SNL cast member has joined the cast of Peacock’s upcoming comedy series Mr. Throwback.
The single-camera mockumentary will follow a sports memorabilia dealer hoping to reunite with his former teammate from sixth grade, NBA star Steph Curry. Nwodim will take on the role of Kimberly, another childhood friend who is now Curry’s manager and business partner. Nwodim will star alongside Adam Pally and the real Steph Curry.
The show comes from David Caspe, the creator of Happy Endings. Six episodes were ordered, all to be directed by David Wain.
Her role on the show isn’t expected to interfere with her duties on SNL. Caspe has some experience working around the late-night sketch show’s schedule having previously created Kenan Thompson’s NBC sitcom Kenan.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim has been tapped as the female lead opposite Adam Pally and Stephen Curry in the single-camera Peacock comedy series Mr. Throwback. Her casting is not expected to impact her duties on the NBC sketch comedy series, which is in the same corporate family.
The Mr. Throwback mocumentary, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny (Happy Endings alum Pally), a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA great Steph Curry.
Nwodim will play Kimberly, Steph’s childhood friend, business partner, manager and essentially his overall handler. Kimberly, Steph, and Danny all grew up together, and while Kimberly is happy to see Danny pop back up in their lives, he’s not about to let Steph get taken advantage of by any of Danny’s schemes.

A few weeks ago, as The Sweet East started gracing theatres across the States, Reverse Shot ran a sprawling conversation between critic K. Austin Collins and critic-turned-screenwriter Nick Pinkerton. It’s a delightful exchange I can’t recommend enough, both for all it has to uncover about Sean Price Williams’ film––which Pinkerton wrote and which, in my book, was one of last year’s finest––but also for what it sponges of our depressingly shortsighted, quid-pro-quo relationship with the films we watch, what we expect to receive in return for the time we invest in them. “If I wanted to say something,” Pinkerton reflects on the okay-but-what’s-the-message response Sweet East routinely encountered in the months since its Cannes premiere, “I would open my mouth and the words would come out. That’s not what one makes a movie for. You make a movie to go beyond the expression of simple concepts.

A New Year is just around the corner, and Netflix’s upcoming roster of Original titles includes over 100 returning shows that will be back for new seasons. Some Netflix shows remain unclear on whether they’ll ever return, and in the case of the below, we suspect they’ve all been quietly canceled.
For these shows, we refer to them as ghost canceled. This means they’ve been effectively canceled behind the scenes but haven’t been publicly announced. These announcements are either because Netflix won’t confirm or nobody behind the show publicly announced the cancelation.
As always, cancelations are due to a number of reasons. With a few of these, it’ll be purely down to the length of time since the last season premiered, and then you’ve got the usual issues of performance.

Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

On August 27, 1993, Rob Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment continued its expansion into Stephen King’s works with Needful Things. Directed by Fraser C. Heston, the star-studded affair arrived only two years after King published the expansive novel. Screenwriter W.D. Richter took on the Herculean task of adapting the 700 page novel, and what came to fruition is a film as tonally curious as the source material: It’s funny, it’s unsettling, it’s violent, it’s perverse. Simply put, it’s the kind of movie we just don’t get anymore.
For that reason alone, Needful Things has aged quite well. Yet it’s also a great lookin’ film. Heston shoots the hell out of this picture, capitalizing on the crisp Fall foliage across British Columbia, doubling here for King’s fictional Castle Rock, Maine. Because of this, the film looks like a Stephen King novel reads, a key facet...

Let’s take a trip back to November 5, 2007.
“Crank Dat (Soulja Boy)” is the #1 song on the Billboard charts, Netflix’s DVD delivery service is approaching its peak, and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has just announced that 12,000 television and film screenwriters will go on strike after negotiations with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fell through. The 2007-08 writers’ strike ultimately lasted 100 days, ushering in sweeping changes in the media landscape.
Many of those changes took place online. One of the WGA’s major grievances concerned new media royalties. Writers sought steadier income from digital distribution of their work, and they ended up with a bigger piece of that pie once the strike was settled.
The then-new industry of online video presented a problem for traditional media screenwriters, but it also offered a solution. As the strike forced TV programs into extended reruns, showrunners went online...

Get in line, because Cocaine Bear has made its way to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital following a successful theatrical run. The “Maximum Rampage Edition” features several featurettes, including a fun audio commentary by director/producer Elizabeth Banks and producer (and Banks’ husband) Max Handelman.
Here are eight things I learned from the Cocaine Bear commentary…
1. The film opens with a Wet Hot American Summer reference.
Cocaine Bear opens to the tune of Jefferson Starship’s “Jane,” which many will recognize as the theme song to Wet Hot American Summer, the film in which Banks got her start. She explains:
“This song straight up is an homage to Wet Hot American Summer. Anybody who knows my work knows Wet Hot American Summer was technically my first movie as Elizabeth Banks. That’s my SAG card, got it on that movie. This is the opening song to Wet Hot American Summer, and I sent David Wain,...

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

The Second City comedy troupe got into the sketch comedy TV business one year after SNL. Their premise was that the Second City Television network would air different sketches. Comedy legends John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and more starred in the show’s five seasons.
Moranis and Thomas’s Strange Brew McKenzie brothers began here.

Wain has had himself quite the career with hit comedies including Role Models and Wanderlust, but he’s best known for Wet Hot American Summer. The film has gained a loyal following since it first came out in 2001, with Netflix taking notice and moving forward with the Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp limited series in 2015, with Wain directing all eight episodes and writing several. The streamer was so happy with the first series that it greenlighted Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later in 2017.
On top of that, he’s also been busy with the TV series Childrens Hospital as well Medical Police. Wain is currently developing several projects including one with Elizabeth Banks and another with Zoë Kravitz.
He is also repped by WME.

Mel Brooks is one of the few remaining living legends in pop culture to have survived so many generational shifts. He started as a comedy writer in the earliest days of television, helped shape and transform modern movie humor, and eventually ended up creating a sea change on Broadway as well with an adaptation of "The Producers," one of his first movies. And now, more than seven full decades after he started in TV, Brooks is back on the small screen, as glimpsed in the opening of the Hulu limited series "History of the World, Part II." But true to form, the Brooks we get a glimpse of is a joke in and of itself: it's a very "swole" Brooks (Aka a bodybuilder with a de-aged version of Brooks' face slapped in front of his own visage). It's a microcosm of this sketch series, as shameless and crass and incredibly funny as Brooks' own work.

David Wain's "Wet Hot American Summer" is the proper definition of a cult classic. When the film was released in 2001, it was both a critical and commercial flop, failing to make back a majority of its relatively cheap production budget. Despite the film's financial woes, the stars were aligned on this set for the film to become an eventual raunchy sleep-over classic.
One reason the film has endured through the years is that the casting director, Susie Farris, struck gold with this ensemble cast, which is mostly made up of some of comedy's then-up-and-comers who would become major stars down the line. Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Molly Shannon, and Elizabeth Banks, the list goes on. Then there was a young version of everyone's favorite goofball, Paul Rudd, fresh off of "Clueless," he turned in a delightfully sardonic performance as camp counselor Andy.

If you've never watched the 1981 Mel Brooks film "The History of the World, Part I," now is the time to do it. All these years later, a sequel series, "The History of the World, Part II," is hitting Hulu in March. Even if you haven't seen it, you've definitely heard people quote it, from the Torquemada musical number in The Spanish Inquisition segment to lines like, "It's good to be the king," and the "No, no, yes" song from Madeline Kahn. I feel pretty confident when I say that it's one of the funniest movies of all time, and I'm hardly alone in that sentiment.
"History of the World, Part I" is irreverent and absolutely stupid in the most wonderful way, and even after dozens of viewings, I still giggle to myself about parts of it whenever they cross my mind. Not only did Brooks write, direct, and star as Moses,...

It’s a common refrain: Mel Brooks, the comedy mastermind behind “The Producers” and “Space Balls,” could never make a Mel Brooks movie in today’s climate. Well, Mel Brooks made a Mel Brooks series, Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II,” in this very climate.
Nick Kroll, who is a main executive producer, star, and director on the upcoming eight-episode sequel to 1981’s “History of the World, Part I,” told TV critics that the times-have-changed notion is overblown. “I don’t think it’s as tricky to navigate doing comedy right now as people would like to imagine,” Kroll said at Saturday’s Television Critics Association winter press tour. “You just have to be funny.”
Fortunately for Kroll, he and Brooks are very funny. As are the dozens of other comedians and comedic actors who jumped at the chance to work with Brooks, their shared comedy hero. And...

The Master of Comedy, Mel Brooks, is back to take another swipe at some of history’s most iconic figures and events with History of the World, Part II. Over 40 years since Brooks’ original film made a mockery of Moses, introduced the first caveman critic, and turned the Spanish Inquisition into a song-and-dance routine, the legendary comedian is ready for another trip through the ages. Times certainly have changed, but Brooks’s knack for making fun of humankind’s victories and losses remains as sharp as ever. Hulu debuted a History of the World Part 2 teaser trailer on Friday, featuring a massive cast of comedy greats in the making.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After waiting over 40 years, there is finally a sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film, History of the World, Part I, with each episode featuring a variety of sketches that take us through different periods of human history.

Back in 1981, between “High Anxiety” and “Spaceballs,” Mel Brooks released “History of the World Part I,” a parody of epic films where at least part of the joke was that there was never going to be a Part II. But after 40 years, that’s no longer the case, as “History of the World Part II,” a limited series follow-up to the film is set to premiere on Hulu March 6. The streamer announced the news January 13, in addition to releasing a teaser for the sketch series.
Similar to the film, which consisted of five segments spanning the Stone Age to the French Revolution, each episode of “History of the World Part II” will consist of several sketches taking place at different periods throughout human history. Brooks stars in each episode alongside Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, and Ike Barinholtz, but each episode will also feature special guest stars from a stacked lineup...

After 40 years, the hopes and dreams of a generation have finally come true: “History of the World Pt. 2” is almost here. Hulu announced on Thursday that TV series — the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1982 Mel Brooks movie — will premiere March 6. And along with that announcement comes the official trailer. Watch that above now.
The 8-episode series launches with the first two episodes on March 6, with two episodes released nightly through March 9.
Like “History of the World Part 1,” the show features a series of irreverent sketches inspired by different historical eras and, if it’s anything like the original film, also parodying the historical epics of Hollywood’s golden age. And like its predecessor, “History of the World Part 2” takes aims at numerous literal and figurative sacred cows.

New York City during the 1970s was the hottest of messes. The metropolis was plagued by rising crime rates as white flight drove a chunk of the population to the suburbs. Unemployment soared. The two-day blackout of 1977 engulfed the city in darkness during a sweltering summer when David Burkowitz (aka the Son of Sam) was gunning down citizens at random. It was a terrifying time.
It was also a total blast. The disco era peaked at the celeb-stuffed Studio 54. The U.S. punk rock scene exploded at Cbgb. Reggie Jackson joined the Yankees for a tumultuous tenure that resulted in two World Series victories. The city seemed to be thriving and falling apart at the same time, and this condition was captured in the multitude of movies that were shot on location there throughout the decade. In films as different as "The French Connection," "Three Days of the Condor,...

Thanks to his affable charm, charismatic screen presence, and seeming agelessness, Paul Rudd has become one of Hollywood's most endearing performers. Though primarily known for his comedic roles, Rudd was classically trained at the beginning of his career, studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts-West and the British Drama Academy at Oxford University. This academic background perhaps lends an emotional truth to Rudd's numerous sarcastic and sardonic characters.
While many actors can play a funny jerk, it's hard to bring warmth and empathy to that same archetype, a specific chemistry Rudd has made his own. Rudd is also known for his frequent collaborations with writer/producer/director Judd Apatow and comedians Michael Ian Black, David Wain, and Michael Showalter. Outside of acting, Rudd is also a producer and writer who has managed to keep both feet in television and film throughout his career. A grounded performer who also loves a good prank,...

In a lot of ways, "Mad Men" unfolds as just one prolonged downward spiral for many of its central characters. And the epicenter of it all is undoubtedly prodigy adman Don Draper. For all his suave talents and enigmatic presence, the man also has more skeletons in the closet than a haunted house. Then there's his tendency to uproot and destroy lives — including his own — while trying to frantically run from said skeletons.
By the time you're introduced to him in season 1 of "Mad Men," it's not exactly a habit he's kicked either. Even as an intense fan of the show, Don's depressive episodes and reckless routines become a little wearisome at times. Like the casual racism and fierce misogyny, the show doesn't hesitate to remind you how flawed the people that occupy this world are. For Jon Hamm, navigating his character's worst bits took its own toll on him.

Comedians, actors and best friends Kate Berlant and John Early have been making beautifully weird comedy together for a little over a decade. On June 24, they bring their most ambitious sketch project yet to Peacock. Would It Kill You To Laugh? gives the duo a full hour to mine for awkward laughs while exploring some very surreal premises. The show also features a running bit in which the two play former sitcom stars who reunite after 30 years of not speaking for a very uncomfortable primetime interview special hosted by Meredith Vieira. The bit, it turns out, is inspired by a very real situation involving the stars of Three’s Company.

Bob's Burgers has graced our Televisions for Twelve Seasons on Fox and has finally reached the big screen.
The Bob's Burgers Feature film got hit with many covid delays in its production and release: but it was worth the wait!
The musical film featured all-new songs and the appearance of many beloved characters.
Bob's Burgers has done many musical episodes (including some two-parter musical episodes), and the movie brought the best aspects of those to the big screen.
By the end of the film, we thought they could have used another one or two musical numbers; but the ones we got were fantastic.
It's incredible what a bigger budget can do for production, and Bob's Burgers is no different.
The animation itself provided the most significant difference from the series.
The more streamlined effects and better shadowing made some of the best animations this year, especially with the musical numbers.

This review of “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” was first published May 23, 2022.
As a non-viewer of the long-running Fox animated comedy “Bob’s Burgers,” I couldn’t immediately quantify why I found “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” to be funny and charming while I was watching it, only to have it mostly whisp away from memory within a few days.
It wasn’t until I watched another TV-based feature film currently in theaters, “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” that I was reminded of the difference between fans and newbies for movies like these. The “Downton” sequel rewards devotees who remember the episode when they opened the Abbey for tourists, or the Dowager Countess’ near-fling with a Russian prince, and “Bob’s Burgers” no doubt does likewise for the fans who have tuned in for 12 seasons.
In this movie version, it’s a hectic week for the Belcher family, as the kids — Tina (voiced by...

This has been delayed for nearly two years after first being set to open in 2020, finally ready for its big screen debut. Based on the popular animated TV show that originally premiered in 2011. The Belcher family tries to save the restaurant from closing as a sinkhole forms in front of it, while the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family's restaurant. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, and Eugene Mirman, plus David Wain, Kevin Kline, and Zach Galifianakis. Both of the trailers for this are strange - they don't seem to show a lot of footage,...

A new Steven Soderbergh movie is on the horizon, but it’s being released a little under the radar. The filmmaker behind “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Magic Mike” and “Traffic” tackles the thriller genre with a story set during the Covid-19 pandemic in “Kimi,” which serves as a performance vehicle for Zoë Kravitz. The film marks the first collaboration between Soderbergh and “Panic Room” and “Spider-Man” writer David Koepp, and is already drawing notice for being a lean, mean thriller that compels from beginning to end.
