Jan S. Utstein is recognized as an internationally award-winning Independent Film Producer, Publisher, and Editor-in-Chief. Utstein's combined talents and experience in film/TV, theatre, animation, and comic book publishing offer a unique blend of credits that allow her to develop projects to integrate across all media from inception.
Utstein began her career in entertainment in Theatre as a Scenic Designer in New York. When UCLA offered her a full Master's degree scholarship she moved to Los Angeles and subsequently joined the film community. She began her film career as the Assistant Art Director on Stan Winston's cult classic film Pumpkinhead.
In the years since she has moved into Producing, Production, and Publishing.
As a Producer, she has developed both film and TV series with Madonna's Maverick Entertainment, The Jim Henson Company, and The Pitt Group owned by the legendary Lou Pitt. Her producing credits include the Internet TV series Payday, directed by Demian Lichtenstein (3000 Miles to Graceland) and based on the sold-out hit video game "Payday 2" for SONY PlayStation, X-Box, and Steam; 35 Days of Kevin Eastman a documentary on the co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; the multi-award-winning Cinemascope feature film Valhalla, a San Sebastian Int'l Film Festival - Opera Prima Selectee; Haven winner of two Dramalogue Awards; and as a partner in 88 Tranzmedia - Agent 88, which garnered worldwide press, including the front page of the LA Times.
Utstein spent 7 years at Marvel Studios with Production Accounting credits on all productions including - Film: Avengers Infinity War & Endgame, Black Panther 1&2, Shang-Chi, Black Widow, Thor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man & the Wasp, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II&III, Doctor Strange 1&2 - TV: Wanda Vision, Loki, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, Werewolf at Night and Animation: What If...?, I am Groot. Her other studio credits include Warner Bros.' Demolition Man, Columbia Picture's Green Hornet, and DreamWorks Studios' Cowboys & Aliens, Fright Night, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, and The Light Between Oceans. Utstein also did an in-house stint in DreamWorks' Production Finance department.
As CEO/Editor-in-chief of Hurricane Entertainment, she has published numerous comic book series and graphic novels through Image Comics, IDW Publishing, and CrossGen Entertainment. Her books boast impressive sales worldwide, most notably, the multi-award nominated (Eisner, Wizard Fan, Harvey Award) graphic novel Violent Messiahs. At Hurricane she has partnered with many entertainment luminaries, such as 4-time Academy Award winner, Star Wars' Sound Designer/Editor/Director Ben Burtt on her flying racecar title Chassis; and Kurt Russell, the late Debra Hill, and John Carpenter on the title John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles based on the film Escape From New York.
Before the creation of Hurricane Ent. Utstein was involved in the Video Game industry. As a partner at Coulter Studios, she co-managed their 3D animation house which specialized in designing video game characters. The client list included Disney Interactive, Virgin Interactive, Showtime, TNT, Universal Pictures, MGM Studios, and Touchstone Pictures.
Utstein is dedicated to producing genre-driven properties for the Film, TV, and Video Game markets.
