Lee Gabler, the powerful Hollywood agent who orchestrated landmark television deals during a four-decade career that included 25 years as a stalwart at CAA and a long relationship with David Letterman, has died. He was 84.
Gabler died Monday in Los Angeles from a brain injury, his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth Gabler, president of 3000 Pictures at Sony Pictures Entertainment, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Gabler, who started out at the Ashley Steiner Famous Artists agency in New York before coming to prominence at ICM, negotiated agreements for some of the most popular shows in TV history.
They included The West Wing, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, ER, Mad Men, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Amazing Race, Moonlighting, American Idol, House, Beverly Hills, 90210, Northern Exposure, 24, Sex and the City, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Melrose Place, The White Shadow, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Band of Brothers, Tales From the Crypt and Alf.

A “Blossom” reboot is well past the ideas stage. Mayim Bialik, who starred in the titular role of the 1990s sitcom, tells me series creator Don Reo has written a pilot for its return. “The show was supposed to be ‘Catcher in the Rye’ about a girl, which was unusual. And we’d like to do a reboot that’s unusual. We’d like to do a single cam,” Bialik says. “All of the cast is on board.”
However, it sounds like it’ll take more time to get things going than they were hoping. “It’s a set of conversations with Disney because there’s a lot of red tape and there’s a lot of complexity,” Bialik explains. “It’s complicated.”
Bialik revealed in an Instagram post this month that the reboot is in the works after talking about it during an appearance she and Reo made at Rhode Island’s Bryant University.

Bring up Golden Age Hollywood filmmaker Busby Berkeley, and most people conjure his staging of elaborate, kaleidoscopic dance numbers in such films as “Dames” and “Footlight Parade,” Ginger Rogers singing “We’re in the Money” at the height of the Depression in “Gold Diggers of 1933,” or his sinuous camera weaving through dancer’s legs in such hits as Oscar-nominated “42nd Street” (1933).
A three-time Oscar nominee (for Best Dance Direction), Berkeley’s musicals were credited with saving Warner Bros. from financial collapse before he became a key player in Arthur Freed’s unit at MGM, where he propelled the careers of numerous stars, including Rogers, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Gene Kelly. Behind the scenes, Berkeley’s life was darker and often tragic — beset by scandal and numerous brushes with the law.
Arguably, Berkeley’s Hollywood artist’s journey is the untold story that “Babylon” wasn’t — and it coincides...

This past year, we've had a lot of discussions about whether Brendan Fraser should have been cast in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" due to him requiring a fat suit to play the role. On the one hand, we are all happy to see Fraser be given a lead role by a major director, which hasn't happened in many years. On the other, it is yet another entry on the long list of roles that should presumably have gone to fat actors but didn't. The likelihood that a central character is explicitly written to be large is already incredibly small, but if all those parts are getting taken by actors who need padding and prosthetics to make themselves appear large, when else are fat actors going to be given opportunities to lead films?
As someone who is indeed fat, I often find myself frustrated by this, but I also understand...

Working With Alfred Hitchcock On The Wrong Man Wasn't The Surefire Win Henry Fonda Hoped It Might Be
You know the basics of an Alfred Hitchcock film. Long suspense scenes, twisty murder plots, and blondes. Hitchcock's films were so stylized that his 1956 picture "The Wrong Man" feels anomalous because it's comparitively down to earth. Why the break from convention? It was based on the true story of Manny Balestrero, a New York musician who in 1953 was wrongly accused of armed robbery.
Balestrero, unfortunately, resembled the true culprit, who had previously held up an insurance company's front desk. When Balestrero went to borrow money from said company, clerks mistook him for the robber and he was arrested. Balestrero endured a trial before the right man was caught and the stress threw his wife Rose into a depression. These events are depicted with journalistic detail in "The Wrong Man."
It makes sense that Hitchcock was drawn to the story. Many of his films, including "The Man Who Knew Too Much,...

As Hollywood origin stories go, it doesn’t get more inspirational than the philanthropic spark that led Danny Thomas to launch St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It’s a tale that has been well told, but it bears repeating at this time of year.
In the late 1950s and early ’60s, Thomas led the charge among Hollywood stars and in Arab American immigrant communities across the country to raise millions of dollars to build a hospital guided by the principle that no child would be turned away because of race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
Today, St. Jude endures out of its home base in Memphis, Tenn., with a multi-billion dollar operating budget to provide life-saving care for children with catastrophic illnesses and conduct medical research into terminal illnesses. Simply put, St. Jude has become “America’s hospital,” in the words of Tony Thomas, producer of...

"The Golden Girls" aired its pilot episode in the fall of 1985 and raked in 44 million viewers. An instant classic, the sitcom followed the lives of four older women — Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) — and how they cope with aging, dating, and living together. With a sharp comedic sensibility, the show ran seven seasons and frequently addressed major social issues, including racism, body image, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Betty White had a mischievous side, and she loved to have fun and crack jokes on the set of “The Golden Girls.” But there were times when she was all business.
Those times were often on Monday mornings. In the early years of the NBC comedy, White, the legendary performer who died this week at the age of 99, would often sit with “Golden Girls” executive producer Tony Thomas and dig into the overnight ratings for the hit sitcom that aired in Saturday time slots for the entirety of its 1985-1992 run.
“When I think of Betty, I think of fun,” Thomas told Variety. “She liked to have a good time at work. We laughed a lot. She was just the best.”

In September of 1996, a reporter asked Tony Thomas, the musical director at Seattle’s Kmps Radio, what he thought about LeAnn Rimes’ Blue. Released 25 years ago this month, the title track had become one of the biggest selling singles in the past decade, and in a few short months Rimes, then 13, had gone from local Texas singing sensation to the CMA Awards and, soon after, the youngest solo artist to win a Grammy and the first country one to win Best New Artist.

Rudy Behlmer, author of “Memo From David O. Selznick” and nearly a dozen other film-history books, died Friday at his home in Studio City, Calif. He was 92.
Behlmer was among the most widely respected historians of Golden Age Hollywood, in part because of his insistence upon researching “primary source material” and not relying on faulty memories or exaggerated press accounts of the time.
“Memo From David O. Selznick,” which Behlmer edited from thousands of Selznick’s private letters, telegrams and memoranda, was a best seller in 1972. Behlmer first interviewed the “Gone With the Wind” producer for a 1963 article for “Films in Review,” one of dozens of magazine pieces he wrote over the decades.
Other books followed: “Hollywood’s Hollywood: The Movies About the Movies”, “Inside Warner Bros. 1935-1951” (1985), “Behind the Scenes: The Making Of…” (1989) and “Memo from Darryl F. Zanuck” (1993).

Two years ago, Alexander Skarsgard took home his first Emmy Award when he claimed Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor for “Big Little Lies.” Now his dad Stellan Skarsgard can keep it all in the family by winning the same category for “Chernobyl.”
The elder Skarsgard received his first Emmy nomination Tuesday, which might come as a surprise to some since he’s such a prolific veteran actor. His nomination for his performance as Boris Shcherbina is one of 19 bids for “Chernobyl,” which leads the limited series/TV movie field.
Numerous parents and children have won Emmys before — Carl and Rob Reiner, Christopher and Amanda Plummer, Lucille Ball and Lucie Arnaz, James and Tyne Daly, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, and Danny, Marlo and Tony Thomas, to name a few — but they’ve all followed the same pattern: The parent won first, then the offspring. That, obviously, makes sense.

Could Miguel Ferrer become a posthumous Emmy nominee for “Twin Peaks: The Return”? The veteran character actor died of throat cancer in January 2017 after he shot the Showtime revival, in which he reprised his role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield. The TV academy often rewards stars who have died with nominations for their final performances, so could Ferrer compete for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor? Despite a long list of TV credits including “The Stand” (1994), “Crossing Jordan” (2001-2007), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2012-2017) and many more, he never earned an Emmy nomination during his lifetime.
Ferrer first appeared in the original “Twin Peaks” in a recurring role as an abrasive and sarcastic FBI forensics specialist assisting Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in his murder investigation in the title town. And he also appeared in the 1992 prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.” The 18-episode limited run in 2017 found him...

Fox News accused The New York Times on Monday of “hyperventilating to the media” after the paper asked the news network for an apology over what the paper deemed a “malicious and inaccurate segment.” A recent “Fox & Friends” report argued that an Isis leader got away because the Times had leaked key information. Gen. Tony Thomas has told reporters that a Times story in 2015 about using certain data to track Isis fighters resulted in U.S. forces losing the trail to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. President Trump kicked off his Saturday with another online assault on major media, this time the “failing” New York Times and “Amazon Washington Post.” Citing no evidence, he alleged that the Times “foiled U.S. attempt to kill the single most wanted terrorist, Al-Baghdadi.” Trump added, “Their sick agenda over National Security.” The president seems to have been referring to statements by U.S. Gen. Tony Thomas in a Friday interview with Fox News’ Catherine Herridge at the Aspen Security Forum. Thomas said his special-operations team was “particularly close” to Isis caliph Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi after a 2015 raid that killed Isis oil.

Mary-Louise Parker‘s reunion with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt is now official as the former Weeds star has closed a deal to topline NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Feed Me. The project, from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas, received a pilot green light last month based on Parker’s intention to star in it. Following the end of Weeds, which Greenblatt put on the air while running Showtime, NBC had been pursing the actress for multiple projects, and Feed Me was the script she responded to. Talks with Parker had already commenced when Feed Me was picked up to pilot three weeks ago, now they have been successfully completed. Written by Sally Robinson, who penned Lifetime’s successful Steel Magnolias remake, Feed Me is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together.

Updated: NBC has given a late pilot order to Feed Me, a single-camera comedy from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas’ Witt/Thomas Prods (Blossom, Beauty And The Beast and its CW reboot, The Practice). NBC had been pursuing former Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker for multiple pilots. This is the script she responded to, helping it get a green light while the actress’ deal is being worked out. Feed Me would reunite Parker with NBC topper Bob Greenblatt who cast her in another dark comedy, Weeds, while at Showtime. In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at the year in radio.
2012 begins with 2DayFM shock jock Kyle Sandilands in a continuing sponsorship shit-storm. Jenny Craig is the first to sponsor the Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show after advertisers withdrew from the program in late 2011 following Sandilands’ vitriolic on-air rant at a News.com.au journalist that included calling her a ‘fat slag’. The public response to the weight loss brand’s decision to advertise sees them cancel their ads 24 hours later.

Claire Hooper and Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross start their new partnership on Sydney’s Mix106.5 breakfast show as Jane Hall joins Chrissie Swan on Melbourne’s Mix101.1 breakfast show.

It’ll be like homecoming week for Smallville‘s Lana when Beauty and the Beast star Kristin Kreuk starts working again with Smallville’s former co-showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders, who have now taken the same job with The CW‘s freshman show, an updated and reworked version of the 1980s Beauty and the Beast series.
THR broke the news, reporting that Peterson and Souders will be joining current showrunners/executive producers/writers Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (Brothers & Sisters) as showrunners, which one has to think will be an interesting situation; four showrunners? Peterson and Souders most recently worked as consulting producers on yet another CW show, the one-season-only The Secret Circle.

Dmg Radio has called in Ted Horton to lead the marketing of its new radio network smoothfm.
Group marketing director Tony Thomas told Mumbrella the decision came on the back of working with Horton during his stint at the Coles marketing team. Thomas and Horton – boss of agency Big Red – worked together on the Curtis Stone-fronted Feed Your Family for $10 promotion.
Thomas was head of advertising and media at Coles in a contract role during 2010. As well as Coles, Horton also handles advertising for Jetstar, some of Target and Westpac.
The launch of the easy listening format in Sydney and Melbourne was revealed last week. It replaces the short lived Classic Rock, which in turn replaced Vega.
Speaking in a video interview with Mumbrella editor Tim Burrowes, Thomas said: “I’ve had a good relationship with Ted over the years, I worked with him at Coles.
“I absolutely admire and respect the guy.

Dmg Radio Australia has today confirmed another rebrand of its second stations in Sydney and Melbourne as smoothfm, which will follow an easy listening “more music and less talk” format. The radio company believes it has identified a significant gap in the market for the format.
The move is another radical change of direction for the stations, which were branded as Vega Radio until March 2010.
The final set of radio ratings for the two Vega stations saw an audience share of 3.4% in Sydney and 3.7% in Melbourne.
The two stations then unsuccessfully relaunched as Classic Rock in an attempt to take on Austereo’s Triple M. However, audience share failed to improve significantly, hovering around 3.6% in both markets.
A year ago, Dmg quietly dropped the Classic Rock brand and moved to the more neutral Sydney’s 95.3 FM and Melbourne’s 91.5Fm, along with the positioning “Classic songs. Classic rock.”
In the most recent set of ratings,...
