- Nicolas attended Juilliard, paid for with the G.I. Bill after he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam.

- Became a father for the 1st time at age 45 when his wife Marguerite Surovy gave birth to their daughter Marisa Z. Surovy on October 7, 1989.
- He met his wife, Marguerite Surovy, at a newsstand, when he was first playing "Mike Roy" on All My Children (1970) and she was a switchboard receptionist for Penthouse magazine. They and their daughter, Marisa Surovy (born in 1990), now live in California.
- In 1984 he performed in "You Can't Take It With You" on Broadway, with Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst, while playing Mike Roy on ABC's daytime serial All My Children (1970), a role to which he returned in March of 1998 for six months.
- He was nominated for a 1978 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role in a play, "Much Ado About Nothing", at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
