Shrek has now been a part of pop culture for more than 20 years, which is a wild thought for any millennial who remembers when the Mike Myers-voiced swamp-dweller first arrived on the big screen in 2001. Though he'd previously been the focus of William Steig's 1990 picture book "Shrek!," it wasn't until the first movie debuted that the character became fully embraced by the mainstream. Since then, Hollywood has done its thing and produced a stultifying amount of "Shrek" sequels and spin-offs, to the point you'll probably need a refresher on the correct order to watch the Shrek movies before delving in. But if you wanted to just stick with the perennially charming original, we wouldn't blame you. Luckily enough, that very movie can now be found on the biggest streamer in the game.

The Shrek movies are some of the most popular films ever made. The first movie in the series was released in 2001 and quickly became a smash hit.
The movie follows the story of Shrek, a grumpy ogre who lives in a swamp. One day, Shrek sets out on a journey to find the beautiful Princess Fiona, who a dragon has kidnaped. Along the way, he meets a friendly donkey named Donkey, and the two become fast friends together; they rescue Princess Fiona and defeat the dragon.
The movie was successful and spawned three sequels, released in 2004, 2010, and 2013 and two spin-off movies released in 2011, and the last one is yet to be released in 2022.
The Shrek movies have grossed over 3 billion dollars worldwide and are loved by kids and adults alike. Thanks to their lovable characters and hilarious stories, the Shrek movies are some of the greatest animated films ever made.

Vicky Jenson's and Andrew Adamson's 2001 film "Shrek," loosely based on a twisted children's book by William Steig, was released as a direct criticism of the fairy tale tropes and clichés popularized by Disney-produced animated films like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Beauty and the Beast." While ultimately friendly and huggable, the title character was presented as gross and off-putting; he loves mud and filth, lives in a bog, picks his nose, farts. He is a literal ogre. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) would ultimately find himself on his own hero's journey to rescue a princess (Cameron Diaz) on the back...

The 74th Academy Awards, which honored films from 2001, was historic in many ways. Whoopi Goldberg would host the ceremony on March 24, 2002, for her fourth time. Denzel Washington became just the second black actor to win a lead trophy. It was for his villainous cop in “Training Day” — 8 years after Sidney Poitier became the first for his handyman in 1963’s “Lilies of the Field.” Halle Berry also broke down a barrier by becoming the first-ever black actress to win an Oscar as a lead, portraying a single mother in “Monster’s Ball.”
It was also the debut of the Best Animated Feature category. As Goldberg explained on air, “In recognition to their steadily growing importance to the motion picture arts, the academy has added a category honoring animated feature films. Bambi, who is now in an assisted living facility in Palm Springs, has been lobbying for this for years. I proudly...

Universal and Illumination founder and CEO, Chris Meledandri are taking a nostalgic walk down memory with a plan to give ‘Shrek’ and the ‘Puss in Boots’ spin-off a minor reboot.
Whilst the aim is to reboot the franchise to appeal to a whole new generation, Meledandri hopes to bring back some of the original voice cast. It was the cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas that made the green ogre and friends so palatable.
In hoping to bring the band back together, Meledandri told Variety
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” explains Meledandri. “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply...

The Shrek franchise is returning, with reboot efforts planned for not only the green ogre, but Puss in Boots.
Shrek has been in a bit of a slumber for the better part of a decade, hard as it might be to believe. The ultra-successful animated film franchise, which later became the platform for a multimedia pop culture blitz, notably spawning spinoff Puss in Boots, last focused on its main character in the fourth film, 2010’s Shrek Forever After. Yet, an untitled Shrek 5 was planned as recently as last year, until it wasn’t – and now we know why. A franchise reboot is nigh!
Both Shrek and Puss in Boots are getting reboot treatments, reports Variety. Universal Pictures – whose parent company, Comcast, purchased the franchise’s original studio, DreamWorks, for 3.8 billion back in June of 2016 – has spearheaded this reboot push. The task of overseeing the efforts fall...

On the surface, it sounds like one of those true-life, triumph-over-adversity tearjerkers that Hollywood spoon-feeds folks with numbing frequency. But thankfully, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot approaches the cliff of sentiment without going over the edge. Based on the 1989 memoir by Portland, Oregon cartoonist John Callahan, the film traces what happens when this party-hard, skirt-chasing boozehound is rendered a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic by an alcohol-fueled car accident. His journey from wallowing in despair to becoming a successful satirical cartoonist makes the usual stops at physical therapy sessions and work-the-program meetings,...

All the way back in 2001, DreamWorks Animation hit a perfect home run with Shrek. The loose adaptation of William Steig’s picture book of the same name caught the imagination of a generation of children and adults alike, and spawned a multi-billion dollar, multimedia franchise spanning 16 years and counting. The Shrek universe now comprises of four feature films, one spinoff film, six short films, two television specials, one television series, one stage musical, 12 video games, and a range of themed attractions around the world. Now, after a number of years of teasing, we finally have a solid update on the status of Shrek 5.
The screenwriter of the movie, Michael McCullers (Saturday Night Live), was recently talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his current release, The Boss Baby. During that conversation, he explained that his script for Shrek 5 is complete, and the film is in development following some corporate-level re-shuffling.

The Croods is the latest feature from DreamWorks Animation. But what does the future hold for the studio? Mark takes a look...
Arch your left eyebrow, for a moment. Good. Now, tilt your head to the side. I'll leave the smile up to you, but you must either smirk or give a big cheesy grin. You're now on your way to looking a lot like the DreamWorks Face, the expression that used to appear in pretty much every DreamWorks Animation film, usually on a talking animal of some description.
The thing is, in the past, all of DreamWorks' movies were comedies. It's since the studio has branched out into other genres, while retaining their sense of humour, that we've started sitting up and taking notice again.
For a while there, it looked like DreamWorks Animation had turned into the very corporate machine that it set out to lampoon: Disney.

Scholastic continues its enjoyable line of children’s tales with this entry into the Storybook Line. Similar to its predecessors, celebrities lend their most pitch-perfect, optimistic voices to each story. This particular collection features the current Hollywood quirky girl Zooey Deschanel and a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania who defined an era of makeup and leather, the unsurpassed Tim Curry.
With this foray into educational videos, Scholastic tackles stories about “following your dreams.” Young audiences are bound to find inspiration in the five selected pieces, from William Steig’s inconsistent but still effective Brave Irene to Shana Corey’s delightful Players in Pigtails. The former follows the dramatic, even harrowing journey of a girl braving a snowstorm to make a special delivery to the duchess for her sick dressmaking mother. The latter centers on the punchy Katie Casey, who wants to play baseball in 1942. Unfortunately, it just isn’t allowed...

Here at Tmp I’ve had a couple articles dealing with books and movie adaptations. Inevitably one of the comments I always get on these articles say something to the effect of “I didn’t even know that was based off a book!” Sometimes those adaptations can sneak up on you and unless you really watch the credits you would never know. So I’ve compiled a list of movies you most likely didn’t know were based off of books.
And just because, I’ve thrown in a couple that are actually based off of comic books.
The Neverending Story
This classic children’s story is still one of my favorite movies. While the effects are now dated, the fantasy film remains a timeless story that just about anyone can relate to. It started life as a German fantasy novel by Michael Ende and helped spawn the first two...

Amanda Holden got to leave the Britain’s Got Talent judging table for a few minutes tonight, as she and the cast of Shrek performed on the huge stage during the results show.
We were kind of shocked by the performance, having previously insisted that the actress had no real talent of her own we had to eat our words as she sang I’m A Believer and was actually quite tuneful.
In fact, we would go as far as to suggest she was probably more in key than Cheryl Cole during her last X Factor performance, though in fairness she didn’t have the energetic dance routine to contend with.
After the performance, Simon Cowell addressed the performers and grudgingly praised his fellow judge saying:
Can I start with the one on the right, you were actually a better singer than your wife.

It looks like John Stevenson will not be working with DreamWorks again for a long time, if at all. Today Stevenson announced the upcoming projects that he is working on with Vanguard Films.
John Stevenson has signed a producing/directing pact with Vanguard Films, and has begun work on directing Alien Rock Band for Vanguard. Rock Band is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a garage band from Earth that journeys across the Universe for a chance to quality for the Intergalactic Battle of the Bands.
Vanguard Films has directed such duds as Valiant, Happily N’Ever After, Space Chimps and Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Hopefully bringing the likes of Stevenson on board to produce and direct will be a step into financial and critical success.
A new strategy has been put into place to prepare for the upcoming films according to a press release.

John Williams' Vanguard Films has inked an overall producing and directing deal with John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) and formed a financing and distribution alliance with former president of Lakeshore International Peter Rogers' new company Moviemill. Up first for Stevenson is CGI/live-action hybrid Alien Rock Band, about a garage band in outerspace competing at an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. Next is CG-animated Rotten Island, from Shrek author William Steig's book about an island where monsters reign until a flower changes everything. (People magazine writes: "Not since Maurice Sendak’s 'Where the Wild Things Are' has there been such a glorious nightmare of a book.”) Among the producing projects for Stevenson and Williams: animated film Buzby and live-action martial-arts adventure City of Dragons and fantasy adventure ...

Shrek the Musical
My guess is that, unless the difficult economic times intervene, Shrek the Musical, the new Broadway production based on the hit animated film, which in itself came from the story and characters from a book by William Steig, will please a lot of people. While Shrek the Musical may not be the type of show that appeals completely to me, it still has its moments. In fact, if the entire musical were as good as its best scenes, Shrek would be a real winner. It is still better than many of the Broadway musicals adapted from hit animated movies, but it is uneven in spots, and the score never quite elevates it as much as might be hoped for.

Just as the big green ogre is about to storm into theaters with Shrek the Third, Mike Mitchell is in negotiations to direct Shrek 4 for DreamWorks Animation.
Penned by Tim Sullivan, the fourth installment will chronicle the continuing adventures of Shrek and his buddies, which is based on the children's book "Shrek!" written by William Steig and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Josh Klausner recently penned a rewrite.
DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bill Damaschke, Kristine Belson and Chris Kuser are overseeing for the studio. Producing credits are being worked out.
The Shrek series is a massive moneymaker for DWA. The first movie grossed $484.4 million worldwide, while the second one raked in $920.7 million.
Mitchell, whose helming credits include Sky High and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, isn't a stranger to the world of animation. He directed a SpongeBob SquarePants episode this year. He also helmed the award-winning short Herd. He is repped by CAA and attorney Ken Richman.
Klausner, a second-unit director for many Farrelly flicks who turned to writing, is repped by WMA.

HarperCollins Children's Books, one of the leading publishers of books for young readers with such titles as Charlotte's Web and the Lemony Snicket books, has pacted with the Gotham Group, founded by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, for representation for film, television, video and allied rights. With the agreement, Gotham, which already reps Simon & Schuster's children and young adult libraries and such authors and illustrators as Tony Diterlizzi and Maurice Sendak, increases its dominance in the area of repping literary rights to kid lit that is looking to make the transition to the screen. HarperCollins publishes about 500 children's books annually, and though it doesn't retain the rights to all of them, its library numbers in the thousands. Some of the authors who will be represented include William Steig (Shrek), Katherine Paterson, Beverly Cleary, Margaret Wise Brown, Jack Prelutsky, Sarah Weeks and Aliki.
A decade after bringing William Steig's book Shrek to DreamWorks, producer John H. Williams has optioned a second title from the children's author. The Vanguard Animation founder has optioned exclusive rights to The Zajaba Jungle from the late cartoonist's estate. Jungle has as its main character a young boy who must leave the safety of his own back yard to trek through a dense, fantastical jungle to find his captured parents.
