Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ story may be getting a big update soon as NCIS keeps expanding its universe with yet another spinoff, but the character has been out of the original show for quite some time already.
Gibbs said a definite goodbye to his team back in season 19 when he decided it was time for a long-awaited retirement in Alaska while his position was eventually taken over by former FBI agent Alden Parker.
Though the latter has been there for several seasons in a row with no real criticism from the show’s lovers, some fans still seem to question Gibbs’ decision to pass on his torch to Parker while there was another excellent candidate for such a role.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS Season 21 Episode 7 “A Thousand Yards.”] For a milestone as major as the franchise’s 1,000th episode, NCIS pulls out all the stops, from guest stars (LA‘s Daniela Ruah as Kensi! Hawai’i‘s Vanessa Lachey as Jane! Joe Spano as Fornell!) to Easter eggs (like connections in the case to dead characters like Tom Morrow and Kate Todd and it all linking back to the mothership’s very first investigation). It also starts off by putting one of the agency’s own in the hospital. While visiting his late wife’s grave and then having an awkward, tense conversation with his son, Jared (Spence Moore II), Director Vance (Rocky Carroll) is shot by a sniper. While Carroll, speaking with TV Insider for our weekly aftershow, NCIS: Case Closed, never worried about being killed off, he does recall of the initial conversation he had with the episode’s writer,...

It was only appropriate that the 1,000th episode of the NCISverse aired on the Mother Ship.
While NCIS Season 21 Episode 7 didn't live up to all the hype (what could have?), it was still enjoyable and well-constructed.
It also skillfully drew upon NCIS's long history, going back 21 seasons.
The spotlight fell on Rocky Carroll's Director Vance, who has been too close to becoming a recurring character in recent seasons.
The storyline hearkened back to one of Vance's shining emotional moments when his wife Jackie was killed during an assassination attempt on Eli David on NCIS Season 10 Episode 11.
As expected, that event had lasting repercussions on the Vance family.
Kayla followed her father's lead and became an NCIS agent afloat.
Jared, who was closer to Jackie, had been adrift since then, never committing to anything in Leon's mind.
For his part, Jared didn't understand how Leon could stay with a...

CBS NCIS on Monday night delivered the franchise’s 1,000th total episode, including any and all spinoffs. What Easter eggs did writer Christopher J. Waild scatter throughout the hour, for longtime fans to find?
The milestone episode, “A Thousand Yards,” took its wink-wink title from Kasie’s finding that the sniper who shot Vance at his late wife’s grave site in the cold open was that far a distance away.

The 1,000th episode from the NCIS Universe has officially been filmed.
Those numbers include episodes from the original NCIS and the various spin-offs.
“Reaching 1,000 episodes for the franchise was insane, and, by the way, I’m pointing out that almost 500 of those are just us,” NCIS star Sean Murray said.
Murray has been featured as Agent Timothy McGee since the first season. And his character is still going strong in NCIS Season 21.
“It’s unreal. We had a lot of people asking what it was like, and I kept kind of shaking my head because it’s really unfathomable,” Murray added to TV Insider.
Murray also teased NCIS set photos featuring Joe Spano. That’s the actor who has played Tobias Fornell for years. Fornell usually appears in a Gibbs-centric episode, but Mark Harmon retired his character to Alaska.

NCIS Season 21 is still filming upcoming episodes, with the season finale slated to air this spring.
Despite this being a shortened season due to the Hollywood strikes, NCIS is about to have a monumental event.
NCIS will soon debut the 1,000th episode of an NCIS program (counting all its spin-offs). This is a big deal for the franchise.
That big episode is reportedly slated to arrive on Monday, April 15, with plenty of fanfare from CBS expected.
To take a franchise to 1000 episodes and beyond is extremely impressive, and there are no signs of the NCIS Universe slowing down.
It was recently revealed that Anthony Dinozzo and Ziva David are getting an NCIS spin-off. The stars (Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo) will be filming soon.
Sean Murray shares some NCIS spoilers from the set

Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. Bill lives a solitary life on his compound when the epidemic breaks out. But his uneasy quiet is disturbed when Murray Bartlett‘s Frank stumbles upon the land. Bill is reluctant to help the...

Murray Bartlett is having a very special moment. After winning his first Emmy last year, the actor has followed up that victory with not one but two nominations this year as he looks to continue his hot streak. One of those bids this year is for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales,” while his second comes for HBO’s drama “The Last of Us,” which amassed a whopping 25 Emmy bids. Specifically, Bartlett was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for his emotional role as Frank in episode three of the show.
That episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” was touted as one of the very best in the entire series and was certainly the most heartbreaking. The episode flashes back to Frank leaving Baltimore as the epidemic spread. Soon after, he stumbles across a protected compound belonging to Nick Offerman‘s Bill, who, at first, is reluctant...

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1983.
Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the NCIS Season 20 premiere “A Family Matter” and the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 2 premiere “Prisoners’ Dilemma.”] NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i kick off their seasons with a crossover that sees both teams working together to take down the Raven, the Big Bad who nearly killed Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) and framed Parker (Gary Cole) for murder. In 2000, “The Practice” became the first drama series to receive five guest acting Emmy nominations in a single year. That record, which was matched by “House of Cards” in 2016, has now been shattered by “Succession.” Of the HBO show’s seven 2022 guest bids, an unprecedented four are in the male category. Included in this quartet of contenders is Alexander Skarsgård, who is back in the fold five years after taking home his first Emmy for his supporting performance on the limited series “Big Little Lies.”
Skarsgård earned this Best Drama Guest Actor nomination for his work in the third season finale of “Succession,” entitled “All the Bells Say.” His character, Lukas Matsson, was introduced two episodes earlier as a Swedish businessman considering selling his streaming platform, GoJo, to Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the founder and CEO of media conglomerate Waystar Royco. That was a strange, but still largely satisfying, season opener.
NCIS Season 18 Episode 1 managed to fill in a narrative hole from NCIS Season 17 while also serving as a follow-up, all set in the past. That's probably why it had a sort of patchwork feel to it.
The most enjoyable part, as often happens when Joe Spano visits, was the emotional interplay between Gibbs and Fornell.
Their impromptu reunion hearkened back to a pair of episodes, NCIS Season 16 Episode 24, when Emily Fornell was hospitalized after overdosing on synthetic opioids, and NCIS Season 17 Episode 8, when Gibbs made a mysterious exit for a couple of weeks.
Gibbs, who tried to sell that he was going sturgeon fishing, was actually helping out Fornell, who was still pursuing the leader of the ring responsible for the drugs that nearly killed Emily.
Other than Jack, who just asked what he was up to, the rest...

CBS’ NCIS opens Season 18 — and inches closer to Episode 400 — this Tuesday at 8/7c, with a narrative twist that will transport us and Gibbs one year into the past.
In the season premiere, which pretty quickly flashes back to this time last year (and stays there), Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) and Fornell (returning guest star Joe Spano) attempt to track down the leader of a ring who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter, nearly killing her in the Season 16 finale. Meanwhile, the team back home deals with the case of a missing cadaver.

We are just weeks away from the premiere of NCIS Season 18 (November 17), and some new details have spilled out about the season premiere.
NCIS Season 18 Episode 1 is titled "Sturgeon Season," and will feature the return of Fornell.
"Gibbs and Fornell (Joe Spano) attempt to track down the leader of a drug ring who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter," reads the CBS description of the episode.
"Also, the team deals with the case of a missing cadaver from the NCIS autopsy room."
Spano previously confirmed his return via social media, but it's always good to get confirmation from the network.
If you watch NCIS online, you know that Gibbs was supposedly off on a fishing trip in a plot that confused fans on NCIS Season 17.
And fans will be getting some resolution during the coming season.

Is this a thrilling, Chinatown-like Hollywood mystery, or a semi-docu about the making of the first TV Superman show? Or is it going to shed light on the mysterious death of actor George Reeves, the childhood hero we couldn’t believe had died by his own hand? Allen Coulter’s well-crafted show has a lot to say and says it well with an excellent cast… yet it needed something it doesn’t deliver. If you don’t require your movieland mysteries tied up in a neat bow, this could fit the bill.

After fourteen and a half seasons, it's actually surprising that they hadn't already used the famous "Keep Your Friends Close" phrase as an episode title. Welcome to NCIS Season 15 Episode 14!
This story answered lingering questions about the fate of long-standing favorite recurring character Tobias Fornell after Gibbs's testimony during the Gabriel Hicks case.
In a surprising subversion of probably all expectations, Fornell actually landed on his feet, starting up his own private investigator business and apparently doing well enough for himself to afford some nice technology.
That made it a rather bitter pill to swallow when it was revealed that Gibbs had been avoiding Fornell ever since the trial, out of guilt in knowing that his friend had been right about Hicks all along.
The sudden reunion made things very uncomfortable for Gibbs, to be sure. "Entertaining" isn't quite the word I'd use to describe his squirming, but there was...

In this episode of NCIS, titled "Burden of Proof," the team investigates the claim that a convicted murderer was framed. This case puts Senior FBI Agent Fornell (Joe Spano) back in the mix for the first time in season 15.

Joe Spano returns as Senior FBI Agent Fornell in this NCIS episode, but the case may mean bad news for his career. In "Burden of Proof," a convicted felon swears NCIS framed him for murder a decade ago, and Gibbs starts his own investigation, beginning with a new autopsy by Ducky.
