The Lesson by co-directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov was the big winner at this year’s Sofia International Film Festival in Bulgaria.
The duo’s feature debut became the second Bulgarian feature in Siff’s 19-year history to receive the international jury’s Grand Prix after Dragomir Sholev’s Shelter in 2011.
The Lesson also picked up the Audience Award, the Fipresci International Critics’ Prize and the award for the Best Bulgarian Feature Film.
Accepting the award, Valchanov pointed to the importance of the Sofia Meetings where The Lesson had originally been pitched and said that this event should be ¨an example¨ to the Bulgarian state to develop a long-term and sustainable film policy for the future.
The sentiment was echoed by international jury president Stephan Komanderev (The Judgement) when he presented the ¨Sofia City Of Film¨ Grand Prix to the young directors.

Liverpool’s conquerers Fc Basel will be looking to continue their Champions League fantasy when they host Fc Porto in the last 16 tonight.
The Swiss club weren’t fancied to do much in the group stages as they were highly tipped to finish third in a group that included The Reds, Real Madrid and Bulgaria’s Ludogorets.
However, they managed to secure a point in the final group game at Anfield to steal second place and qualification from Brendan Rodgers’ side.
They are up against it however as they face a Porto side that went through the group stages unbeaten. The Portuguese side won four and drew two in a group that included Shakhtar Donetsk, Atletico Bilbao and Bate Borisov.
Porto are also the second top scorers in this season’s competition. Only Chelsea’s 17 goals betters their tally of 16.

Only England can make a 3-0 victory look thoroughly unremarkable as they ran out comfortable but unexceptional victors against a toothless Bulgarian side who created very few chances. Three goals in the first half: a first international goal for Gary Cahill and a brace from Wayne Rooney ensured the three points for Capello’s side, who put in a professional performance if not a sensational one to end Lothar Matthäus’ unbeaten run and put themselves three points clear at the top of their qualifying group G.
England travelled to the Stadion Vasil Levski in Sofia to take on Bulgaria, a side they have never lost to, on the back of a terrific away record for Fabio Capello, who had won 9 of his last 13 away fixtures. In addition to this, last time the two teams met England ran out 4-0 victors courtesy of a Jermaine Defoe hat trick. Lothar Matthäus has...
