Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

At long last, Kathryn Bigelow is returning to filmmaking. After 2017’s Detroit, she was developing the David Koepp-scripted thriller Aurora for Netflix but has now moved on to another project for the company. The untitled thriller will unfold in real-time at the White House as a missile attack threatens the United States. THR reports former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who also wrote Jackie, scripted the project based on Bigelow’s idea. No additional details were revealed but with Netflix now greenlighting the project, here’s hoping it kicks off before the end of the year.

Diane Kruger is re-teaming with her In the Fade director Fatih Akin on the new German period drama Amrum, which began principal photography in Hamburg today.
The film follows a family living in a small village on Amrum Island in rural northern Germany in early 1945, in the final days of World War II. The story is based on the childhood memories of Akin’s In the Fade co-screenwriter, German author and director Hark Bohm. Bohm had initially planned to direct the film himself before handing the reins over to Akin, who co-wrote the Amrum screenplay.
The movie is a coming-of-age story of Nanning, a 12-year-old boy (played by Jasper Billerbeck) and his best friend Hermann (Kian Köppke). Laura Tonke (When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before) plays Nanning’s mother, Hille Hagener. Kruger plays Tessa Bendixen, a farmer’s wife. It revolves around a 12-year-old boy called Nanning who goes seal hunting, fishing at night and toils in the fields to help his mother feed the family. When peace is declared, completely new conflicts arise, and Nanning must learn to find his own way.
The screenplay is based on the childhood memories of German director and screenwriter Hark Bohm, a long-standing friend of Akin.
The pair previously collaborated on the screenplay of Turkish-German director Akin’s award-winning 2017 feature In The Fade.

Matthias Schweighöfer is one of the most popular and successful German actors in Hollywood today. Although cast in a minor role as Lieutenant Franz Herber in the Tom Cruise-led cast film Valkyrie (2008), the film’s success helped Schweighöfer breakthrough into Hollywood. However, Schweighöfer’s acting career began over a decade earlier, in 1994. As a son of veteran German actress Gitta Schweighöfer and actor Michael Schweighöfer, Matthias Schweighöfer has had a fascinating interest in acting and filmmaking from a young age. With an unmissable on-screen presence, Matthias Schweighöfer is often recognized for his uncanny resemblance to HBO’s Game of Thrones cast...

In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Plot: Jess and Bill Walker are doing their best to keep their family connected as their children grow older, more independent, and more distant. When a chance encounter with an astrological reader causes the family to wake up to a full body switch, on the morning of the most important day of each of their lives, can the Walkers unite to land a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout?
Review: In the sub-genre of body swap movies, very few films stand out as quality films. The concept itself is ridiculous and silly and tends to aim more toward family-friendly fare like Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30. Still, even those movies benefitted from some personality and edge that helped them earn some originality, a quality sorely lacking in Netflix’s new Christmas-themed comedy Family Switch. Everything you need to know about this movie is showcased in the trailer,...

At this point, the body switch comedy genre is pretty well worn. Big, Freaky Friday (twice), 17 Again, 13 Going on 30, etc., have pretty much defined and exhausted what can be done with the concept to keep it fresh. The latter 2004 hit actually starred Jennifer Garner, who is now returning to the genre again, this time as producer and star of Netflix’s holiday comedy Family Switch.
This time around, the formula is expanded to have an entire family experience a life-altering cosmic moment and become their opposites. The parents become their kids, the kids become their parents, even the baby becomes the French Bulldog. Guess what? It works, even offering some Lol moments along the way in a movie that isn’t trying to reinvent anything here, just finding a new angle to squeeze some more life out of it.

Zack Snyder's sci-fi film "Rebel Moon: Part One -- A Child of Fire" -- to cite its full title -- is due for release on December 15, 2023, and, like all of Snyder's films, promises to be visually complex and cinematically overblown. Snyder loves a certain kind of hazy photography as well as bold, brassy characters, usually living within an action-packed milieu that allows them to deliver profound-sounding platitudes in bedroom-voiced monologues while slashing people open in slow-motion. "Rebel Moon" will be a sci-fi riff on the "Seven Samurai" story, with a distant-future agrarian moon standing in for a beleaguered 16th-century Japanese village, and an encroaching Empire-like army standing in for Kurosawa's itinerant bandits. Sofia Boutella will play a character who travels the galaxy to gather up a ragtag group of failed warriors to protect her moon from almost-assured destruction.

If you’re going to make a music biopic — and with new dramatic takes on the lives of Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson on the way, it appears everyone is — you’d better secure the music rights. Making a movie purporting to tell the story of a pop music legend without first clearing rights to use the pop music that made them legendary is a recipe for box office disaster.
Remember Stardust, Gabriel Range’s 2020 David Bowie biopic starring Johnny Flynn, shot without any music from Bowie? Or Jimi: All Is By My Side (2013) directed by John Ridley with André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix playing none of his original songs? How about England Is Mine, Mark Gill’s unauthorized Morrissey biopic with Jack Lowden and Jodie Comer? Probably not. Without the sing-alone tunes, those films sank without a trace.

Family Switch‘s age/identity swapping premise has been done many times before. In fact, Jennifer Garner even references her prior age-swapping comedy 13 Going on 30 in Family Switch‘s trailer. But Netflix is hoping audiences are ready for a new 2023 version of the tried-and-true premise with Garner and Ed Helms in starring roles.
The cast includes Emma Myers, Brady Noon, Bashir Salahuddin, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Xosha Roquemore. Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Paul Scheer, Fortune Feimster, and Rita Moreno also star.
McG directs from a screenplay by Victoria Strouse and Adam Sztykiel, based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s Bedtime For Mommy novel. McG, Jennifer Lawrence, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, Nicole King Solaka, and Mary Viola serve as producers, with David Hyman, Jason Rosenthal, and Victoria Strause executive producing.
Family Switch premieres on November 30, 2023 on Netflix.

When a chance encounter with an astrological reader causes the Walkers to wake up to a full body switch, can they unite to land a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout? Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon star in this family comedy based on the book called "Bedtime For Mommy" by Amy Krouse-Rosenthal. The comedy also features Bashir Salahuddin, Matthias Schweighöfer,...

Jennifer Garner delighted audiences with her contribution to the body-swapping movie world, 13 Going On 30, which was her own version of Big. The former Alias actress will be making a grand return to this particular sub-genre with the upcoming Netflix comedy Family Swap. Heart of Stone presents a whirlwind of action and suspense but the film stumbles when it comes to its handling of gender roles, resulting in a script that leans heavily on clichés. Heart of Stone is the latest in a long line of exclusive Netflix releases which sees the streaming giant reunite with writer Greg Rucka who penned the well-regarded hit The Old Guard as well as Gal Gadot and Matthias Schweighofer both of whom had solid success with Netflix projects ranging from Red Notice to Army of Thieves. This movie seemingly has all the elements in place for a strong foundation for high-concept spy action fun, but in execution, Heart of Stone also has the life and energy of a stone.

It’s turning out to be quite a summer for superspies and supercomputers.
A month after the action feast of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part I”, in which Tom Cruise faced off with an AI supervillain called “the Entity,” comes a very “Mi”-like international espionage thriller with an equally fancy and powerful machine.
“Heart of Stone” stars Gal Gadot as Rachel Stone, an agent for an elite and clandestine intelligence agency called the Charter. Like “Mission: Impossible”, “Heart of Stone” hits glamorous global destinations and features lengthy actions sequence including a wingsuit skydive.

"All of the action, stunts, everything you see was done with real people." Real stunts are cool! Though is the movie any good? Netflix has unveiled a final behind-the-scenes featurette for their action spy thriller titled Heart of Stone, streaming soon if anyone wants to watch. This has been getting awful reviews, and I'm not surprised. Just because they spent a lot of moeny making this doesn't mean it will be any good. Gal Gadot stars as the lead character Rachel Stone, an elite CIA agent who must make sure they don't lose their most valuable asset - a special tech device that allows them to help orchestra the world. The twist is that she also works for a secret "peacekeeping" organization called Charter, and they are free from the government or other ties. So a bit of James Bond, a bit of Mission Impossible, in a globe-trotting adventure with Gadot as our world-saving 007.

Review: We have entered the strange period of the SAG-AFTRA strike, where big movies are being released with minimal marketing from the film stars. At any other time, Heart of Stone would get a substantial push on every platform you can imagine. Instead, there are a few interviews filmed several weeks in advance that try to promote the new film. With Wonder Woman herself in the lead, Heart of Stone is designed to be Netflix‘s equivalent of Mission: Impossible, even boasting their shared producers in the trailers. While the film shares more in common with the James Bond franchise, some spectacular chase sequences echo the most recent entries in Tom Cruise’s hit franchise. Netflix is home to a great range of espionage thrillers and action films, featuring renowned stars and gripping storylines full of heart-pounding moments and unexpected twists. If Heart of Stone has any distinctive visual moments, they all involve a supercomputer called the Heart. The Heart appears in the form of holographic images surrounding operator the Jack of Hearts (Matthias Schweighöfer), who moves around digital objects and zooms in on key details by waving his hands and touching objects. Yes, we’ve seen many similar depictions of supercomputers ever since Tom Cruise stared intensely at future crimes in 2002’s Minority Report and Tony Stark threw hot rod red on his suit in 2008’s Iron Man. Heck, we’ve seen Jeff Goldblum wave his shockingly large hands around cg-landscapes in apartment commercials.
To his credit though, director Tom Harper doesn’t treat the visuals as anything groundbreaking or particularly exciting. It’s just shorthand for superspy technology. In fact, everything in Heart of Stone is superspy shorthand—a recitation of ideas and characters that we’ve seen time and again.

The Tom Cruise-starring seventh entry in the "M:i" franchise is as propulsive and thrilling as any other of the series' installments, full of globe-trotting action, jaw-dropping stunts, unexpected twists, and a disturbingly relevant villain in the form of artificial intelligence. If there’s one thing to know about MI6 agent Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot), it’s that she’s meant to stay in the van. In Tom Harper’s new action thriller “Heart of Stone,” there are spies in the field and spies who drive, but some spies are just supposed to sit behind a computer screen reading fast-scrolling lines of code and hacking into mainframes. It’s possible this seems a little implausible, knowing what we know about star Gal Gadot’s star persona, and that’s because it is: Rachel Stone of MI6 is not who she says she is.

Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Tom Harper’s Heart of Stone is a paint-by-numbers global espionage thriller that isn’t done any favors by releasing so soon after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The film is similar in scope and tone to the most recent Ethan Hunt spy caper but vastly inferior by almost every other measure, especially when it comes to action and characterization.

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
