Early in the new season of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," a prisoner gets fed up with her counselor making assumptions about her. "You don't know my story!" she bellows at him. We know it, though, thanks to this remarkable and generous show. "Orange," whose third season premieres Friday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, has been all about taking its characters — who are marginalized as inmates at a federal women's prison, and are part of a medium that's often marginalized or simplified its depictions of women and/or minorities — figuring out what their stories are, and telling them in as vibrant and human a fashion as possible. Two years ago, the series started out by showing us the world of the Litchfield prison through the eyes of spoiled urbanite Piper (Taylor Schilling). This was on the one hand a safe move by Jenji Kohan, since Piper's background made her...

“I speak heavily in analogies,” Sloane Crosley said Saturday at BookCon, where A.M. Homes interviewed her in front of seventy or so fans at the Javits Center. The celebrated essayist (and, full disclosure, a friend) was here to talk up her first novel, The Clasp, a major Farrar Straus and Giroux title out this coming fall, about three estranged college friends who embark on a French road trip in search of a lost piece of jewelry. It's an homage to Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” and the event began with a slightly campy reading of that famous short story by Barbara Rosenblat, introduced as “the Meryl Streep of audio books,” but possibly more familiar as cancer-stricken Rosa from Orange is the New Black. Following that, the two writers fell into some banter about the writing process, riffing on famous quotes and odd analogies like Abbot and Costello at a...

I was so affected by the "Orange is the New Black" Season 2 episode "A Whole Other Whole" -- and by extension "Little Mustachioed Shit," in which a key plotline from the episode is wrapped up in startling fashion -- that I took the opportunity to ask cast member Yael Stone about it on the red carpet at last year's Emmys (you can watch the brief exchange above). Needless to say, it's Stone's character Lorna Morello who provides the emotional crux of the storyline in question. [Note: There are copious spoilers below, so stop reading if you haven't yet watched "Orange is the New Black" Season 2.] From her very first appearance, I was charmed by Morello's blend of low-key spunk, inner warmth and obvious attachment to glamour, as evidenced by her ever-present bloom of bright-red lipstick. I also had questions about her upcoming nuptials to the oft-mentioned but never-seen Christopher ("Christ-uffah"), whose perennial absence from visiting day read as suspicious, to say the very least.

Gotham Season 1, Episode 19: ‘Beasts of Prey’
Written by Ken Woodruff
Directed by Eagle Egilsson
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
As Gotham heads towards the end of its first season, it winds up some plot threads with an episode that has everyone reaching a turning point. After his big win over Commissioner Loeb in “Everyone has a Cobblepot”, Gordon has let his guard down a bit, and this has allowed Loeb the chance to retaliate against him. The mark that Loeb places on Gordon gets him so riled up that he is even more determined to bring down the dirty Commissioner, but first he has to deal with the serial killer known as “the Ogre”, which is merely set up in this episode as part of the case of the week.

Uzo, Natasha Lyonne, Lorraine Toussaint, Taryn Manning, Lauren Lapkus and Barbara Rosenblat were all in festive spirits as well.Andy Samberg and wife Joanna Newsom also hammed it up at the bash, posing for some adorably awkward photos together with a borrowed statuette ... while the "Boyhood...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

It's probably fair to say that Orange is the New Black's Vee is a goner. Despite reports this morning from TMZ that said Lorraine Toussaint is on the set today filming as villain Vee for Orange is the New Black, EW has confirmed that Toussaint is not set to be a part of season three. Viewers last saw Vee being slammed by a van driven by Miss Rosa (Barbara Rosenblat), Mean Girls-style, after escaping from the Litchfield Correctional Facility through the underground drain system. Toussaint previously confirmed Vee's death, but suggested that the door to that character was not entirely closed.

There's a lot going on in Season 2 of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, and very little of it has to do with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), who is ostensibly the show's protagonist. Creator Jenji Kohan made no secret of the fact that plot lines were going to be more equally distributed in the sophomore season, pulling the focus away from Piper and allowing other characters like Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Miss Rosa (Barbara Rosenblat) and newcomer Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) to move into the spotlight. But Schilling says she frankly didn't even notice the difference.
"I felt like it was hard to even know that there was less of it, because what was happening felt so dynamic, and it felt like the character of Piper was moving in such an interesting way," the Emmy-nominated Schilling tells TVGuide.com. "That's what I was focused on."

Over the course of the show's two seasons, the no-nonsense bank robber evolved from being a bit player to becoming one of season two's most fascinating breakout roles. Though reasonably quiet throughout the first season, Miss Rosa Cisneros (Barbara Rosenblat) steals the show in season 2’s “Appropriately Sized Pots.” Through flashbacks in the season’s eighth episode, we learn about Rosa’s life as a bank robber, which ultimately landed her in Litchfield Penitentiary. We’re introduced to a young Rosa, played wonderfully by Stephanie Andujar, who’s in love with the thrill of robbing banks and the smell of money. Back then, Rosa was a member of a four-man robbing crew after being introduced to robbery by her boyfriend Marco (Alfredo De Quesada) who tells her they must kiss before and after a robbery. She believes she’s cursed because all of the men she kisses post-robbery die. The only member of the group to survive is Tony, who she doesn’t kiss after a robbery because she finally gets arrested.

Continuing our periodic look at "Orange Is the New Black" season 2, I have thoughts on episodes 7 & 8 coming up just as soon as I'm in an M. Night Shalamalama movie... When "Orange" was so Piper-centric in its early days, the episode structure felt very much like "Lost," with a Piper flashback in some way shedding light on the Piper-dominated action at Litchfield. Now that the show has become much more of an ensemble piece, that isn't quite the case. The characters featured in the flashbacks are still prominent in present-day, but so much is happening at Litchfield right now that no one story ever takes over an episode, unless we get something like Piper's trip to Chicago in the season premiere. With so many prominent characters having gotten the flashback treatment by this point in season 2, "Orange" is starting to reach deep onto the bench for new stories. Here, we get Cindy,...

This looks like So Much Fun.The stars of "Orange Is the New Black" went all out for New York Pride this year, partying it up on a float for the show while showing their support for the Lgbt community.Danielle Brooks (Taystee), Dascha Polanco (Daya), Samira Wiley (Poussey), Yael Stone (Morello), Barbara Rosenblat (Rosa) and Matt McGorry (John Bennett) all rode on the float, where they were seen grinding on each other, showing some skin and just having a blast in the streets of NYC.It was a big year for "Oitnb" at the event, with transgender actress Laverne Cox (Sophia) serving as this year's grand marshal.Clad in a pink bandage dress, Cox rode in a convertible with Delores Nettles, the mother of murdered trans woman Islan Nettles. On the other side of the country, two more stars from the popular Netflix prison dramedy attended Pride events in San Francisco.

Filled with action and tension, the season finale “We Have Manners. We’re Polite,” leaves us in anticipation for the next season to arrive. Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) plots to get out of trouble by getting Black Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) and Janae (Vicky Jeudy) to tell the men investigating Red’s (Kate Mulgrew) attack that they believe Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) committed the crime. Blindly, and stupidly, following Vee, the two follow their orders and Crazy Eyes becomes the number one suspect in the case, even though many inmates said they believed Vee attacked Red. To get herself out of trouble, Vee tells Crazy Eyes that she was the one who attacked Red and Crazy Eyes begins to believe that she was the one who did it. When questioned, Crazy Eyes tells the police she is confused and doesn’t remember it but that she attacked Red. The investigators, who...

Episode 8 begins with Healy (Michael Harney) telling Miss Rosa (Barbara Rosenblat) that the Doc will not cover the surgery she needs; she is forced to continue chemotherapy treatment instead, convincing her she will die soon. This episode concentrates on the bank-robbing, money-loving Rosa. The first flashback is Rosa’s first bank robbery and she is nervous as her boyfriend, Marco (Alfredo De Quesada), hands her a gun that she later finds out is not loaded. The two kiss and Marco tells her they must always kiss before and after a robbery. After they rob the bank with two other guys and hop into the getaway car, the group sees that Marco has been shot and he dies in Rosa’s arms shortly after. Rosa’s love of money increases after every robbery. After robbing another bank, Rosa kisses one of the other men, who has a heart attack and dies shortly after their post-robbery kiss.

It was all things "Orange Is the New Black" at The Dolby Theatre on Friday (March 14) as night two of Paleyfest 2014 feted the hit Netflix series. With a staggering 12 cast members on stage, as well as creator Jenji Kohan, the event revealed a cast that couldn't be having more fun with one another and an audience that couldn't be having more fun watching.
With that many people on stage, it proved hard at times for some to get a word in (poor Michael Harney, who plays the beleaguered Healy, barely spoke once), but the panel was full of hilarity and moments of enlightenment on Season 1, as well as a few teases about the highly-anticipated upcoming second season.
Fan reaction went from 0 to 60 overnight
When asked what life was like once Season 1 was released in 2013, the cast was unanimous on the fact that recognition on the street happened almost immediately. "They've assaulted us!

"Lotte Flack makes her American debut"
Exclusive Interview by Michael Aaron Gallagher
Actress Lotte Flack arrives on the red carpet.Syracuse, NY - As she stepped out of the limousine and onto the red carpet at the Palace Theater, her delightful smile and carefree twirl, showing off her stylish heals, were sure signs that German actress Lotte Flack (who is from Hamburg) was glad to be in America. It may not have been the warm, tropical beauty of the Florida coast, but for her coming to United States was something she had always wanted to do.
On April 2, her film “Pope Joan,” which was directed by Sonke Wortmann and also stars Johanna Wokalek, John Goodman ("Roseanne"), David Wenham (“Lord of the Rings”), and Iain Glen (“Resident Evil”) premiered in front of a sell-out crowd. The author, Donna Woolfolk Cross, a Central New York native was also in attendance, as well as Barbara Rosenblat,...
