It was five decades ago long distance swimmer Diana Nyad became part of the cultural landscape with her feats including a recording-setting circling of Manhattan and a 102-mile swim from the Bahamas to Florida she accomplished that in 27 hours. In 1978, Nyad made her first attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida but ended the quest after 40 hours. After segueing to a successful career as a sports journalist on ABC’s “Wild World of Sports” for over two decades, she decided at 60 to try again. She made three attempts felled by asthma, muscle fatigue, jellyfish and a tropical storm.
Nyad’s attempts at the swim were the subject of the 2013 documentary “The Other Shore.” When I talked to her for the L.A. Times a decade ago the then 64-year-old was preparing for her final attempt. “When I first started this in my 20s and when I started again when I turned...

The resistance is coming together, if ever so slowly.
The question that never honestly got answered in Invasion Season 2 Episode 7 is: who is the enemy, the military or the aliens?
The smart money would still have to go on the transformed aliens, now flat-out killing machines.
But, after an initial round of unity after the aliens invaded, humanity has splintered again. But instead of having hundreds of nation-states, it's broken down into the military and civilians.
Unfortunately, while the civilians are developing good ideas about conquering the aliens, the military has the guns and a rigid mindset regarding civilians.
You would think that Trevante Cole, of all people, would understand that, being former military and all.
But Trevante is a civilian on a mission now. Fate has thrown him together with Rose, who may be even more obsessed with the aliens than him, if that's possible.

The former Venice home of South Park co-creator Matt Stone is hitting the market for $6.5 million.
Located in a residential neighborhood of Venice known as the Silver Triangle, the contemporary-modern house sits on a nearly 7,500-square-foot corner double lot, with just over 3,000 square feet of interior space.
“It’s in this very coveted area of Venice that’s very quiet and serene. There’s not much traffic whether car or foot,” says The Agency’s Billy Rose, who holds the listing. He adds, “What makes this property unique is that it’s like the tip of a peninsula, surrounded essentially by three streets. There’s just one neighbor to the rear; it only shares one property line. So it gets tremendous light and it’s extremely private.”
The current owner remodeled the interior of the house after buying it from Stone, giving it more of a Danish Modern-inspired contemporary feel.

James Caan, the self-assured star who played Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and a rough-and-tumble athlete in Rollerball but had the self-assurance to showcase a sensitive side during his long career, has died. He was 82.
Caan died Wednesday night in Los Angeles, his rep Arnold Robinson told The Hollywood Reporter, confirming a post on the actor’s Twitter account. Neither he nor the family would reveal a cause of death.
Caan will best be remembered for his explosive performance as Sonny in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972). Mesmerizing as the volatile and confrontational eldest son and heir apparent to his family’s criminal empire, he earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.
Caan almost didn’t get to play the part that would become his signature role. Paramount originally cast him as younger brother Michael and Carmine Caridi as Sonny. But Coppola,...

‘Love, Death & Robots’ Animator Robert Valley to Direct Feature Biopic on Broadway Legend Billy Rose
Seasoned film and television animator Robert Valley is tackling a new project about the life of Billy Rose — a songwriter, Broadway producer and unwitting activist.
“American Rose” will tell the roving true story of Rose, once married to comedian and multi-hyphenate Fanny Brice and producer of “Carmen Jones,” the first musical on Broadway to feature a cast of all-Black performers.
“Valley, who directed ‘Pear Cider & Cigarettes’ and, most recently, two episodes of ‘Love Death & Robots,’ is bringing his immense talent and unique artistic vision to this bespoke project and our team is thrilled beyond belief to work with him,” said producer Steven Finkelstein of American Rose Productions, who has spent four years putting the production together.
The child of Jewish immigrants from modest means in the Lower East Side tenements of New York, Rose became a shorthand writing champion, a songwriter, and a producer of Broadway shows and massive outdoor spectacles,...

Liza Minnelli fans were concerned about her health based on her appearance at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, when she presented the best picture Oscar to “Coda.” But today, her longtime friend Michael Feinstein posted an Instagram video that he shot in the car with Minnelli right before the Oscars ceremony, his representative comfirmed. Minnelli appears energetic, lively, and clearly excited to be on her way to the event, breaking into song with the Great American Songbook rarity “(It’s Gonna Be) A Great Day” by Vincent Youmans, Edward Eliscu, and Billy Rose.
Since Feinstein posted his video to Instagram, it’s been reposted on Twitter, going a bit viral among her fans who are heartened to see the artist boisterous and full of life. One Twitter commentator wrote, “The cigarette, the sleeves, the broken broadway voice. This is a visual handbook on camp.”

In 1971, Linda Gray, then a successful TV commercial actress (she eventually appeared in more than 400 TV ads), and her husband Ed Thrasher, then the art director for Warner Bros. Records, who designed album covers for seminal bands of the era — including The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Grateful Dead and The Doobie Brothers — drove out of L.A. with some visiting friends from Tennessee who were looking to buy a horse ranch.
The foursome ended up about 35 miles due north of Beverly Hills, in the secluded Canyon Country area of the Santa Clarita Valley, where Gray and Thrasher quickly became so smitten with the area’s rolling, oak- forested hills that they acquired an unusually triangular parcel of nearly 2.7 mostly flat acres for themselves.

Swimmer who found movie fame in a string of MGM musicals
Esther Williams, "Hollywood's Mermaid", who has died aged 91, swam her way through more than a dozen splashy MGM musicals in the 1940s and early 50s. While smiling at the camera, she was able to do a combination of crawl, breast and backstroke, and was forever blowing bubbles under water, seemingly having an inexhaustible supply of air.
Like the starlets Lana Turner, Kathryn Grayson and Donna Reed before her, she started out for MGM in a Hardy Family picture, Andy Hardy's Double Life (1942) – though one that allowed her to swim with Mickey Rooney. After being billed 19th in A Guy Named Joe (1943), she shot to stardom in her third film, Bathing Beauty (1944).
It started out as an average Red Skelton vehicle, first called Mr Co-Ed, then Sing and Swim, but Esther's superb figure and pretty features were heightened by Technicolor...

Esther Williams was in a class by herself. The Olympic hopeful turned leading lady, who utilized her aquatic skills in Technicolor romances such as Bathing Beauty and Neptune's Daughter, died early this morning in her sleep. She was 91. A champion swimmer as a teen growing up in Los Angeles, Williams was headed for the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo when the outbreak of World War II prompted the Games' cancellation. But it turned out the brunette beauty was destined for stardom in other arenas. She was discovered swimming alongside Tarzan star Johnny Weismuller as part of Billy Rose's Aquacade show in San Francisco and her career took off in the 1940s when she starred in a...

Los Angeles — Esther Williams, the swimming champion turned actress who starred in glittering and aquatic Technicolor musicals of the 1940s and 1950s, has died. She was 91.
Williams died early Thursday in her sleep, according to her longtime publicist Harlan Boll.
Following in the footsteps of Sonja Henie, who went from skating champion to movie star, Williams became one of Hollywood's biggest moneymakers, appearing in spectacular swimsuit numbers that capitalized on her wholesome beauty and perfect figure.
Such films as "Easy to Wed," `'Neptune's Daughter" and "Dangerous When Wet" followed the same formula: romance, music, a bit of comedy and a flimsy plot that provided excuses to get Esther into the water.
The extravaganzas dazzled a second generation via television and the compilation films "That's Entertainment." Williams' co-stars included the pick of the MGM contract list, including Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, Ricardo Montalban and Howard Keel.

It’s not every Hollywood icon that can claim to have made it big by parlaying a career as a professional swimmer into acting jobs, But Esther Williams, who died today at the age of 91, most certainly can.A native of Inglewood, California, she was a water baby from an early age, taking jobs at local pools and at Manhattan Beach. She also got swimming lessons from male lifeguards who taught her what were then considered ‘male only’ strokes such as the butterfly, with which she went on to win medals and break records. Her early career aspirations included becoming a P.E. teacher, although she also worked as a stock girl at a department store before starting to model for the business. While working there, she was contacted by impresario Billy Rose to join his Aquacade show, which saw her paired with future Tarzan star Johnny Weissmuller. After a...

Jason Bateman and his wife, Amanda Anka, are the lucky new owners of the late Ernest Borgnine's Beverly Hills estate, which they recently picked up for $3 million (almost $400,000 less than the asking price). Ernest had owned the home for six decades until his death in 2012. The English-country style compound was originally designed by famous architect L.G. Scherer in 1938 and—even with all the upgrades—has still managed to maintain all of its original character. Listing agent Billy Rose described the Oscar-winning actor's former estate: "It has got a great feeling to the rooms," he told The Hollywood Reporter. The remainder of the 7-acre property includes three guest cottages, a carriage house, a barn and stables.“It reminds me of growing up in Tennessee, where we spent all day outside,” the Southern belle told Elle Decor. “I wanted my children to have that experience, to get muddy and hang out with the animals.”Not only was the ranch a family retreat -- it also served as the location for her wedding to husband Jim Toth, with whom she is expecting her third child. Reese Witherspoon is saying bye-bye to her home-away-from-home in Ojai, Calif.
The 36-year-old actress placed her massive ranch compound on the market Monday for a whopping $10 million -- almost double the price she reportedly paid for it back in 2008.
Known as the Libbey Ranch, the property was built in 1923 as a horse stable for Ojai's founding father Edward Libbey. Renowned Southern California architect Wallace Neff designed a barn on the property that is now a four-bedroom home, and former owner Kathryn Ireland, interior decorator to the stars, completely overhauled and restored the property before Witherspoon bought it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a spread for home design magazine Elle Decor, Witherspoon gushed about the home's "restorative" properties. "The air is fresh, the phone isn't ringing, you can't access e-mail. Time slows down. Within an hour I'm lying on that couch taking a big fat nap," she says in Elle Decor.

The longtime home of actor-director-screenwriter Albert Brooks has come on the market at $6.995 million. The 5,500-square-foot house, which once belonged to Merv Griffin, isn't listed in the Mls and hasn't been for sale for almost 20 years.
Brooks portrayed the brutal gangster Bernie Rose in Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive," a departure from his usual comedic persona. He was also the voice of Marlin in "Finding Nemo," and wrote, directed and starred in "Defending Your Life." Comic auteur Brooks has crafted some of Hollywood's biggest cult comedies, including "The Muse" and "Lost in America."

Irish American acting legend Brian Dennehy, 72, will be awarded the Eugene O'Neill Lifetime Achievement Award for 2010 by the Irish American Writers and Artists group at a ceremony in Rosie O'Grady's in Times Square on October 18, just two blocks from where O'Neill was born. Dennehy, who has been nominated six times for Emmys, won a Golden Globe in 2000 for his performance in "Death of a Salesman," and earned a Tony Award in 2003 for his performance in Eugene O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey into Night." "Getting this award is nice," Dennehy told the press this week. "But double-edged. Nice to be recognized for your work, but they always give you these things when you're too old to do any more damage." Dennehy attended Columbia University, where he discovered his love for the theater, but he soon returned to Brooklyn to drive a meat truck out of the Fort Greene Meat Market. The...

American-born singer and actor who spent the war years in Britain

David Bell explores the life of the star, born Fania Borach, in Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl, which has its world premiere production Nov. 10-24 at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Marya Grandy stars as Brice.
For more than 40 years, the comic actress and singer triumphed wherever she appeared - from vaudeville to variety, burlesque to Broadway, the Ziegfeld Follies to film, and, finally, television.
But life wasn't always fun for Brice.
And it was that aspect of Brice's life that Bell wanted to explore in Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl.
"I not only wanted to capture the spirit of one of Broadway's most electrifying stars - I wanted to capture some of the spirit of ballyhoo, creativity, genius and flim-flam that made up the Broadway of that era," Bell said.
"Fanny Brice was such an icon," said Andrew Kato, Artistic Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

I saw Zooey Deschanel sing before I saw her act. It was at a pre-Oscars house party in Los Angeles in 2002 or 2003. Deschanel and another actress, Samantha Shelton, had formed a duo called If All The Stars Were Pretty Babies—taken from the title of a 1926 song by Billy Rose and Fred Fisher—and were performing occasional gigs around town. That night, they were the evening’s entertainment. Dressed in vintage Flapper-ware, they sang jazz standards and chestnuts from the 20s, 30s and 40s, and, to use a word from those times, were simply beguiling. Then came Elf, and the realization—a little late on my part, perhaps—that Deschanel could act as well. Her disarming performance as Jovie is one of the main reasons that Elf is a perennial holiday favorite in my household along with the original animated version of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas and...
