Exclusive: HBO is betting on another fresh female comedy voice, giving a pilot order to a half-hour starring, written and executive produced by Rachel Sennott.
In the untitled project, a codependent friend group reunites, navigating how the time apart, ambition and new relationships have changed them.

A 2017 alumna of Tisch School of the Arts, Sennott got off to a hot start, when a student film she starred in, Shiva Baby, got a feature adaptation with her reprising her starring role and executive producing. This story about “Barry” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. All actor interviews in that issue were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
Bill Hader had a physical reaction to the end of his HBO comedy series “Barry.” He was wiped out from directing and starring in the entire eight-episode final season to be sure, but he wasn’t prepared to literally ache once the series was over. “It’s like for nine years I had my fist clenched as tight as it possibly could go, fingernails digging into my palms and drawing blood,” he said in an interview conducted the day before SAG-AFTRA went on strike. “And then the day the finale aired they’re like, ‘Alright, you can open your hand now.’ And it’s just like, Ahhhh!”

The fourth and final season of Barry was unlike its previous three, with the HBO comedy becoming darker and deadlier as hitman Barry Berkman (co-creator Bill Hader) reaches his endgame. Yet the Television Academy’s love for the show didn’t waver; after winning nine Emmys in its first three seasons — including lead actor wins for Bill Hader and a supporting actor trophy for Henry Winkler — Barry returns to competition with 11 nominations, including four for Hader (for acting, directing, writing and producing the series) and individual nods for supporting actors Winkler and Anthony Carrigan.

You’re not alone: “Barry” stunt coordinate Wade Allen also misses the days when the HBO series was about a fucked-up hitman who wanted to be an actor. The darkness of the show’s final season has only grown alongside Bill Hader’s visual style; and Episode 4, “it takes a psycho,” required Allen, production designer Eric Schoonover, special effects supervisor Ryan Riley, and visual effects supervisor Laura Hill, to create the show’s most complex — and easily one of its most horrifying — visual gags to date. Unlike the fate of Sian Heder’s “Mega Girls” franchise, which we have to imagine the studio is locking down tight, a ton of Episode 4 spoilers below.
While Barry (Bill Hader) lurks in the shadows of Sally’s (Sarah Goldberg) apartment after escaping prison, Hank (Anthony Carrigan) disposes of his would-be crime-utopia henchmen in the cold light of day — specifically the cold light of a silo filled with sand.

Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”
In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.
“Barry’s” fourth season picks up with Barry in prison after killing Janice (Paula Newsome), his mentor Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) girlfriend, in Season 1. “I had some sense of where we were headed,” said Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally. “But I was very surprised by all the details on the way there.”

As HBO's acclaimed comedy/drama series "Barry" prepares to wrap up with its fourth and final season (read /Film's review here), co-creator and star Bill Hader is learning how to stretch his directing muscles to reach the finish line. The "Saturday Night Live" alum has already demonstrated his skills behind the camera with his previous directorial efforts on the show, yet season 4 marks the first time in the history of "Barry" that he's helmed every single episode.
Hader has proven himself to be quite the auteur throughout the four-season run of "Barry." The series has developed a distinct style that's on full display in episodes like "ronny/lily," a surreal odyssey that depicts a bad day on the hitman job for Barry, and "710N," which features an exhilaratingly unique motorcycle chase sequence. Hader is primarily known for his comedic performances, but the actor started his career in Hollywood as a...

Bill Hader is laughing.
It’s the final week of principal photography on the final season of “Barry,” the Emmy-winning HBO series he launched in 2018 with co-creator Alec Berg, and even though Hader is coming to the end of a season-long shoot that saw him directing every episode himself, when TheWrap visits the set in November 2022, Hader is calm, cool and downright joyful.
It’s a refreshing contrast to the stories of filmmakers who come to the end of directing an entire season of TV and subsequently swear off ever trying that again. But it’s not an altogether surprising one, considering Hader has wanted to be a director his whole life — a dream that was somewhat put on hold when he landed “Saturday Night Live” at age 27.
“He’s so fluid and chill,” Anthony Carrigan, who plays Noho Hank on the HBO series, told TheWrap of Hader’s directing style.

“It’s been an amazing journey making this show, and it’s bittersweet that the story has come to its natural conclusion,” said three-time Emmy Award-winner Bill Hader.

The 75th annual Directors Guild Awards have been handed out at the Beverly Hilton, and the night’s big award brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat out Steven Spielberg for the top prize.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 74 years. Last year, the guild awarded Jane Campion its top film prize for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her path to winning Best Director at the Oscars.
After two consecutive years awarding female directors its top prize (Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao) and watching them go on to take the corresponding Oscar, the Director’s Guild of America nominated a slate of men this year. Despite strong work from Sarah Polley for Women Talking and Gina Prince-Bythewood for...

HBO is ready for more “Barry.”
The cable network announced today that it has renewed Bill Hader’s pitch-black comedy for another season, with Hader set to direct all eight episodes of Season 4.
“Bill, Alec [Berg], and the entire cast and crew delivered an exquisite third season of ‘Barry,’ it’s a masterful blend of laughs and suspense,” said Amy Gravitt, vice president of HBO Programming. “I’m so happy to announce that we are picking up the fourth season.”
The renewal is hardly surprising, given that creators Bill Hader and Alec Berg have been open about the fact that Seasons 3 and 4 were written simultaneously. But the news that Hader will be flying solo behind the camera should be welcome news to fans of the show. Through the first three seasons, Hader has directed nine episodes, including the show’s pilot and some of its most acclaimed episodes.

When the HBO series “Barry” returns for Season 3, the show will benefit from the response to the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” So revealed co-creator and executive producer Alec Berg during the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday.
“I think the response to that episode was so strong that it did open our minds a little bit to being more ambitious and expanding the scope and kind of pushing the show into new places,” Berg said in reference to the Season 2 episode that Hader co-wrote and directed. The story, which was something of a bottle episode, followed hitman Barry (played by Hader) tussling with a Taekwondo master and his daughter throughout the episode.

While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season 3 finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.

Kirk’s Hamilton Berger, seen in three episodes of Season 1, is a famous nemesis to Perry Mason. Though not yet the district attorney, Berger, a rising lawyer in the Da’s office, finds himself surprisingly entangled in Mason’s big case and an unlikely friend to the man who will become his greatest foe.

This isn’t your grandfather’s Perry Mason. The trailer for HBO’s reboot of the classic courtroom drama looks to draw a lot more on Chinatown than the episodic formula followed by the long running CBS drama starring Raymond Burr.
Debuting June 21 at 9 p.m., the new Perry Mason stars Emmy winner Matthew Rhys in an origin story of the famed criminal defense attorney. Rhys’ character is plying his trade amid the crosscurrents of 1931 Los Angeles. It’s the Great Depression, but the city is also experiencing an oil boom, hosting the Olympic Games and, of course, the center of a growing film industry.
