Hulu has debuted the trailer for the upcoming docu-series ‘Captive Audience.’
This is the story of how a story gets told, and how the media’s magnifying glass impacts the characters caught in the narrative. Siblings Ashley and Steven Stayner Jr. never knew their famous father Steven, the child victim of a shocking California kidnapping, who tragically died in an accident when they were young. In 1972, seven-year-old Steven went to school – and never came home. His mother Kay struggles to keep the media interested in the case and to hold her family together. Then, after seven years, a miracle: Steven returns. The media can’t get enough of the story and frantically descend on the Stayner home – but this isn’t the Hollywood ending it appears to be.
Now fourteen years old, Steven struggles to adapt, and his family grapples with life under the media microscope. Steven’s older brother...

Emily (Meredith Bishop), the female lead of the drama "Klepto", defends her penchant for shoplifting by claiming that she has obsessive-compulsive disorder. The numerous vials of meds in her bathroom and Emily's childhood flashbacks would seem to suggest otherwise. This 82-minute picture from first-time feature director Thomas Trail is at its best in its depiction of personal relationships. There is no distributor as yet, but "Klepto" deserves at least a stolen glance.
Nick (Jsu Garcia) is the male lead, and the separate but convergent story lines of Nick and Emily are nicely constructed. She is a young, street-wise L.A. single, bored by her temp jobs, who spends her free time robbing stores big and small -- alternating grab-and-run tactics with more ingenious heists. He is in department store security, manning surveillance camera monitors while hoping to get the cash to start a private security firm. He has an ex-wife and daughter, though his relations with them are abysmal.
Like Emily, Nick is not one to follow the letter of the law. These are flawed, floundering people who drift through life making their own excitement. Eventually, they hook up and soon work each other like the con artists they are. At the crux of the plot are Nick's drug deal involving a nouveau riche immigrant loan shark named Ivan (Henry Czerny, who all but steals the movie in his few scenes) and Emily's continual search for answers regarding her father. The film has two other key characters: Emily's mother, Teresa (Leigh Taylor-Young), a well-heeled shopaholic who comes to visit from Tucson, and Emily's psychiatrist, Dr. Cohn (Michael Nouri), who appears in several fleeting scenes that seem extraneous.
In a long tracking shot, as Emily reaches an emotional breaking point, she strides from the parking lot into a large department store. The evolving emotions that play out on her face during this extended shot forcefully push the narrative toward its denouement. It is Bishop's finest moment in this, her debut movie. Garcia, a Hollywood veteran ("Slaves of New York", "Traffic") who formerly acted under the moniker Nick Corri, brings conviction to a role that could easily have been overplayed.
"Klepto" was shot in HD digital video, an apt medium for a story whose focus is grainy, retail security video cameras. Tech credits are fine. Peter Rieveschl is the DP, and there are unexpected but well-chosen piano solos performed by Eduardo Delgado. Trail also serves as co-writer (with Ethan Gross), editor and co-executive producer (with Bishop).
