"I've taken so much for granted..." Time never stops ticking, and we can never go back. That's just how it is. The Jump is a new sci-fi short film made by filmmaker Andy Sowerby, following an astronaut on a distant journey. The concept is intriguing, but the filmmaking is minimal - featuring mostly footage from recordings taken on the spaceship. The Jump is about an astronaut who embarks upon a pioneering solo mission into deep space, leaving behind her husband. Starring Roseanna Frascona as Nina, plus Philip Arditti and Raad Rawi. It's a short sci-fi drama about the elasticity of time, love, and loss. The film was produced for the Nasa short film competition CineSpace, where filmmakers are asked to make a short film, of 10 mins or less duration, that contains at least 10% footage from the Nasa Archives, using actual Nasa imagery within the film. It's a pretty good film,...

'Spy' movie poster with Melissa McCarthy. 'Spy' movie review: 'Transgressive' feminist statement There's been a lot of talk around the ol' virtual water cooler about the feminist messaging embedded in Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller's riveting, post-apocalyptic free-for-all features the male title character taking a back seat to a fierce, battle-scarred woman liberating five female sex slaves and delivering them to a group of women suggestively called the Vulvani and said to be living in a restorative oasis called the Green Place of Many Mothers. It's Trojan horse feminism, for sure: many guys would think twice about the movie if they knew what Miller was trying to say with it. And yet for all its ragged, dust-choked, girl-power finery, there is another feminist statement at a theater near you that, in its own way, is just as transgressive. Spy is an action comedy where the hero,...

A transition between regimes is never without its fair share of bumps and bruises, and whereas Tyrant may be sugarcoating some of those realities, they are definitely not shying away from them altogether. Having now constructed a legitimate, albeit predictable, reason for Barry/Bassam (Adam Rayner) to stay in Abbudin – helping his brother deal with this life-changing transition with some semblance of grace – the show moves forward with establishing his new role within the political hierarchy.
Essentially, the writers had to start from scratch, since despite being part of the ruling family, his absence from the country and their happenings over the last twenty years has very obviously branded him as an outsider. As opposed to simply being ‘the president’s brother,’ Jamal (Ashraf Barhom), in a premeditated show of appreciation (and with great enthusiasm), gave Bassam the title of ‘special council to the president.’ Once again Jamal shows that...

Director: Lee Tamahori.
Writers: Michael Thomas and Latif Yahia (book).
Cast: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Mem Ferda and Raad Rawi.
The big question in the minds of many fans of Dominic Cooper’s works is why is his name not on nomination lists of this year's awards show? Most lists are out, a few have come and gone, and the Oscars reflect an attitude of snubbing this mighty fine actor. His work in The Devil's Double is superb. He plays two contrasting types of characters with an easy push of a button. One is a very calm and controlled dilettante and the other a violent brat who can scream the Incredible Hulk down.
And the cinematography used to blend his own body-double into the scenes is impeccably flawless. Even more insightful is the question this film brings up: can anyone turn a blind eye to the misfit behavior committed by another?...

Film: 'The Devil's Double'; Director: Lee Tamahori; Actors: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier and Raad Rawi; Rating: **** - masterful subtexts, stunning performance.
The Us has been preoccupied with Iraq for decades. After 9/11, its politicians cooked up reasons for a real occupation. That preoccupation and occupation continues with 'The Devil's Double', that carries an Oscar-worthy, scintillating performance by Dominic Cooper. His performance would have been enough to watch this film, but its extremely interesting subtexts make this must watch despite.

Director: Lee Tamahori Writers: Michael Thomas (screenplay), Latif Yahia (novel) Starring: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Raad Rawi, Mem Ferda, Dar Salim Lee Tamahori’s new film, The Devil’s Double, based on the 1997 memoir, I Was Saddam's Son, tells the story of the unfortunate Iraqi soldier Latif Yahia who bears so strong a resemblance to Saddam Hussein’s elder son Uday that he is forced by Hussein’s inner circle to serve as a body double for this corrupt, sociopathic live wire who represents all of the excess and paranoia of Hussein’s regime. Unfortunately, what might have been a compelling drama steeped in recent history and politics is instead little more than a second-rate genre film that often looks and feels like a made for TV movie. Dominic Cooper (Captain America, An Education) plays both the reluctant Latif and the leering, violent-tempered Uday Hussein, which seems a sensible enough casting decision.

Chicago – There is evil all over the world, as long as there are human beings whose lust for power overcomes any semblance of morality. Iraq seems to be ground zero for those consequences, broken from within and invaded from the outside. It is the surreal tale of Saddam Hussein’s oldest son Uday that’s outlined in “The Devil’s Double.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Dominic Cooper gives a raging performance as Uday Hussein, as well as portraying Hussein’s body double, Latif. The two characters are distinct and separate, and Cooper’s understanding of both is the highlight of the film. The story is based on the book by Latif Yahia, and showcases Uday as a sensationalistic pleasure seeker, a poisonous monster with a paranoid distrust of virtually everything, infiltrating every perceived enemy or simply using his false friends.

Lee Tamahori's The Devil's Double is one of the most disturbing films. However, Tamahori shows with intelligence the daily horrors of Saddam Hussein's regime.
The film is based on the life of Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper), a military officer. He's forced to become the "fiday", a body double, for Uday Hussein (also played by Cooper), the eldest son of president Saddam Hussein (Phillip Quast). To prevent the assassination of Uday, Latif must learn to walk and talk like Uday. Moreover, he must forget his family. During the invasion of Kuwait in 1991, Latif must pass off as Uday to boost the Iraqi troops' morale.
As time goes by, Latif sees that Uday is a devil. The son of president Hussein has an appetite for sex, easy women, school girls, drugs and violence. Latif finds solace in the arms of Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), Uday's mistress. However, Latif eventually plans to flee Iraq.

Title: The Devil’s Double Directed By: Lee Tamahori Starring: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Philip Quast, Nasser Memarzia, Raad Rawi The Devil’s Double has two things going for it, it’s inherently fascinating to watch one man play two roles in the same movie and it claims to be “the real story of the man who was forced to become the double of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son.” If this is really exactly how things went down for this man, the movie’s a worthwhile watch for that reason alone, to get an inside look. The Devil’s Double
Directed by: Lee Tamahori
Starring: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Raad Rawi
Rating: R
Release Date: August 12, 2011
Trailer Score: 5/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Even after watching this trailer, it’s a little hard to know what to think of The Devil’s Double. On the one hand, I think that it could very well be one of the most promising films of 2011. It’s an interesting concept and it is certainly a story that deserves to be told.
On the other hand, I’m a little nervous about the way that they’re choosing to tell it. First and foremost, Dominic Cooper may have been the most talented man for the job, but I find it a little hard to believe that there were no Middle Eastern men who were cut out for the job. Without getting too political, The Devil’s Double has a very Westernized approach to the material.

- The Scorecard Review
A film loosely based on the real-life events of Latif Yahia, The Devil's Double explores a story of corruption, drugs, scandal, rape, and utter lunacy.
Yahia spent years as the double of Saddam Hussein's sadistic son Uday Hussein - a man described as completely psychotic. The film does an amazing job of capturing this utter chaos with precision and in horrific detail.
Many parts of the film have been dramatized and exaggerated for Hollywood purposes, but the main ideas and many of the actual events are from Yahia's own book The Devil's Double.
The film is grotesque and extremely difficult to watch at times, but brilliantly written and presented on screen. It hard to take your eyes off a single minute of it -- although sometime you'll want to. The things Uday did is truly disturbing.
The Devil's Double relies almost entirely on one actor - Dominic Cooper. This...

A new red band trailer has dropped for the upcoming Jason Momoa action film directed by Marcus Nispel. Unlike the majority of cinephiles, I actually sort of like Nispel. Sure his Friday the 13th remake sucked but I was satisfied with his Texas Chainsaw film and I strangely liked his Viking adventure Pathfinder. In my book, Nispel is very much like Zack Sunder. The two can make a film look good and both can stage some marvellous action sequences, but neither gives a hoot about plot and character. They also both like using fake CGI blood, which just looks awful.
Conan the Barbarian stars Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ron Perlman, Leo Howard, Steve O’Donnell, Raad Rawi Fassir, Nonso Anozie, Bob Sapp and Milton Welsh.

Lionsgate has released a new Red Band trailer for director Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian, which you can watch below, courtesy of IGN.
Story synopsis: A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.
The action adventure stars Jason Momoa as Conan, along with Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ron Perlman, Leo Howard, Steve O’Donnell, Raad Rawi Fassir, Nonso Anozie, Bob Sapp and Milton Welsh.
The film looks plenty entertaining, but there is one glaring aspect that annoys: All the actors sound like 21st century Americans. And it’s not just the accent we’re talking about, but the delivery and timing. When will directors...
