‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. II’: More interesting, more provocative, and more philosophical than its predecessor (photo: Papou, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Kookie Ryan in ‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. II’) (See ‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. I’ Review: Lars von Trier an ‘Actual Genius.) Previously on Nymphomaniac: Vol. I… Adult Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), beaten and unconscious, is found in a snow-covered alley by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), an unassuming fellow with a gentle demeanor who takes her to his apartment. In his austere dwelling she recounts her adventures as a young nymphomaniac in a series of stories, each preceded by director Lars von Trier’s requisite thematic chapter headings and cinematic asides. Young Joe’s (Stacy Martin) exploits, from her debut sexual experience with Jerome (Shia Labeouf), through her adventures on a train, to her very dramatic experience with a married man, his kids, and his wife (played by Uma Thurman in what might be the best 10 minutes of...

Title: Nymphomaniac Volume II Director: Lars Von Trier Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth, Michael Pas. ‘Nymphomaniac Volume II‘ picks up with the story of Joe’s adulthood, where her journey of self-discovery leads to darker complications. Volume I was witty and amusing, using an ironic approach to the sexual topic matter that enthrallingly weaved in philosophical digressions. Volume II is an utter disappointment, since the entire narrative style changes, leaving greater space to a kaleidoscope of extremisms in copulation, so brutal, that it becomes disturbing. In the chapters ‘The Eastern & Western Church (The Silent Duck),’ ‘The Mirror’ and ‘The Gun,’ [ Read More ]

It’s a safe bet that the most explicit movie of the year released in mainstream cinemas will be Lars von Trier’s latest, Nymphomaniac.
The two-part film is set to be released in the UK later this month, before arriving in the coming weeks in the Us. Whilst Magnolia will be staggering its release across the Atlantic, Artificial Eye have opted for releasing the two volumes on the same day.
And to sweeten the deal, they’ve also announced that they will be broadcasting the two volumes back-to-back on our shores for one day only on the day of release, in a special event hosted by the ever-brilliant Edith Bowman, that will include live cast interviews on stage following the films.

Shia Labeouf ‘Nymphomaniac’ sex scene teaser, courtesy of Lars von Trier (photo: Shia Labeouf and Stacy Martin in ‘Nymphomaniac’) A PG-rated (okay, PG13-rated) still — or publicity shot — from Lars von Trier’s (reportedly) sexually explicit Nymphomaniac aka Nymph()maniac, starring Transformers‘ Shia Labeouf and newcomer Stacy Martin, was recently posted on the film’s website and elsewhere online. Note that any body parts that could even remotely be considered risqué were either left on the cropping-room floor (e.g., Shia Labeouf’s crotch — in fact, most of Labeouf’s body) or carefully concealed by clever lighting or equally clever hair placement. Now, don’t go blaming Lars von Trier for all this circumspection; Nymphomaniac‘s U.S. distributor Magnolia Pictures is likely the one that doesn’t want to offend the sensibilities of the Prudish & Proud crowd. Each month, Lars Von Trier will be releasing teasers from Nymphomaniac‘s various chapters.

To a TV executive, I'd imagine the phrase "special guest stars Elizabeth Banks and Edward Norton" would conjure up images of creative brilliance and ratings gold. But in actual practice, the stunt casting of the former as a boozy child hater and especially the latter as dreary Spandau Ballet bassist Izzy Lafontaine, threatened to derail last night's episode of ABC's normally consistent freshman hit. To be honest, Norton can't take all the blame for not scoring a single decent laugh during the Spandau bit. Sure, his British accent was too strained, his "I love the '80s" hair too obvious, but...
