By many measures, Rep. David Cicilline (D-r.I.) is a Very Important Democrat. He’s the Democratic leader of the House’s antitrust subcommittee, one of the chamber’s prestigious perches. In 2021, he and a team of fellow House lawmakers led the first-ever second impeachment of a president. He enjoys regular invitations to share his thoughts on Sunday cable news shows, the coin of a realm that tunes its news cycle to those soundbites.
Which made it all the more surprising when Cicilline announced last month that he’d be leaving Congress,...

In a surprising move, the Federal Trade Commission has brought on Sarah Miller, an antitrust activist with strong ties to left-wing advocacy groups, to serve as a special adviser. Miller is known for her outspoken lobbying efforts to push for federal investigations into Elon Musk’s business practices, specifically regarding antitrust concerns. Miller founded the American […]

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us."
From Linda Ronstadt to Depeche Mode, HBO's "The Last Of Us" knows a thing or two about emotionally devastating its audience with the perfect needle-drop. I have it on good authority (aka personal experience) that anyone who watches this show will never again make it through "Long Long Time" without needing a hefty kleenex box. Avoiding pain was never an option: Joel and Ellie live in a bleak world, where they've lost almost everyone, except for each other. Their journey across the country may have brought them closer together, but at least 50% of that boils down to shared trauma. Along the way, they've encountered so much more grief than they could have imagined. So really, how surprising was it when the sixth episode ended with a somber cover of "Never Let Me Down Again"?

In 2013, people lost their minds over the first 20 minutes of NaughtyDog's post-apocalyptic epic, "The Last Of Us" — and believe it or not, that reaction had nothing to do with a zombie infection turning humanity into ravenous, parasitic puppets. See, by the time folks finally got their hands on the disc, the game had drummed up plenty of hype, including lots of breathless praise from critics. People assumed they had a solid grasp of what they were in for.
Every single poster, trailer, and piece of marketing had made the premise pretty clear: "The Last Of Us" was the story of a hardened apocalypse survivor battling against the odds to protect a young girl from harm. So when the game kicks off with players assuming the role of Sarah, a 12-year-old who witnesses the collapse of society, it's all too easy to assume she's the girl that Joel will spend the game protecting.

This Last of Us review contains spoilers.
The Last of Us Episode 1
The Last of Us holds a special place in gamers’ hearts for many reasons, one of them being the fact that it’s arguably one of the most cinematic games ever made. So when it was announced that the game would be adapted to TV by HBO, several questions naturally arose from the fanbase. Does such a game that’s already so cinematically rich really need to be adapted to screen? Will the new actors live up to the performances of the original cast? Will a new format mean changes to the original story?
Judging from the first episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, fans have nothing to fear — other than the infected fungal monstrosities waiting at every turn in this refreshingly faithful adaptation. As longtime fans might expect, episode 1 covers the game’s infamous prologue,...

On Oct. 31, the Department of Justice antitrust division landed a major victory when a federal judge blocked Penguin Random House’s 2.175 billion bid to buy rival Simon & Schuster from Paramount Global. After legal wrangling in a trial closely monitored by Hollywood, U.S. District Judge Florence Pan found that combining two of the world’s largest book publishers would hurt competition for best-selling books. “The government has presented a compelling case that predicts substantial harm to competition as a result of the proposed merger,” Pan wrote. “The post-merger concentration of the relevant market would be concerningly high: The merged entity would have a 49 market share, more than twice that of its closest competitor.”
The ruling marks a triumph for a rejuvenated DOJ antitrust division after decades of lax enforcement — and a troubling sign for Hollywood moguls contemplating mergers. “Anybody who is looking to...

Calls to break up Live Nation Entertainment are getting louder.
The American Economic Liberties Project, a nonprofit advocating for more aggressive antitrust enforcement, urged the Department of Justice on Wednesday to unwind the merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation for allegedly price gouging customers in addition to strong-arming artists and venues into accepting unfavorable conditions. In a letter to the DOJ obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the group claims that the live-events behemoth continues to violate the conditions of a 2010 settlement greenlighting the deal.
“Ticketmaster’s market power over live events is ripping off sports and music fans and undermining the vibrancy and independence of the music industry,” said Sarah Miller, executive director of the American Economic Liberties Project. “With new leadership at the DOJ committed to enforcing the antitrust laws, our new campaign helps connect the voices of fans, artists and others...
