The pain Keith Edmonds has endured is written on his scarred face, giving him street cred with the abused and neglected kids he’s trying to reach.
“There are people who wear their scars all on the inside and you pass them every day,” Edmonds, 40, of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee says. “I just happen to wear my scars on the inside and the outside.”
On Nov. 18, 1978, while living in Flint, Michigan, his mother’s boyfriend got angry one night when the then-14-month-old toddler wouldn’t stop crying in his crib. He held Edmonds’ face to an electric heater, horrifically scorching...

Studio could be located in Dagenham, according to London Mayor.
The mayor of London Sadiq Khan has appointed a team of consultants to produce a feasibility study for a planned major studio in Dagenham in East London.
Bbp Regeneration, Sqw and Richard Miller from the University of Hertfordshire will work on the study. The eventual plan is to develop a new studio that will enable London to host a greater number of international films and TV shows simultaneously.
The mayor will also work with Creative Skillset and Film London to help develop career routes into the creative industries to bolster the crew pool for both the capital and the UK as a whole.
A Cultural Infrastructure Plan will be launched next year identifying what London needs in terms of skills and assets to sustain its position as a “cultural power house” in the coming years.

Babylon, Season 1: Episode 5 – “Hackney Wick”
Written by Jon Brown
Directed by Sally El Hosaini
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on SundanceTV
Following last week’s superb turn in the wake of Richard Miller’s departure, Babylon returns firing on all cylinders while finding new areas to explore and develop. The most notable of those areas is Liz’s push to convince Sharon she’s a viable candidate for Commissioner. This is Nicola Walker’s breakout episode for the series, as she nails every scene in a varied performance. Attracted by Liz’s mention of one of Sharon’s previous ideas, the shifts in her facial expression from hard and stoic to curious and excited provide a breadth of back story without having to delve into it with a bunch of exposition. While we’ve heard Charles talk about his relationship with Miller and how his past has made him ready for this moment,...

In the last couple years SundanceTV has made a name for itself among the elite spelunkers who can find it on their cable package with its gallery of slow-moving, high-minded crime mysteries such as Top of the Lake and The Red Road. It's like if CBS went to the museum. The boutique network's latest import, Babylon, breaks the mold. It's a brash, wired urban police drama whose pilot was directed by executive producer Danny Boyle, the colorful, kinetic hand behind Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, and most recently Trance, a pixelated thriller that imagines total surveillance. That's the main preoccupation of Babylon,...

Babylon, Season 1: Episode 1 – “Episode One”
Written by Jesse Armstrong
Directed by Jon S. Baird
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on SundanceTV
Coming off a fantastic summer miniseries in The Honourable Woman, SundanceTV has imported a British crime series co-created by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). Unlike most series in the saturated the genre, however, Babylon is not a dark, gritty procedural or whodunnit but a refreshing satirical dramedy from a network that could use a bit of lightening up. After a collection of mostly excellent dramas, the relief in watching Babylon comes just as much from its interesting take on a police story as it does from the shift in tone in SundanceTV’s lineup.
Fans of The Thick of It (and In the Loop) will be pleased to learn that veteran writer Jesse Armstrong brings the same biting comedy from his work with Armando Iannucci to Babylon. The series follows Liz Garvey (Brit Marling,...

The cop drama Babylon is as purely pleasurable as a show can be while still being serious. Though this six-part SundanceTV series is credited to a bomb crew of talents — including writers and producers Robert Jones, Jesse Armstrong, and Sam Bain, and feature filmmaker Danny Boyle — it has a singular vision, albeit one that doesn’t necessarily come into focus in the pilot, which is mainly concerned with introducing the characters and their jobs. American indie-film up-and-comer Brit Marling (the writer and star of Another Earth and Sound of My Voice) plays the show’s lone Yank, Liz Garvey, who’s imported to the United Kingdom to serve as the London Police Department’s director of communications. She’s the audience surrogate, at least for the U.S. market, learning the lay of the land, putting out media fires, and bantering with flinty-eyed Police Commissioner Richard Miller (James Nesbitt), a scowling,...

As the pipe continues to be primed for the 2015 Oscars, one point you'll hear over and over again is how topical the Martin Luther King Jr. biography "Selma" is given the recent racially-charged incidents in Missouri, New York and America on the whole. Indeed the film's peaceful message couldn't be coming at a better time, but, shockingly, there's a fictional tale far more pertinent to the discussion, though ineligible for the Academy Awards. Why? Because "Babylon" is a six-part television series. Co-created by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle, "Babylon" tells the story of a fictional modern day police force that's lost the trust of its citizens. Much like similar departments across the United States, the London unit is facing serious PR problems after numerous reports regarding police misconduct, brutally and racism have brought into question the men behind the badge. Representing them at the top of the pyramid is Police Commissioner Richard Miller (James.

If you haven’t already heard, SundanceTV, which has given us great series, such as Rectify and Top of the Lake, is premiering a new show entitled Babylon tomorrow night at 10 p.m. The series, which comes from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and was one of our most anticipated new shows of 2015, is a satire of the UK police department and stars Brit Marling (Another Earth) as PR expert Liz Garvey, who is brought in to help improve the image of the London police force, led by James Nesbitt’s Commissioner Richard Miller. We’ve already been lucky enough to share with you a great interview with Nesbitt about his role in the series, but now we also have an exclusive clip from the Babylon series premiere. In the clip, Commissioner Miller faces great scrutiny from the committee, as Liz watches, hoping the commissioner will perform better under the pressure.

As it grows as a network, SundanceTV continues to produce new and unique series, such as the critically-acclaimed Rectify and, most recently, the Katie Leung-led limited series One Child. Next up for SundanceTV is Babylon, a satire of the UK police department from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle. The series stars Brit Marling (Another Earth) and James Nesbitt (The Hobbit), and we here at TVOvermind have an exclusive interview with Nesbitt, in which the actor gives more details on exactly what type of show Babylon is. “The writing is so strong,” Nesbitt says about Babylon. “It is very funny, also quite dark. It tackles very contemporary issues.” And what about his character, Commissioner Richard Miller? “He’s the most powerful policeman in the land,” Nesbitt says about him. “He’s a good cop. He wants to repair the relationship between the public and the police.” For more information on the series,...

Babylon, from the writers of Peep Show and The Thick Of It, promises to be one of the year’s most gripping, entertaining shows…
The feature length Babylon pilot episode shown earlier in the year gained a lot of attention, largely thanks to its provenance. The police comedy drama was co-created by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, the scribes behind Peep Show and Fresh Meat, along with one of the most talented directors in the UK, Danny Boyle. Cop dramas are the bread and butter of UK broadcasters and Channel 4 had really pushed the boat out for this one with a top cast including James Nesbitt, Paterson Joseph, Daniel Kaluuya, Adam Deacon and Us star Brit Marling as the Metropolitan police's new Director of Communications.
Despite the talent involved however, the pilot didn’t quite gel. Inconsistent tone, issues of pacing and a lack of focus stopped Babylon from...

If you like your romantic comedies with a good dose of black humor, then you should check out Hit by Lightning. It stars Jon Cryer as Ricky Miller, a 40-year old aspiring writer whose survival job is being a manager at Debbie’s Restaurant. He’s also a bit lonely as he’s never had much luck with women.
That all changes though when he creates an online dating profile and soon meets Danita (Stephanie Szostak), whom he is convinced is the love of his life. Things take a sudden turn, however, when Danita reveals to Ricky that she is actually married to a successful crime novelist and asks Ricky to murder him so that they can be together.
Despite Ricky’s skepticism, he agrees. But it isn’t long before he starts to wonder if Danita is telling the truth, or if there’s something else going on that she’s hiding from him.

While we wait to see what Danny Boyle does with his Steve Jobs movie with Christian Bale, here's the trailer to an amazing looking series that he developed, called Babylon. The police dramedy focuses on the London police department, which must deal with some bad public image concerns. To fix their problems, they bring in an outside PR person. The series stars James Nesbitt and Britt Marling, and here's a brief description of the story:
London’s police force is in need of a public image revamp. And Chief Constable Richard Miller, played by James Nesbitt, has found just the woman to do it…
American visionary from the world of new media Liz Garvey, played by Brit Marling, sets out to revolutionise the force’s PR department just as an outbreak of violence erupts.

In a similar vein to BBC2’s outstanding serial killer drama, The Fall, Babylon enlists the help of an American for this British-based police series. If you’ve not heard of it before today, that might be due to the fact that the pilot landed on British shores back in February of this year. After its initial airing on Channel 4, things fell silent for a time, until the network commissioned a full-length series.
The positive response which surfaced following the first episode was largely down to its starry cast and crew breathing life into its dramedy premise. Brit Marling leads the show as an American PR advisor who’s hired by the London Metropolitan Police Department to overhaul their image. With James Nesbitt and Paterson Joseph taking on supporting turns, it’s shaping up to be a potential must-see for the fall season.

Maybe the most interesting thing about Hit by Lightning is that the only two women with speaking roles have separate, faintly unplaceable European accents. Unfortunately, they never share a scene. Through an Internet dating service, Ricky Miller (Jon Cryer), a middle-aged human cringe who manages a chain restaurant, meets Danita (Stephanie Szostak), the embodiment of a moronic, misogynist stereotype — "You're, like, Maxim-hot and you don't even know it," says Ricky. She can actually cite Steve Buscemi films Reservoir Dogs and Fargo, which is supposedly remarkable, making her the dream girlfriend of frat dudes from 1996 and also probably Kevin Smith and definitely Ricky. For the 90 minutes that Danny Boyle's comedy-drama pilot was on I laughed – and despaired too
• Babylon trailer
• First look: Babylon
As a TV genre, the comedy-drama – com-dram, or dramedy, if you're in too much of a rush for all five syllables – has a lot of ground to cover. It needs to be amusing and it needs to have heart; its intentions collapse if you neither laugh nor feel. On the surface Babylon (Sunday, Channel 4) is a successful example of what a comedy-drama should be. It ticks off its primary requirements with astounding certainty. For 90 minutes, I laughed and I despaired.
The concept is tricky to pin down, because it aims to do so much. It's a cop show, but its cops are also participating in the making of a cop show. It's a political satire, but it is warm towards its main targets while still managing to criticise the system that contains them.

As C4's controversial police drama airs tonight, a former senior officer at the Met talks about his role as adviser
Brian Paddick, once at the heart of the Metropolitan police during some of the most contentious and high-profile operations of recent years, is now helping to steer a radical new TV treatment of the force, directed by the Oscar-winning Danny Boyle.
Paddick, now a peer, is a key adviser on Babylon, which goes out tonight on Channel 4. What happens when the makers of Trainspotting and Four Lions train their sights on the Met for a Channel 4 comedy drama?
Danny Boyle is up a ladder, looking down on the chaos he's created. Dust settles on what's left of a terrace house's bathroom, its plastic peach suite covered in powdered masonry and plaster from the recently demolished toilet wall. A gunman has just burst through it head-first, leaving a beige fog behind him as he runs away. Boyle's hair has little bits of plaster in it as he peers into the monitor, satisfied. "Ok, got it," he says quietly and the crew start clearing up.
We are not in a terrace house but a curtained-off area in the middle of an open-plan 70s office block next to the Tower of London. Boyle, along with Peep Show writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, is tackling the damaged relationship between the police,...

The Danny Boyle-directed pilot for comedy-drama series Babylon centers on a London police force in desperate need of a spruced-up public image. Brit Marling stars as Liz Garvey, a new-media savvy American brought in to revolutionize the force’s PR department; James Nesbitt plays Chief Constable Richard Miller. BAFTA winners Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong wrote the pilot and a further six episodes have been ordered by the UK’s Channel 4 for production this year. Boyle is exec producing with Robert Jones, Armstrong and Bain. The director is keeping busy in TV on both sides of the Atlantic; he’s also teamed with FX and his Slumdog Millionaire collaborator Simon Beaufoy on World War II miniseries Telemark. The Babylon pilot airs on Channel 4 on February 9. There’s no word yet on a U.S. deal, but below is a taste of what the show will look like.

Danny Boyle is keeping busy in TV these days. In the U.S., he’s teamed with FX and his Slumdog Millionaire writer and producer Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson for 10-part WWII miniseries Telemark. Closer to home, he’s readying a pilot for Channel 4‘s straight-to-series police comedy/drama Babylon. BAFTA winners Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong are scripting the pilot which Boyle will direct. Brit Marling (Another Earth, Arbitrage) has now been cast in the lead as Liz Garvey, a new-media savvy American who’s parachuted in to revolutionize the PR department of London’s police force. James Nesbitt (The Hobbit) plays Chief Constable Richard Miller. Also in the ensemble cast are Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), Jill Halfpenny (EastEnders), Adam Deacon (Kidulthood), Daniel Kaluuya, Jonny Sweet, Andrew Brooke and Bertie Carvel. Described as “razor-sharp and visually audacious,” Babylon takes a wry look at the people and politics...

We're just getting started serving up some spooky Halloween jams for October, and next up is Mondo Zombie Boogaloo – a vintage-style collection featuring new spins on old standards and classic horror flicks, plus a few original surprises, all courtesy of three revered old-school rock legends. Assembled by Yep Roc Records, Mondo is a wild and energetic mashup of several musical eras: it taps into the '60s, when “monster kids” hit the beaches by day, watched The Munsters in prime-time and bopped the night away to “The Monster Mash,” then jumps to the late '70s for the kind of horror-infused punk and psychobilly made famous by the Misfits and The Cramps, and for good measure, stops off for a few loving homages to horror movie themes from the '70s and '80s. When it comes to vintage Halloween party rock, there's plenty to love in here, adding up to a rowdy,...

Chicago – The first image that surfaced of Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” was that of a bleached blonde, tattooed Ryan Gosling seated on a motorcycle. For many viewers, that would be enough to earn their ticket, yet Cianfrance’s brooding epic is bound to give them far more than they bargained for. Some may feel betrayed, others will be hooked.
With the exception of “Brother Tied,” a 1998 effort Cianfrance dismisses as an “exercise in egomaniacal hubris,” the director’s first major feature film was 2010’s “Blue Valentine,” a shattering drama that juxtaposed the dawn and dusk of a relationship between two lost souls (played by Gosling and an Oscar-nominated Michelle Williams). “Pines” unspools an even more ambitious narrative structure, exploring the impact of violence on two generations of men in purely linear fashion. Each segment in the film’s three-act structure is self-contained, shifting the audience’s...

I’m not really sure how else to introduce Ryan Gosling besides saying the name Ryan Gosling. Known for his pretty-boy looks, phenomenal acting talents, and all around “Savior of the Universe” personality, Gosling has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now – for good reasons. Whether you’re watching one of his comedic roles like Crazy, Stupid, Love, an independent film like Blue Valentine, or one of his childhood efforts like Remember The Titans, Gosling always commands the screen and always delivers.
Recently, Ryan was able to break away from his hectic life of breaking up fights, saving people from traffic, and giving people movie roles so he could spare a few minutes for a round-table interview session at the press day for his upcoming film The Place Beyond The Pines. Luckily, I was one of the few who were allowed to sit with Ryan and talk...

The SAG Awards sparkled. Women in beautiful dresses, perfectly accessorized; men crisply attired in suits or tuxes; and flash cameras and video everywhere—it was quite a scene. There was drama …
… and romance:
Boldface names made their way down the red carpet: the bolder the name, the faster they moved. Oops, there went Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button). Too late. But Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) did pause for a moment:
He picked up an award later that evening for male actor in a comedy series. Meanwhile, the unofficial award for cutest kids went to the ones playing adman Don Draper’s children in Mad Men. Kiernan Shipka looks sweet …
… but advised me that if she won an award (she did, as part of an ensemble), it would go next to her Tae Kwon Do trophies. Easy there tiger! Meanwhile, her cast-mate and fellow winner Aaron Hart is a handsome little fellow …
